Chapter 18

Our daughter was born in May.

We named her Lucia.

Light.

My mother held her first after Daniel and me.

She cried into the blanket.

“My little light,” she whispered.

Daniel cried too.

He cried so much the nurse brought tissues before he asked.

No one from Linda’s side came.

Robert came later with soup.

Marcus brought flowers and forgot the vase.

Sofia arrived from Miami and announced the baby looked like her.

“She is one hour old,” I said.

“And already wise,” Sofia replied.

The hospital stay was calm.

Every form checked.

Every visitor chosen.

Every door opened by permission.

When the nurse asked if I wanted Lucia taken to the nursery, I said no.

Daniel smiled.

May you like

“She stays with us.”

The words healed a place I did not know still ached.
