Chapter 8

Evelyn came for me through society.

Not courts first.

Society.

She called charities.

Board members.

Magazine editors.

Women who smiled at luncheons while sharpening knives under napkins.

The message spread.

Amelia had always been unstable.

Amelia trapped Dominic.

Amelia humiliated the Vale name.

Then Thomas Reed hosted a dinner.

My father’s old friend.

Quiet.

Powerful.

Unimpressed by inherited arrogance.

He invited every person Evelyn had called.

Then played the security video on a screen after dessert.

Not the slaps.

The after.

Dominic ordering me out.

My ring on the counter.

Victor confirming ownership.

Then he played audio from Evelyn’s call.

If you destroy him, the children will suffer.

The room went cold.

Thomas stood.

“Eleanor Vale spent years pretending Amelia was a decorative wife. Let the record show Amelia owns the store, saved the company, protected the children, and has more restraint than I do.”

Someone coughed.

Maybe laughed.

Evelyn left before coffee.

The social war ended quickly after that.

People still whispered.

But now they whispered away from me.

Good.

I had no use for rooms that required my humiliation as admission.

At the store, employees began telling the truth.

Dominic had screamed at junior staff.

Serena had taken pieces “on approval” and never returned them.

Evelyn had ordered discounts for friends and billed them as charitable donations.

Victor handed me years of quiet records.

“I should have come sooner,” he said.

“Yes,” I answered.

He nodded.

“I know.”

Then I promoted him to interim operations director because guilt plus courage can become useful if supervised.
