Chapter 9

I filed for divorce from a secure address.

Daniel contested nothing at first.

Then he claimed marital rights to assets.

Marcus smiled when his attorney filed that claim.

It was not a happy smile.

It was a shark smile.

The trust documents responded beautifully.

Any spouse who intentionally harms, attempts to harm, conspires to harm, or financially benefits from suspicious death or disappearance forfeits all direct and indirect claims.

The clause had my father’s fingerprints all over it.

Perfect.

Daniel’s attorney withdrew the asset claim three days later.

David’s wife filed for divorce too.

I had met her only twice.

Her name was Allison.

She sent me a letter.

I am sorry my husband helped hurt you. I am sorry I ignored the way he talked about your money. I thought it was envy. It was hunger.

Hunger.

May you like

That was the word.

Daniel and David had looked at my life and seen a meal.
