Chapter 4: The Secret Vanessa Knew

"Emily, open the door.""

Daniel's voice came through the closed car window.

I stared at him without moving.

His expression had changed. The charming husband who had surprised me with coffee that morning was gone. In his place stood a man whose jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle jumped near his ear.

My phone was still displaying Vanessa's message.

There's a reason Daniel chose this particular week. He knows something about you that you don't know yet.

I looked at Daniel.

"What do you want?""

He tapped the window again.

"Get out of the car. We need to talk.""

"About what?""

"About your ridiculous phone call with the bank.""

My stomach tightened.

"How do you know I spoke to the bank?""

He froze.

Only for a second, but I saw it.

Then he leaned closer.

"Because Linda called me afterward. She's making a mistake, and I need to explain it to you.""

I unlocked the door but didn't open it.

"What mistake?""

"She's misunderstanding some financial arrangements.""

"Four hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars is a misunderstanding?""

His face hardened.

"Keep your voice down.""

I stared at him.

"Why? Are you afraid Rachel will hear?""

"Emily, please.""

He lowered his voice.

"Get inside the house. We can discuss this without involving other people.""

I looked at my phone.

Vanessa had sent another message.

Don't confront him alone. He knows the documents are missing.

Missing documents?

I quickly typed.

What documents?

The response came almost immediately.

The original documents that prove you never authorized the loans. Daniel has been trying to find them since Wednesday.

I looked toward the house.

Daniel was still waiting.

"What documents?"" I asked him.

His expression changed.

"What?""

"The original loan documents. What happened to them?""

He stared at me.

Then he looked at my phone.

"Who are you talking to?""

"Answer my question.""

He reached for the driver's door handle.

I immediately pressed the lock button.

"Don't.""

His hand dropped.

For several seconds, we stared at each other through the glass.

Then he stepped backward.

"You're making a serious mistake, Emily.""

I started the engine.

He moved aside reluctantly.

As I reversed out of the driveway, I saw Rachel standing in the front doorway with Sophie beside her.

Rachel raised one hand.

I couldn't tell whether she was waving goodbye or asking me to stop.

I drove away.

Ten minutes later, I pulled into a busy coffee shop parking lot and called the number that had messaged me.

A woman answered after the second ring.

"Emily?""

"Who are you?""

"My name is Vanessa Reed.""

"Why do you know about my husband?""

There was a long silence.

Then she said, "Because I was the person who helped him file the first loan application.""

I closed my eyes.

"You helped him commit fraud?""

"I didn't know it was fraud at the time.""

"Your name is on the documents.""

"I know.""

"Your signature is on the mortgage application.""

"I know that too.""

Her voice cracked.

"Emily, I need you to understand something. Daniel told me you knew about everything. He showed me a document with your signature. He said you had authorized him to handle the transactions because you were dealing with a family medical situation.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"What family medical situation?""

"He said your mother was seriously ill.""

I stared at the steering wheel.

My mother had died six years earlier.

There had never been any medical situation.

"That's impossible.""

"I know that now.""

"How?""

"Because I spoke to Rachel.""

I sat up straighter.

"What did Rachel tell you?""

"She contacted me yesterday. She said Daniel had been asking questions about the original paperwork. She was frightened. She thought he was going to blame everything on her.""

I gripped my phone.

"Why would he blame Rachel?""

"Because the property transfer was supposed to make her responsible for part of the arrangement.""

I swallowed.

"What arrangement?""

Vanessa sighed.

"Emily, your husband didn't just take out loans. He created a company to move money between accounts. Carter Family Holdings was established about three months ago.""

I remembered the bank manager's words.

"Who owns it?""

"Daniel. But there are two other authorized signatories.""

"Who?""

"Rachel Carter and Marcus Carter.""

His brother.

The same man who had told Daniel not to mess things up.

"Why would they be involved?""

"Because Daniel told them he was protecting family assets. He said he had discovered a way to keep your house safe from creditors.""

I stared at the parking lot.

Cars came and went.

People carried coffee cups through the glass doors.

Ordinary Saturday morning life continued around me.

Meanwhile, my marriage was disintegrating one revelation at a time.

"Vanessa, what did you mean when you said Daniel knows something about me?""

She hesitated.

"Have you ever heard of a trust established by your father?""

I frowned.

"My father died when I was twenty-six.""

"I know.""

"What does that have to do with this?""

"Did he leave you anything?""

I remembered a small inheritance.

A modest amount of money that my father had saved after retiring from his construction business.

Daniel had helped me manage it when we first married.

"Some money. Not much.""

"Emily, that isn't what I mean.""

She lowered her voice.

"Your father established a family trust before he died. It was worth considerably more than the inheritance you received.""

I couldn't speak.

"What trust?""

"The Hayes Family Trust.""

My father's name had been Robert Hayes.

I hadn't heard that name attached to any financial account in years.

"How much was it worth?""

