Chapter 10

The criminal trial began eleven months later.
By then, I could sleep without waking underwater most nights.
Not all.
Most.
I had continued swimming lessons.
At first, my instructor only sat with me beside the pool while I cried.
Then I put my feet in.
Then my knees.
Then my whole body.
The first time I crossed the pool alone after the yacht, I sobbed against the wall.
My instructor said, “You made it.”
I said, “I know.”

At trial, prosecutors played the hidden camera footage.
The shove.
The shout.
The laughter.
The delayed call.
The inheritance conversation.
Then they played my emergency call to Marcus.
“They pushed me.”
The courtroom went silent.
Daniel looked down.
David stared at the wall.
I stared at both of them.
May you like
They had expected the ocean to keep my testimony.
It had not.
