Chapter 10

Linda was found guilty on the assault and document theft charges first.

The forgery case took longer.

But the trust waiver was her undoing.

The notary testified.

The family attorney turned over emails.

Robert admitted Linda had pressured him for years to “keep Daniel’s wife dependent.”

Marcus testified that Linda told him, “A woman with documents is a woman with options.”

That line made the jury visibly react.

Women in the courtroom knew exactly what it meant.

Linda was convicted of forgery, coercion, identity document theft, assault, and attempted fraud.

She received prison time.

Not as much as Sofia wanted.

Enough to matter.

The judge also ordered restitution and a permanent protective order.

When the sentence was read, Linda finally cried.

Not for my mother.

Not for me.

For herself.

Daniel stood beside me.

His hand near mine.

Not touching.

Waiting.

I took it.

He looked at me like I had given him a second life.

I had not.

I had given him a chance to earn one.

After court, reporters shouted questions.

“Are you staying married?”

“Do you forgive your mother-in-law?”

“Was your husband involved?”

I stopped at the courthouse steps.

“My mother-in-law tried to use my passport, my ticket, and my fear to trap me. She failed because the truth had witnesses. Forgiveness is not today’s subject. Safety is.”

Then I walked away.

My apartment overlooked a small park.

Tiny kitchen.

Old floors.

A bedroom just big enough for my bed and desk.

Mine.

Daniel helped carry boxes.

Sofia supervised by phone.

Mom visited for Thanksgiving.

She sat on my sofa and smiled.

“This place breathes.”

I looked around.

May you like

It did.

So did I.
