Chapter 11

Running Vale & Co. was harder than taking it back.

Dominic had left damage everywhere.

Unpaid vendors.

Missing stones.

Staff afraid to speak.

A brand built around his charm and my silence.

I changed the locks first.

Then the culture.

No private suite.

No unchecked inventory access.

No family discounts without records.

No one touched staff phones.

No one signed anything in someone else’s name.

It sounded basic.

It felt revolutionary.

Victor thrived.

So did Lila, a gemologist Dominic had ignored because she refused to flirt with clients.

I made her head of authentication.

She cried in my office.

Then immediately corrected an appraisal Dominic had botched.

Good hire.

Grace came to the store one Saturday.

She stood under the sign and looked up.

“Why does it still say Vale?”

I swallowed.

“Because that was my father’s name too.”

“But Daddy made it feel bad.”

“Yes.”

She thought about it.

“Can we make it good again?”

My eyes filled.

“We can try.”

So we did.

The next campaign featured no Dominic.

No perfect husband-wife myth.

Just jewelry designed by women, made by artisans, and sold with transparent sourcing.

The first collection was called Grace.

My daughter hated that.

Then secretly loved it.

Noah asked if he got one too.

I told him yes.

The Noah line became tiny gold stars for children’s keepsakes.

He announced he was famous.

May you like

He was insufferable for a week.

I let him be.
