Chapter 7: The Marriage That Was Never an Accident

I spent Sunday night looking at the photograph of Daniel and my father.

I enlarged it until the pixels became blurry, hoping I had misunderstood what I was seeing.

But there was no misunderstanding.

Daniel was standing beside Marcus Carter, wearing a dark suit and holding a white envelope. My father stood between them, his expression serious.

The photograph had been taken three weeks before Daniel and I supposedly met by accident at a charity fundraiser.

Three weeks.

I had spent eleven years believing our relationship began with a chance encounter.

Now I was wondering whether I had been selected before I even knew his name.

Sarah sat beside me on the sofa.

"Emily, you need to consider the possibility that this was planned.""

I stared at the photograph.

"I know.""

"Have you told Richard?""

"Not yet.""

"Then call him.""

I picked up my phone.

Richard answered after two rings.

"Emily? Is everything all right?""

"No. I received a photograph from someone named Claire Ellis.""

He became quiet.

"What photograph?""

I described it.

There was a long pause.

Then he said, "Where did you get her contact information?""

"She contacted me.""

"Did she explain why?""

"She says she has something that belonged to my father.""

Richard sighed.

"Emily, I was hoping she would contact you eventually.""

"Do you know her?""

"Yes. Claire is Margaret Ellis's daughter. Her mother was your father's business partner and the person responsible for preserving the original company records.""

"Why would she have a photograph of Daniel with my father?""

"I don't know. But I suspect it relates to the second agreement.""

I looked at the handwritten note.

There is a second agreement.

"Richard, did my father know Daniel before I met him?""

"I believe so.""

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because your father asked us not to interfere in your personal life unless there was evidence that the original settlement was being challenged.""

I closed my eyes.

"Well, someone is challenging it now.""

"Then you should meet Claire. But don't go alone.""

I agreed.

After ending the call, I sent Claire a message.

Where can we meet?

Her response came almost immediately.

Tomorrow morning. 10 a.m. The old Riverside Hotel. Come alone if possible.

I stared at the final sentence.

Sarah shook her head.

"No.""

"I know.""

"We'll go together.""

I didn't argue.

Monday morning arrived with gray skies and a cold wind.

Sarah drove us to the Riverside Hotel, an old building near the river that had recently been renovated into a boutique hotel.

Claire was waiting in the lobby.

She was in her early forties, with shoulder-length brown hair and a dark green coat. A leather folder rested on the table in front of her.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Emily?""

"Claire?""

She glanced at Sarah.

"Who's this?""

"My best friend.""

Claire nodded.

"That's probably a good thing.""

We sat down.

She ordered coffee but didn't touch it.

"I've been trying to decide how to explain this without making everything sound worse than it is.""

I looked at her.

"Then start with the truth.""

Claire opened her folder.

"Your father and my mother were business partners for almost fifteen years. They built Carter Industrial Holdings together with Arthur Carter.""

"I know that much.""

"Then you know about the financial dispute.""

"Yes.""

Claire nodded.

"What you don't know is that the dispute wasn't simply about missing money.""

She removed a photocopy of an old contract.

"This was signed six months before your father died.""

I studied the document.

It was an agreement between Robert Hayes and Arthur Carter.

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

Arthur's signature was beside it.

But there was a third signature.

Daniel Carter.

I stared.

"Why is Daniel on this?""

Claire leaned forward.

"Because Daniel was involved in the original arrangement.""

"How old was he?""

"Twenty-two.""

I looked at the date.

Daniel had been twenty-two when the contract was signed.

I was eighteen.

"What did he agree to?""

Claire turned the page.

"The agreement established that the remaining commercial assets would be transferred into a trust for your benefit when you reached forty.""

I nodded.

"That's what Richard explained.""

"There's more.""

She pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"Daniel was appointed as a provisional administrator. He would receive a management fee if he maintained the assets until the trust matured. But he was not allowed to become a beneficiary.""

I read the clause again.

"Why would my father give Daniel that responsibility?""

"Because Arthur requested it.""

"Why?""

Claire hesitated.

"Arthur believed Daniel was the only member of his family who could be trusted to follow the agreement.""

I felt a strange bitterness.

"My father trusted him too.""

"Yes.""

Claire removed another document.

"This is the part you need to understand.""

It was a handwritten letter from Arthur Carter.

Robert,

I have spoken with Daniel. He understands the responsibility and agrees to protect Emily's interests. He also understands that the arrangement must remain confidential until the trust matures.

I looked up.

"Confidential?""

Claire nodded.

"Your father didn't want you to feel obligated to marry someone because of a financial agreement.""

My chest tightened.

"Did Daniel know about me?""

"Yes.""

"Before we met?""

"Yes.""

I pushed the letter away.

"Then our relationship was arranged.""

Claire shook her head.

"Not exactly.""

"How is it not exactly?""

"Your father never instructed Daniel to marry you. He only asked him to protect the trust.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did Daniel approach me?""

Claire looked uncomfortable.

"That's what I've been trying to establish.""

She opened a smaller envelope.

Inside was a printed email.

The date was eleven years earlier.

The sender was Marcus Carter.

The recipient was Daniel.

The subject line read:

Don't forget what we agreed.

