Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

Richard Cole listened to the recording three times.

The first time, he sat with his hands folded.

The second time, he leaned forward.

The third time, he stopped the playback before it finished.

"That's enough.""

I looked at him.

"What did you hear?""

He removed his glasses.

"Something your father never wanted you to hear without understanding the context.""

Sarah sat beside me.

Claire stood near the office window, watching the street.

The recording had been made twenty-two years earlier.

The voices were slightly distorted, but recognizable.

Robert Hayes.

Arthur Carter.

Marcus Carter.

And a fourth voice.

Daniel.

Young Daniel.

I had heard my father's voice countless times in old home videos.

The moment I heard it through the recording, my throat tightened.

"Robert," Arthur said, "you can't expect me to surrender everything.""

My father's voice was calm.

"I'm not asking you to surrender anything that belongs to you.""

"You've frozen the accounts.""

"Because money was moved without authorization.""

Marcus interrupted.

"That's an accusation.""

My father replied, "It's a bank record.""

Paper shuffled.

Then Arthur spoke again.

"Marcus made a mistake.""

My father's voice became harder.

"A mistake worth nearly two million dollars?""

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Mr. Hayes, perhaps we can resolve this privately.""

I closed my eyes.

Even at twenty-two, his voice sounded familiar.

My father responded.

"Daniel, this is no longer a matter you can resolve with polite conversation.""

"Then what do you want?""

"Accountability.""

Marcus laughed.

"You want to destroy our family.""

"No," my father said.

"I want to protect my daughter.""

The recording continued.

Arthur eventually agreed to the settlement.

But Marcus objected.

Then came the sentence that made Richard stop the playback.

"Daniel will marry the girl if he has to. That way, the money stays where we can reach it.""

I felt as if someone had struck me.

Sarah grabbed my hand.

Richard immediately paused the recording.

"Emily—"

"Play it again.""

He looked at me.

"Are you sure?""

"Play it.""

He restarted the section.

The same sentence came through.

"Daniel will marry the girl if he has to. That way, the money stays where we can reach it.""

I stared at the speaker.

My husband had known.

Not merely suspected.

Not merely discovered my inheritance later.

He had been present when Marcus discussed marrying me as a way to gain access to my father's assets.

I felt sick.

"Did Daniel agree?""

Richard looked at the transcript.

"Listen.""

The recording continued.

Arthur spoke.

"Absolutely not. Emily is not part of this.""

Marcus replied.

"Then give me the company back.""

"You've already cost us enough.""

Marcus's voice became louder.

"You're letting Robert walk away with everything.""

My father interrupted.

"Your father is allowing you to avoid criminal charges. That's more than you deserve.""

Then Daniel spoke again.

"I won't marry someone for money.""

There was a long silence.

I stared at Richard.

He stopped the recording.

"That's what I thought," he said quietly.

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Your father believed Daniel had initially rejected Marcus's suggestion.""

I felt a strange, painful hope.

Perhaps Daniel had resisted.

Perhaps the man I married had once been better than the person he had become.

But the next section of the recording destroyed that possibility.

Marcus said, "Then why did you ask Robert for Emily's contact information?""

I stopped breathing.

Daniel replied, "Because I wanted to meet her.""

"Convenient.""

"Believe what you want.""

Then Arthur spoke.

"Daniel, if you pursue this girl, it must be because you genuinely care about her. I will not allow you to use her.""

Daniel's answer was almost inaudible.

"I understand.""

Richard stopped the recording.

I stared at the table.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I asked, "Did he actually love me?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"I can't know what was in his heart.""

I nodded slowly.

That was the worst part.

The evidence could prove what Daniel had planned.

It could prove what he had hidden.

It could prove the fraud.

But it couldn't tell me whether the man who had held me through my mother's funeral had genuinely loved me.

And somehow, that uncertainty hurt more than the money.

Claire approached the table.

"There's another section.""

Richard looked up.

"What?""

She removed a second recording from the folder.

"My mother told me to give you this only if Daniel attempted to access the trust.""

Richard inserted the second file.

The recording began with my father's voice.

"Arthur, the agreement is simple. Emily receives the assets when she turns forty. Nobody touches them before that.""

Arthur responded.

"Agreed.""

Then Marcus spoke.

"And if she refuses?""

My father answered immediately.

"Then the assets remain hers.""

Marcus laughed.

"You're leaving us with nothing.""

"Your family has already received more than it deserved.""

There was a pause.

Then Arthur asked a question.

"What happens if Daniel marries her?""

My father was silent for a moment.

Then he said something I had never heard before.

"If Daniel genuinely loves Emily, I will welcome him into our family. If he uses her to get to the money, the entire settlement becomes void, and the original evidence will be released.""

Richard paused the recording.

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

He opened the original settlement agreement.

"There's a clause here that hasn't been activated yet.""

He pointed to a paragraph near the end.

The language was dense, but he explained it carefully.

If Daniel knowingly participated in an attempt to obtain the trust assets through fraud, the original settlement could be challenged and the concealed financial records would become admissible evidence in the related proceedings.

I stared at him.

"So Daniel's actions could reopen the entire case against Marcus?""

"Yes.""

"And the evidence would become public?""

"Potentially.""

Claire folded her arms.

"That's why Marcus is desperate.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because the original records don't just show money being diverted. They show who authorized the transfers.""

