Chapter 10

The verdict arrived on a rainy Friday.

Dominic was found guilty of assault, grand larceny, forgery, and conspiracy.

Evelyn was found guilty of conspiracy and fraud.

Serena pleaded guilty and received a reduced sentence for cooperation.

Dominic cried when the judge sentenced him.

Not for me.

Not for Grace and Noah.

For the life he lost.

Evelyn did not cry.

She stared at me with the same cold eyes she had used at family dinners when I poured tea and pretended not to hear her insults.

After court, reporters shouted.

“Amelia, do you feel vindicated?”

I stopped.

Naomi sighed beside me because she hated when I spoke unexpectedly.

“I feel tired,” I said. “But my children are safe. My company is safe. The truth is public. That is enough for today.”

That clip traveled farther than the slap.

People wrote to me.

Women whose husbands controlled family businesses.

Women erased from companies they funded.

Women called unstable when they became inconvenient.

I read every message for a while.

Then Naomi told me to sleep.

I tried.

The divorce finalized six months later.

I kept the company.

The building.

The house.

The children’s trusts.

Dominic kept his shame and a restitution order.

Supervised visitation continued.

Grace refused at first.

Noah went twice, then stopped.

The therapist said choice mattered.

So I gave them choice.

Dominic wrote letters.

Some apologetic.

Some defensive.

Some almost human.

I saved them.

May you like

Not to punish him.

To let the children decide someday what they wanted to read.
