Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Door
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because of the pain.
The pain was simple.
Physical pain had edges.
You could point to it.
Measure it.
Treat it.
The pain of betrayal was different.
It lived in places nobody could see.
At sunrise, I sat beside the hospital window and watched the city wake up.
Cars moved below.
People walked with coffee cups.
Everyone continued living.
Meanwhile, my entire world had collapsed.
A nurse brought my discharge papers.
“Your sister is here.””
I froze.
“My sister?””
Before I could ask more, the door opened.
Emily Bennett walked in carrying a small bag.
The second she saw me, her face broke.
“Oh my God.””
I looked away.
I didn’t want sympathy.
Not yet.
Emily sat beside me.
“Claire.””
“I’m okay.””
She gave me a look.
“You have two broken ribs.””
“I’m alive.””
Her expression softened.
“That’s not the same thing.””
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then she reached into her bag.
“I brought you something.””
It was a small notebook.
My father’s old notebook.
The one he used when he managed his businesses.
I stared at it.
“Why do you have this?””
“Because I found it when I cleaned out Mom’s storage.””
I touched the cover.
“What does this have to do with Daniel?””
Emily hesitated.
That hesitation made my heart drop.
“Emily.””
She sighed.
“I didn’t want to tell you until I knew.””
“Knew what?””
She opened the notebook.
Near the back were several handwritten notes.
My father’s handwriting.
Sharp.
Precise.
I read the first line.
“People reveal themselves when they believe they have power over you.””
I frowned.
“What is this?””
Emily turned the page.
“He wrote about the Whitmores.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“Dad investigated them before you married Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because he didn’t trust them.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
I remembered my father’s last conversation with me before I married Daniel.
Be careful who makes you feel lucky.
At the time, I thought he meant business.
I thought he was worried about money.
I never imagined he meant my marriage.
Emily pointed to another page.
“Claire, there’s more.””
Before she could continue, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Claire?””
I recognized it.
Vanessa.
Daniel’s assistant.
“What do you want?””
There was silence.
Then:
“I need to talk to you before Daniel finds out.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“About what?””
Her voice trembled.
“About the reason he wanted me staying at your apartment.””
I looked at Emily.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t say.””
“Then why call me?””
Another pause.
“Because last night changed everything.””
I stood slowly.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Daniel didn’t tell you the truth about your marriage.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What truth?””
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Emily looked worried.
“Claire.””
I looked back at my father’s notebook.
At the words he had written years ago.
People reveal themselves when they believe they have power over you.
Then my phone buzzed again.
This time, it was a message.
From Vanessa.
A photo.
I opened it.
And my entire body went cold.
It was a picture of a folder.
May you like
A legal folder.
With my name written across the front.
