Chapter 11

I testified on the third day.
The prosecutor asked me about my childhood drowning.
I explained.
A lake.
A flipped canoe.
Water in my lungs.
Years of panic afterward.
Then he asked, “Did the defendants know about this fear?”
“Yes.”
“Did they use it?”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s attorney suggested I had fallen and misremembered due to panic.
I looked at him.
“I remember both hands.”
He paused.
I continued.
“My husband on my left. His brother behind me. Daniel’s ring scratched my arm when he pushed.”
The prosecutor showed the photo.
A faint mark.
Small.
Real.
Daniel closed his eyes.
The defense asked why I secretly learned to swim.

I answered, “Because I found my husband’s name on financial documents he had no reason to search unless he was planning a life without me.”
No more questions.
