Chapter 15

Daniel sold the family house.

Linda screamed through her lawyer.

The house had been in Daniel’s name, but emotionally it had always been hers.

He sold it anyway.

Before closing, he asked if I wanted to walk through it one last time.

I said yes.

The kitchen looked smaller than my memory.

The island where she drank tea.

The table where my passport appeared.

The doorway where the Carter men froze.

I stood there without shaking.

Daniel watched me.

“What are you thinking?”

“That rooms don’t hold power forever.”

He nodded.

“I’m sorry this one held so much.”

I looked at him.

“I’m glad you sold it.”

“So am I.”

He used part of the money to fund Open Door for five years.

Part went to Robert for independent living.

Part went into a trust that required my signature if our marriage survived and dissolved fairly if it did not.

That clause mattered.

Choice in writing.

Trust with doors.

On the last night before the house changed hands, Daniel placed Linda’s old tea set in a box.

“What should I do with this?”

“Donate it.”

He smiled.

“To who?”

“Someone who actually uses tea for comfort.”

May you like

He laughed.

It sounded lighter than before.