I swallowed.

"Who authorized them?""

Claire glanced at Richard.

He looked down.

"Your father suspected Arthur signed the original instructions, but the evidence may identify another person.""

I remembered Marcus's words.

Ask Richard Cole why he destroyed the original partnership records.

I turned toward the attorney.

"Did you destroy anything?""

Richard looked genuinely offended.

"Absolutely not.""

"Then why would Marcus accuse you?""

"Because I refused to cooperate with him.""

He opened a locked cabinet and removed a separate folder.

"This is the original inventory of the partnership records. Your father gave me a copy shortly before he died.""

He placed it on the desk.

"One item is missing.""

I looked at the list.

The last entry was highlighted.

ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION AND SIGNATORY REGISTER.

"What is that?""

"It identifies every person who had authority to move money from the original company accounts.""

"Who has it?""

Richard looked at Claire.

She shook her head.

"I don't.""

Richard turned to me.

"I believe Daniel has it.""

My stomach tightened.

The missing register could explain why Daniel had been so desperate to find the other documents.

He might have known exactly who was responsible for the original theft.

And if that person was still involved, they could be using the old dispute to manipulate the present one.

I looked at Claire.

"Why did you say Daniel had a copy of the recording?""

"Because I saw him with it.""

"When?""

"Last Thursday.""

"Where?""

"At my mother's old house.""

She looked toward the window.

"He arrived unexpectedly. He asked me for the flash drive. When I refused, he told me he already had everything he needed.""

"Did he threaten you?""

"Not directly.""

"What did he say?""

Claire lowered her voice.

"He said that if I released the evidence, I would be destroying the wrong person.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"I asked him the same question.""

"And?""

"He told me Marcus wasn't the person I should be worried about.""

I felt a chill.

"Who was?""

Claire shook her head.

"He wouldn't say.""

Richard stood.

"Emily, I think we should contact the investigator handling Vanessa's report.""

He picked up the phone.

"There's enough evidence now to justify an immediate review of the applications.""

Before he could dial, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I looked at the screen.

Sarah shook her head.

"Don't.""

I answered anyway.

"Hello?""

"Emily.""

His voice sounded strained.

"Where are you?""

"Why?""

"I've been trying to reach you all morning.""

"I'm busy.""

"With Richard?""

I looked at the attorney.

"How do you know?""

"Because Marcus told me.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Of course he did.""

Daniel sighed.

"Listen to me. You need to stop meeting these people.""

"Why?""

"Because they don't know the whole story.""

"Neither do I. That's why I'm asking questions.""

He lowered his voice.

"Emily, have you listened to the recordings?""

I froze.

"Why?""

"Just answer me.""

"Yes.""

A long silence followed.

Then he said, "You heard the part about Marcus.""

"I heard everything.""

"Then you know he was trying to use me.""

I almost laughed.

"Are you saying you were the victim?""

"No. I'm saying I made mistakes.""

"Eleven years of mistakes?""

He didn't answer.

I looked down at my hand.

The wedding ring was still there.

I slowly twisted it around my finger.

"Daniel, did you know about my inheritance before we met?""

"Yes.""

"Did you approach me because of it?""

"No.""

"Did you marry me because of it?""

Silence.

Then he said, "I wanted to protect you.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's not an answer.""

"I did love you.""

"Did you?""

"Emily, please.""

I heard something in the background.

A door opening.

Then a woman's voice.

"Daniel? Are you coming?""

I froze.

"Who's that?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel, who's with you?""

"Nobody.""

I heard the woman again.

"Your coffee is getting cold.""

I stared at the phone.

"Are you with someone?""

"Emily, that's not important.""

My chest tightened.

"Are you having an affair?""

He exhaled.

"This isn't about that.""

I felt something inside me collapse.

"How long?""

"Emily—"

"How long have you been seeing her?""

There was a pause.

Then he said, "Since last year.""

I closed my eyes.

Last year.

While we were celebrating our tenth anniversary.

While he was telling me how lucky he was to have me.

While I was making plans for our future.

"Who is she?""

He hesitated.

"Her name is Claire.""

I looked up.

Claire Ellis had gone completely pale.

The Claire in the hotel photograph.

The woman who had approached Daniel at the trust administrator's office.

The woman sitting across from me.

I slowly turned toward her.

Daniel continued speaking.

"Emily, I know this sounds terrible, but she's involved in the original settlement. She can explain everything.""

I couldn't speak.

Claire took a step backward.

Then my husband said the words that shattered whatever remained of my trust.

"She's the person I've been staying with during the last five days.""

I looked at the woman in front of me.

She looked at me.

And suddenly, I understood why she had been so eager to meet.

She wasn't simply carrying my father's evidence.

She was carrying her own secret.

I ended the call.

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Emily, I can explain.""

I stood slowly.

"How long?""

She covered her mouth.

"Please.""

"How long have you been sleeping with my husband?""

She looked down.

And the silence that followed was the answer.

But before I could say another word, Richard's office phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his expression changed.

He slowly lowered the receiver.

"Emily," he said, "the investigator has just confirmed something.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"The company that transferred the $150,000 to Daniel's account isn't registered under Marcus's name.""

"Whose name is it under?""

Richard looked at Claire.

May you like

Then at me.

"Yours.""
