Chapter 4: The Folder With My Name On It
The folder was waiting for me at a private law office downtown.
I almost didn’t go.
Almost.
A part of me wanted to return home, lock the door, and pretend none of this had happened.
But I had spent too many years pretending.
So I walked into the office wearing a loose sweater over my hospital clothes, one hand pressed carefully against my injured side.
The receptionist looked up.
“Claire Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“She’s expecting you.””
“She?””
The receptionist smiled.
“Margaret Whitmore.””
My steps stopped.
Daniel’s aunt.
The woman who sold me the apartment.
The woman who had always been different from the rest of the Whitmores.
She was sitting near the window when I entered.
Older.
Elegant.
Tired.
“Claire.””
I sat across from her.
“You knew?””
Margaret didn’t pretend.
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“You knew Daniel was like this?””
She looked down.
“I knew he was becoming like his father.””
The answer hurt.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I was wrong.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Financial records.
Photos.
I looked through them.
My hands started shaking.
“Daniel has been moving money.””
Margaret nodded.
“For years.””
“Where?””
“Into accounts controlled by his family.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
“Because they believe marriage is ownership.””
The words were almost identical to what Daniel had said.
You live here because my family allows it.
I felt sick.
Margaret continued.
“Your father knew.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“He discovered their plans before he died.””
I looked at Emily’s notebook.
Everything connected.
“What plans?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she pushed one document forward.
It was a proposal.
A business agreement.
My name was on it.
But I had never signed it.
“What is this?””
“A transfer document.””
My stomach tightened.
“Transfer of what?””
Margaret looked directly at me.
“Your inheritance.””
The room went silent.
“They wanted access to your money.””
I stared at the papers.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Margaret’s voice softened.
“Daniel didn’t marry you because you were convenient.””
My throat tightened.
“He married me because of my inheritance.””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The truth was already sitting between us.
My marriage.
My home.
My family.
Everything had been part of a plan.
My phone suddenly rang.
Emily.
I answered immediately.
“Emily?””
Her voice was panicked.
“Claire, you need to come back.””
“What happened?””
“Daniel is at the apartment.””
My grip tightened.
“He can’t be there.””
“He says he has rights.””
I stood.
“Emily, call the police.””
“I already did.””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“But Claire…”
“What?””
“He didn’t come alone.””
My heart sank.
“Who is with him?””
Emily went quiet.
Then:
“Vanessa.””
I looked at Margaret.
Because suddenly I understood.
Vanessa wasn’t just Daniel’s assistant.
She wasn’t just a woman staying too close to my husband.
She was connected to something bigger.
I grabbed my coat.
As I reached the door, Margaret spoke.
“Claire.””
I turned.
“Be careful.””
“Why?””
May you like
Her face was serious.
“Because Vanessa is not the person Daniel told you she was.””
