Chapter 12

Evelyn was released before Dominic.

White-collar sentencing is rarely satisfying.

But her probation conditions barred her from contacting me, the children, or the company.

She violated them in three months.

Of course.

A handwritten note arrived at Grace’s school.

Dear sweetheart, your mother destroyed our family.

Grace brought it home unopened because she recognized Evelyn’s handwriting from old birthday cards.

My hands shook when she gave it to me.

“Did I do good?” she asked.

I hugged her tightly.

“You did exactly right.”

Naomi filed the violation.

Evelyn’s probation tightened.

No more letters.

No more third-party contact.

No school proximity.

Grace asked, “Why does Grandma hate you?”

I answered carefully.

“She wanted control. I stopped giving it to her.”

Grace nodded.

“Good.”

Children make moral clarity look easy.

But that night, she cried.

Not for Evelyn exactly.

For the grandmother she wished she had.

I held her and hated every adult who made children grieve people who were still alive.
