Chapter 5: The Name On The Birth Certificate
I read Nathan’s message three times.
Then a fourth.
*"Ask her why she never told you who your real father was.""*
My mind refused to process it.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I understood them too well.
Real father.
Two words that should have meant nothing.
Two words that suddenly made every strange conversation, every avoided question, every uncomfortable silence from my mother feel like pieces of a puzzle I never knew I was solving.
I looked down at my daughter.
Her tiny hand was wrapped around my finger.
She trusted me completely.
And for the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to inherit a secret you never asked for.
A loud удар against the bathroom door pulled me back.
"Emma!""
Nathan.
The cabinet shifted again.
I immediately stepped backward, keeping my baby pressed against my chest.
"Open the door.""
His voice was no longer calm.
The mask was slipping.
"Emma, I know you're confused.""
I stared at the door.
"You don't know anything about me.""
A pause.
Then he laughed quietly.
"I know more than you think.""
The words crawled under my skin.
Not because they were threatening.
Because they sounded true.
How long had he known?
How long had he been watching?
The phone in my hand buzzed.
Claire.
I answered immediately.
"Claire.""
My voice shook.
"What is happening?""
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then:
"He told you about your father.""
It wasn't a question.
My stomach dropped.
"You knew?""
Claire exhaled.
"Not everything.""
I looked toward the door.
"You knew?""
"Emma, listen to me. Nathan has spent years collecting information about people. He doesn't just meet someone. He studies them.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Why?""
"Control.""
The answer came too quickly.
"He likes knowing things other people don't. He likes having something they don't want exposed.""
I looked at the baby monitor.
The tiny light blinked.
"How did he know about my family?""
Claire hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me more than anything else.
"Because your mother was connected to his family.""
I froze.
"What does that mean?""
Before Claire could answer, Nathan spoke through the door.
"Emma, don't listen to her.""
I turned toward the door.
"She lost her daughter because she couldn't tell the truth.""
Claire went silent.
I whispered:
"Is that true?""
A long pause.
Then Claire said:
"I made mistakes.""
My heart sank.
"But losing Mia wasn't because of what he said.""
Her voice became firmer.
"It happened because he convinced everyone I was someone I wasn't.""
I closed my eyes.
The pattern.
Again.
The same pattern.
The same word.
The same story.
I was unstable.
Claire was unstable.
Anyone who challenged Nathan became unstable.
"Emma," Claire said, "you need to find your birth certificate.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Your original one.""
I looked around the bathroom.
"Why?""
"Because the one you've seen might not be the first one.""
My breathing stopped.
"Claire...""
"I know this sounds impossible.""
"It does.""
"I know.""
Her voice softened.
"But Nathan didn't choose you because you were convenient.""
A chill ran through me.
"He chose you because of your father.""
The baby monitor suddenly crackled.
Nathan's voice came through.
"Lily.""
I looked at the speaker.
"What are you doing?""
Lily answered quietly.
"I found something.""
Nathan went silent.
"What?""
"I found the file.""
My entire body went still.
"What file?""
No answer.
Then Nathan's voice changed.
Not angry.
Afraid.
"Give it to me.""
"No.""
The word surprised me.
Even Lily sounded surprised.
"No, Nathan.""
A pause.
"You told me Emma was dangerous.""
Another pause.
"You told me you were protecting the baby.""
My heart raced.
"But this...""
Her voice cracked.
"This is different.""
Nathan whispered something I couldn't hear.
Then Lily said:
"You lied to me about everything.""
The hallway became silent.
I looked at Claire.
"She found something.""
Claire didn't answer.
Then quietly:
"His old files.""
"What files?""
"The ones he keeps on people.""
My skin went cold.
"He keeps files?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Claire laughed sadly.
"Because he doesn't believe relationships are about trust.""
A pause.
"He believes they're about leverage.""
I looked at my phone.
At my messages.
At the evidence.
At everything I had ignored.
The small comments.
The strange questions.
The way Nathan always wanted to know exactly where I was.
Who I talked to.
What my mother said.
I had called it love.
He had called it information.
"Emma," Claire said.
I looked up.
"Find the file.""
"Where?""
"You have to search his office.""
I almost laughed.
"I am locked in a bathroom.""
"I know.""
Her voice lowered.
"But if you get out, don't go after your clothes. Don't go after your belongings.""
A pause.
"Go after the truth.""
The baby monitor clicked again.
Lily.
"I found the file.""
My heart jumped.
Nathan immediately said:
"Put it down.""
"No.""
"Lily.""
"No, Nathan.""
Her voice was shaking.
"But I know this name.""
Silence.
Then:
"What name?""
She whispered:
"Emma's.""
My entire body froze.
The bathroom door suddenly stopped moving.
Even Nathan went quiet.
"What did you say?""
Lily answered:
"Her name is on this document.""
My hands went numb.
Claire whispered through the phone:
"Emma.""
I couldn't speak.
Because I already knew.
Whatever was in that file connected me to Nathan before I ever met him.
A man who claimed we were meant to be.
A man who said our love was destiny.
A man who somehow knew my deepest secrets before I told him.
The baby monitor crackled.
Lily sounded terrified.
"Nathan...""
"What?""
"Why does this say you were assigned to watch her?""
My blood turned cold.
Watch her.
Not meet her.
Not love her.
Watch her.
Nathan didn't answer.
"Lily.""
His voice was dangerous.
"Give me the file.""
"No.""
"You don't understand.""
"No, I think I finally do.""
A pause.
Then Lily whispered:
"You didn't marry Emma.""
My heart stopped.
"You targeted her.""
The hallway went silent.
And then Nathan said something that made every hair on my body rise.
Something that confirmed my worst fear.
"I didn't have a choice.""
Claire gasped softly.
"What?""
Nathan continued.
"Her father left something behind.""
I stared at the wall.
Her father.
My father.
The man I never knew.
The man everyone refused to talk about.
"What did he leave?"" Lily asked.
Nathan didn't answer.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Claire.
*"Emma, you need to know something before Nathan tells you his version.""*
Another message appeared.
*"Your father wasn't a stranger.""*
I stared.
The next message came.
*"Your father was the reason Nathan's family lost everything.""*
The bathroom felt silent.
Too silent.
Outside the door, Nathan whispered:
"Emma.""
I looked toward him.
"Your mother lied to you.""
My hand tightened around my daughter.
"And Claire only knows half the story.""
Another buzz.
A final message from Claire.
*"The man you married has been waiting for twenty-five years to get revenge.""*
I stopped breathing.
Twenty-five years.
I was only twenty-nine.
My entire life suddenly felt like someone else's story.
Then Nathan said the words that shattered the last piece of certainty I had.
"Open the door, Emma.""
A pause.
"Because when you find out who your father was...""
His voice dropped.
"You'll understand why I was the only person who could save you.""
The baby monitor clicked off.
May you like
And for the first time that night, I wasn't afraid of what Nathan would do.
I was afraid of what I would discover about myself.
