Chapter 8: The Recording My Father Left Behind
My father’s voice came through the baby monitor.
A voice I had never heard before.
A voice that belonged to a man who had existed only in photographs and unanswered questions.
For my entire life, he had been a blank space.
A name on paperwork.
A face in old pictures.
A story my mother refused to finish.
And now, from the hallway outside my barricaded bathroom door, he was speaking directly to me.
"If you're hearing this, it means Nathan found my daughter.""
I stopped breathing.
My daughter moved in my arms.
I held her tighter.
Outside, nobody spoke.
Not Nathan.
Not Lily.
Not anyone.
It was like the entire house had frozen.
Then my father's voice continued.
"I prayed this day would never come.""
My eyes filled.
Not because I was sad.
Because I was angry.
Angry that a dead man could know more about my life than I did.
Angry that everyone had been protecting secrets while I lived inside a lie.
"Emma," my father said.
My heart stopped.
He knew my name.
"I don't know how old you will be when you hear this.""
A small crack appeared in his voice.
"But if you're listening, I need you to know one thing first.""
The hallway was silent.
"You were never the reason anyone suffered.""
I covered my mouth.
A sentence.
Just one sentence.
But it felt like someone had reached through time and lifted a weight I had carried without knowing.
Because my whole life, I had felt like there was something wrong with me.
Something missing.
Something people refused to explain.
My father continued.
"I know people will tell you different stories.""
A pause.
"Some will say I was a thief.""
My eyes moved toward the door.
Nathan.
"Some will say I destroyed a family.""
Another pause.
"But the truth is more complicated.""
Claire whispered through the phone.
"He's telling the truth.""
I almost forgot she was there.
"How do you know?""
"Because I heard part of this recording before.""
My heart raced.
"What?""
"Years ago.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Her voice broke.
"Because I was afraid.""
I looked at the speaker.
Afraid.
Everyone around Nathan seemed to have one thing in common.
They were afraid.
My father's voice continued.
"Nathan, if you are hearing this...""
A silence followed.
Then:
"I am sorry.""
My eyebrows pulled together.
Sorry?
To Nathan?
The hallway suddenly came alive.
Nathan shouted:
"Turn it off.""
The panic in his voice was unmistakable.
Not anger.
Fear.
"Turn it off, Lily.""
"No.""
Lily's voice shook.
"No, he deserves to hear this.""
Nathan moved closer.
"Give me the device.""
"You lied to me.""
"Lily.""
"No.""
Her voice became stronger.
"You told me Emma's father destroyed your family.""
A pause.
"You never told me he saved you.""
I closed my eyes.
So that part was true.
My father saved him.
Nathan had spent years chasing revenge against the man who had saved his life.
My father continued.
"Nathan was fifteen years old when I found him.""
I froze.
Fifteen.
"He was trapped inside the building.""
The fire.
The fire my mother had mentioned.
"I pulled him out.""
My breathing slowed.
"I wanted to believe saving him would be enough.""
A pause.
"But some wounds don't come from what happens to you.""
The recording crackled.
"They come from what you choose to become afterward.""
The hallway was silent.
Nathan whispered:
"Stop.""
My father continued.
"Your father was not the enemy, Nathan.""
A pause.
"Your father was the person who tried to save you.""
My skin went cold.
The message wasn't for me.
It was for him.
Twenty-five years ago, my father had known exactly what Nathan might become.
"After the fire, I discovered what your family had been hiding.""
The recording continued.
"Your father was involved in illegal financial dealings. He wasn't alone.""
I looked at Claire.
She nodded slightly, even though she couldn't see me.
"My father?""
I whispered.
Claire answered:
"Nathan's father.""
The recording continued.
"I made copies of everything.""
My heart raced.
"The documents. The transactions. The names.""
The truth.
The thing everyone had been chasing.
"My mistake was trusting the wrong person.""
Silence.
Then:
"I trusted someone inside Nathan's family.""
