Chapter 16

I moved back in with Daniel two years after the passport night.

Not to the old house.

Never.

We bought a small brick townhouse with big windows and two locks I chose myself.

My passport stayed in a fireproof box with two keys.

One mine.

One at my lawyer’s office.

Not Daniel’s.

He accepted that without wounded pride.

That was why I came home.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because he stopped demanding symbols of trust and started respecting the shape trust needed.

Mom visited often.

She liked the windows.

Sofia said the guest room was too small and then stayed for ten days.

Marcus became the uncle who brought food and emotional chaos.

Robert learned to cook soup.

Badly at first.

Then beautifully.

The first family dinner in the townhouse was strange.

No Linda at the head of the table.

No one waiting for her opinion.

At one point, Robert asked if he could say grace.

We all nodded.

He bowed his head.

“Thank you for bringing us out of fear,” he whispered.

No one moved.

Then Mom said, “And thank you for Elena’s passport.”

Everyone laughed.

May you like

Even Robert.

Especially me.
