Chapter 5: The Woman Daniel Thought I Would Hate
When I arrived at the apartment, three police cars were already outside.
My heart pounded.
Not from fear.
From anger.
The place looked exactly the same.
The same marble entrance.
The same glass doors.
The same perfect image Daniel cared about more than anything.
But inside those walls, everything had changed.
An officer opened the door.
“Mrs. Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“You own this property?””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“Then you should know your husband has been removed from the premises.””
I stepped inside.
The dining room was still damaged.
The broken plate was gone.
The stain on the tablecloth remained.
A reminder.
Daniel sat on the couch.
He looked furious.
Not sorry.
Furious.
“You did this?””
I stared at him.
“You assaulted me.””
“You called the police.””
“Yes.””
His laugh was bitter.
“You’re really going to destroy your own marriage over one moment?””
“One moment?””
I looked at him.
“You broke my ribs.””
He looked away.
Then Vanessa stood.
I expected arrogance.
I expected guilt.
I expected the woman Daniel had described as a threat.
Instead, she looked terrified.
“Claire.””
I said nothing.
She stepped forward.
“I owe you the truth.””
Daniel immediately stood.
“Vanessa, don’t.””
She flinched.
That reaction told me everything.
I looked at her.
“You were afraid of him.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Careful.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“I wasn’t staying here because of a project.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small recording device.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What are you doing?””
Vanessa pressed a button.
A voice filled the room.
Daniel’s voice.
“I just need Claire to sign the transfer papers. Once the inheritance moves, everything becomes easier.””
My blood went cold.
Another voice.
Vivian.
“She’ll never leave you.””
Daniel laughed.
“She thinks she’s loved.””
The recording ended.
Silence.
Daniel looked at Vanessa like he wanted to destroy her.
“You recorded me?””
Vanessa stepped back.
“I realized what you were doing.””
I stared at her.
“Why help me?””
She swallowed.
“Because I was supposed to be your replacement.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“What?””
She looked ashamed.
“Daniel told me you were unstable. That you were holding him back. He promised me a future.””
My chest tightened.
“But then?””
“Then I saw how he treated you.””
She looked toward the floor.
“And I realized I wasn’t special.””
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood.
Daniel didn’t love people.
He collected them.
He controlled them.
He discarded them.
Officer Harris walked forward.
“Daniel Whitmore, you are under arrest for domestic assault and suspected financial fraud pending investigation.””
Daniel stared at me.
The confidence was gone.
“You think you won?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I glanced around the apartment.
The place he tried to steal from me.
The place where he thought he owned me.
“I think I finally stopped losing.””
As officers escorted him away, his phone fell from his pocket.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
One name.
I saw it before the officer picked up the phone.
And my blood froze.
Because Daniel wasn’t the only Whitmore hiding secrets.
The message was from someone I thought was dead.
May you like
And it said:
*“The plan failed. We need to deal with Claire before she finds the rest.””*