"I don't know the exact amount. But Daniel recently contacted the trust administrator requesting documents.""

"Why?""

"Because your name is the sole beneficiary.""

I felt a chill run down my back.

"My father never told me about a trust.""

"According to the documents, he wanted you to receive the principal when you turned forty.""

I looked at the clock on my dashboard.

I had turned forty two months earlier.

"How much money are we talking about?""

Vanessa paused.

"Approximately $1.8 million.""

The world seemed to stop.

My father had left me nearly two million dollars?

And Daniel knew?

I struggled to breathe.

"How long has he known?""

"At least six months.""

"How?""

"He requested information from the administrator using your personal details. He claimed you had authorized him to act on your behalf.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

For years, Daniel had encouraged me to keep our finances simple.

He handled most of the investments because he worked in corporate finance.

Whenever I asked about the old inheritance, he told me it had been transferred into our joint savings.

I had believed him.

"Vanessa, did he receive the money?""

"Not yet. The trust administrator refused to release it without your personal verification.""

I closed my eyes.

That explained the timing.

The sudden leave.

The forged signatures.

The second mortgage.

The new company.

Everything.

Daniel wasn't simply trying to cover an investment loss.

He was trying to get access to money that had never belonged to him.

"Why did you contact me now?""

"Because I made a mistake.""

Her voice broke.

"I signed as a witness on a document I believed was legitimate. Then I discovered Daniel had altered the application. He used my notary credentials on a second document without my permission.""

I sat silently.

"Why didn't you report him?""

"I did. Yesterday.""

"Then why are you calling me?""

"Because the investigator asked me to identify the person whose signature appeared on the documents. And I recognized your name.""

She paused.

"Emily, there is one more thing.""

I closed my eyes.

I didn't know if I could handle another revelation.

"Tell me.""

"Daniel visited the trust administrator on Thursday. He was accompanied by a woman.""

"Who?""

"Rachel told me her name was Claire.""

I frowned.

"Claire who?""

"I don't know.""

"Was she a lawyer?""

"I think so.""

I looked at the message from Vanessa again.

"What did they ask for?""

"The administrator said Daniel wanted an emergency release of the trust funds. He claimed you were incapacitated and unable to manage your finances.""

I felt a wave of nausea.

"That's a lie.""

"I know.""

"Did the administrator believe him?""

"No. They requested a medical certification and direct confirmation from you.""

I sat back.

Then something occurred to me.

"Vanessa, did Daniel tell anyone I was sick?""

There was a pause.

"Yes.""

My stomach dropped.

"Who?""

"Apparently, several people.""

I looked through the windshield.

Across the street, an elderly couple was walking hand in hand.

I wondered how many times Daniel had told someone I was incapable of managing my own affairs.

How many times he had used my name to open doors I didn't even know existed.

"Emily," Vanessa said gently, "you need to contact an attorney immediately.""

"I will.""

"And don't go home alone.""

I swallowed.

"Why?""

"Because Daniel knows you're asking questions now.""

She lowered her voice.

"And I don't think he intends to let you stop him.""

The call ended.

I sat in the parking lot for another ten minutes.

Then I called my best friend, Sarah.

She answered cheerfully.

"Hey! I was just thinking about you.""

"Sarah, I need somewhere to stay.""

Her tone changed immediately.

"What happened?""

"I'll explain when I get there.""

"Are you safe?""

I looked at the rearview mirror.

A black SUV had just entered the parking lot.

It drove slowly past my car.

I couldn't see the driver clearly.

"Emily?""

"I'm fine.""

"Where are you?""

I gave her the coffee shop's address.

"Stay there. I'm coming.""

Twenty-five minutes later, Sarah arrived.

She took one look at my face and wrapped her arms around me.

"What's going on?""

I started crying.

Not quietly.

Not gracefully.

I cried the way someone cries when the ground beneath their entire life has suddenly disappeared.

Sarah held me until I could speak.

Then I showed her the bank messages.

The forged documents.

The property agreement.

And finally, Vanessa's message about my father's trust.

Sarah stared at the screen.

"One point eight million?""

I nodded.

She slowly lowered the phone.

"Emily, we need a lawyer.""

"I know.""

"And you need to freeze your credit.""

"I know.""

"And you're not going back to that house.""

I looked down.

"My passport is there. My father's photographs. Everything.""

"Then we'll get them later.""

My phone vibrated.

Daniel.

I ignored the call.

A message appeared.

Emily, come home. We need to talk.

Then another.

I know Vanessa contacted you.

I looked at Sarah.

She read the message and shook her head.

"Don't answer.""

A third message arrived.

This one was different.

You don't understand what your father left you. There are things in that trust that could destroy both of us.

I stared at the screen.

My father.

The trust.

Both of us.

May you like

For the first time, I wondered whether Daniel had discovered something about my family that even I didn't know.

And if he had, why was he so desperate to get the money before Monday?