I began reading.

You know why Dad trusted you with this. If you want the company back, you need to keep Robert's daughter close. Once she reaches forty, the assets will be worth enough to settle everything.

My hands went cold.

I continued.

Don't make the mistake of thinking this is about love. Dad gave us one opportunity to recover what Robert took. Don't waste it.

I stopped.

Sarah put a hand on my arm.

I looked at Claire.

"Did Daniel respond?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

She turned the page.

Daniel's reply was short.

I'll handle it. She won't suspect anything.

I couldn't breathe.

For several seconds, I heard nothing but the distant noise of the hotel lobby.

Then I whispered, "Eleven years.""

Claire lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

I stood up.

Sarah immediately followed.

I walked toward the window, trying to steady myself.

Eleven years of birthdays.

Eleven years of anniversaries.

Eleven years of photographs, vacations, Christmas mornings, and quiet evenings.

Had he ever loved me?

Or had I simply been the easiest path to an inheritance?

I remembered our wedding day.

Daniel had cried when I walked toward him.

He had promised to love me through every difficult season.

I remembered him holding my hand when my mother died.

I remembered him sitting beside me in the hospital when I had surgery.

Were those moments real?

Or had he been performing a role for so long that even he had forgotten where the acting ended?

Claire approached.

"Emily, there's something else.""

I turned.

"What?""

"Your father suspected Daniel might eventually change his mind.""

"Why?""

"Because Marcus was pressuring him.""

She placed a small flash drive on the table.

"My mother gave me this shortly before she died.""

I looked at it.

"What is it?""

"Copies of the original company records. Emails, financial transfers, and recordings.""

"Recordings?""

Claire nodded.

"Your father recorded a meeting with Arthur and Marcus shortly before the settlement was signed.""

I picked up the flash drive.

"Does it mention Daniel?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Sarah.

She was already taking out her phone.

"We need to give this to Richard.""

Claire nodded.

"There's another reason I contacted you.""

She took a deep breath.

"Daniel knows I have these records.""

I froze.

"How?""

"He contacted me last Thursday. He offered me $100,000 to hand over the flash drive.""

I stared at her.

"Did you accept?""

"No.""

"Did you tell him you had it?""

"I told him I needed time to consider his offer.""

I looked toward the hotel entrance.

"Does he know you're meeting me?""

Claire didn't answer.

Then her phone buzzed.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face went pale.

"What?""

She turned the phone toward me.

A message from Daniel.

I know you're with Emily. Give me the records before this gets worse.

My heart began pounding.

Sarah stood.

"We're leaving.""

Claire quickly closed the folder.

But before we could move, a man appeared near the hotel entrance.

Marcus Carter.

He looked older than the last time I had seen him, but his expression was unmistakable.

He wore an expensive navy coat and carried a leather briefcase.

His eyes moved across the lobby until they found us.

Then he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not with surprise.

Like someone who had finally found the people he had been searching for.

"Well," he said, approaching our table.

"I suppose the family meeting has started without me.""

Sarah stepped between us.

"Who invited you?""

Marcus ignored her.

He looked directly at me.

"Emily. It's been a long time.""

I stood.

"Stay away from me.""

He placed his briefcase on the table.

"That's a rather dramatic way to greet your husband's uncle.""

I frowned.

"You're his brother.""

"Exactly.""

He pulled out a chair and sat down.

Then he looked at Claire.

"Give me the drive.""

Claire shook her head.

"No.""

Marcus sighed.

"Margaret always was stubborn. I suppose you inherited that.""

I stepped closer.

"Why are you trying to take my inheritance?""

He looked at me with an expression that almost resembled pity.

"Because it was never supposed to be yours.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"That's what the documents say.""

"Documents can be written by anyone.""

"My father and Arthur signed the agreement.""

"Your father manipulated my father.""

"Then why did Arthur agree?""

Marcus leaned back.

"Because he was dying.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Marcus opened his briefcase and removed a document.

"My father was seriously ill when he signed the settlement. Your father knew it. He used that weakness to force him into surrendering the company.""

Claire shook her head.

"That's not true.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Your mother helped cover it up.""

"Don't you dare talk about my mother.""

Marcus smiled.

"Then perhaps we should discuss the money she received.""

Claire went pale.

I looked between them.

"What money?""

Marcus stood.

"Emily, your father wasn't the innocent businessman you've been told about. And if you want to know what really happened, ask Richard Cole why he destroyed the original partnership records.""

He picked up his briefcase.

Then he leaned toward me.

"One more thing. Daniel wasn't the only person who lied to you.""

He walked away.

I watched him disappear through the hotel doors.

Claire remained motionless.

Finally, she whispered, "We need to leave.""

"Why?""

She looked at the flash drive in my hand.

"Because Marcus just confirmed something I've been afraid of.""

"What?""

She swallowed.

"The original recordings aren't the only copies.""

I stared at her.

"Where are the others?""

Claire looked directly into my eyes.

"Your father gave one copy to Daniel.""

My blood ran cold.

And for the first time, I understood why my husband had been so desperate to find the original evidence.

He wasn't just trying to steal my inheritance.

May you like

He was trying to destroy something that could expose his entire family.

And he might already have the key to doing it.