A sound came from the hallway.
Nathan.
"No.""
My father's voice continued.
"Someone who convinced me the evidence would be safe.""
A pause.
"Someone who wanted it for themselves.""
The recording stopped.
For three seconds, there was nothing.
Then it resumed.
A different section.
My father's voice sounded older.
More tired.
"If Nathan ever finds this, he will believe I ruined his life.""
A pause.
"But the truth is, I tried to save him twice.""
My eyes widened.
Twice.
"The first time was from the fire.""
A long silence.
"The second time was from becoming his father.""
My stomach tightened.
Nathan's footsteps moved away.
"Where did you get this?""
His voice was directed at Lily.
"You searched my office?""
Lily answered:
"I found it hidden behind your desk.""
A pause.
"Along with the files.""
Nathan went quiet.
"You kept files on Emma.""
No answer.
"On me.""
Still nothing.
"On Claire.""
A pause.
"On everyone.""
Nathan finally spoke.
"You don't understand.""
Lily laughed.
"No.""
Her voice trembled.
"I understand perfectly.""
I heard footsteps.
Then a crash.
I flinched.
My baby woke up crying.
I immediately held her close.
"It's okay.""
But my eyes stayed on the door.
The recording continued.
My father's voice returned.
"Emma, if Nathan found you, then he probably believes you have something I left behind.""
My heart stopped.
Something.
"He's wrong.""
I frowned.
Wrong?
"The thing I left behind was never money.""
The recording crackled.
"It was a choice.""
I listened.
"Every person has a moment where they decide who they are.""
My father's voice softened.
"Nathan had his.""
A pause.
"And now you have yours.""
I felt tears fall.
Not because I understood.
Because I didn't.
"Your mother will tell you to run.""
A pause.
"She will tell you to hide.""
My eyes widened.
Because that was exactly what she had done.
"She does this because she loves you.""
Another pause.
"But hiding from the truth only gives people like Nathan more power.""
My daughter grabbed my shirt.
I kissed her forehead.
The recording continued.
"Emma, there is one thing you must find.""
I leaned closer.
"The original birth certificate.""
My heart stopped.
"Not the copy.""
A pause.
"The original.""
I looked at my phone.
At Nathan's message.
At the secret.
"Because the name written there will explain why Nathan chose you.""
The recording ended.
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Then Nathan spoke.
His voice was different.
Broken.
"I didn't know.""
Lily answered:
"Didn't know what?""
A pause.
"That he left that message.""
I frowned.
Message?
My father's recording wasn't the only thing.
There was more.
Claire suddenly spoke.
"Emma.""
"What?""
"You need to get out of that bathroom.""
I looked toward the door.
"Why?""
"Because if Nathan knows the recording exists...""
She stopped.
"What?""
"Emma.""
Her voice became urgent.
"He will stop protecting the secret.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What does that mean?""
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"It means he was never trying to destroy you.""
I waited.
"He was trying to find something.""
The room went silent.
"What?""
Claire whispered:
"The original birth certificate.""
My heart raced.
The same thing my father mentioned.
The same thing Nathan had been searching for.
I looked at my daughter.
Then at the door.
Outside, Nathan suddenly spoke.
"Emma.""
I froze.
"I know you heard everything.""
I didn't answer.
"I know you think I'm the enemy.""
His voice cracked.
For the first time, he sounded almost human.
"But there is something your father never told you.""
I stayed silent.
"Something even Claire doesn't know.""
A pause.
Then:
"Your birth certificate isn't hidden because of me.""
My fingers tightened around my phone.
"It's hidden because your father changed your identity before he died.""
I felt the room tilt.
Changed my identity.
Why?
Nathan whispered:
"Because Emma wasn't your first name.""
My blood went cold.
The baby monitor clicked.
And then he said the name I had never heard before.
May you like
The name that belonged to a life I didn't remember.
"Your real name is Sarah.""
