Chapter 2: The Secret He Buried Before Me

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

*"Emma, you need to know what your husband did before he married you.""*

My first instinct was to delete it.

Not because I didn't believe it.

Because I was terrified that I did.

The bathroom suddenly felt smaller.

The walls seemed closer.

My daughter slept against my shoulder, completely unaware that the person who was supposed to protect her was standing on the other side of the door, trying to take her away.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*"Don't tell Nathan you received this.""*

My heart pounded.

A second later:

*"He will know exactly who I am.""*

I looked toward the door.

The house was quiet now.

Too quiet.

Nathan had stopped talking.

Lily had stopped whispering.

They were waiting.

Or planning.

Maybe both.

I typed back.

*Who are you?*

The three dots appeared almost immediately.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Whoever was on the other end was hesitating.

Finally, the reply came.

*"Someone who ignored the warning signs because I thought I could fix him.""*

My fingers went cold.

I looked down at my sleeping daughter.

A warning.

That was what I had missed.

Not one warning.

Hundreds.

The first one came before our wedding.

I just didn't recognize it.

I remembered the night Nathan proposed.

We were standing outside a little restaurant downtown, the kind of place with tiny tables and candles on every surface. Rain tapped against the windows, and he kept squeezing my hand like he was afraid I would disappear.

"You know what I love about you?"" he had said.

I smiled.

"What?""

"You believe the best in people.""

At the time, I thought it was a compliment.

I thought he saw kindness in me.

Now, sitting on a bathroom floor with my newborn in my arms, I wondered if he saw something else.

Someone easy to convince.

Someone who would explain away every ugly moment.

The phone buzzed again.

*"His first wife tried to tell people.""*

I stopped.

First wife.

I read the words again.

My chest tightened.

Nathan had never mentioned a first wife.

Not once.

I typed quickly.

*Nathan was never married before me.*

The response came.

*"That's what he told you?""*

I felt dizzy.

I looked at the baby monitor.

The tiny green light blinked.

Recording.

I grabbed my phone and opened the camera.

I wanted proof.

Everything.

The bruises.

The room.

The monitor.

The messages.

Something inside me knew that if I survived this night, I would need every piece of evidence I could collect.

The bathroom mirror reflected my face.

I almost didn't recognize myself.

My hair was tangled.

My cheek was red and swollen.

There was a small cut near my jaw.

A few hours ago, I had stood in front of that same mirror holding my daughter and thinking about how exhausted I looked.

I had laughed at myself.

I had whispered, "New mom life.""

I never imagined I would be documenting injuries caused by my own husband.

The phone buzzed.

*"Her name was Claire.""*

I froze.

*"She had a daughter.""*

My hand covered my mouth.

No.

No, that couldn't be true.

Nathan had told me he always wanted a child.

He told me I was the first person he had ever imagined building a family with.

He told me his past relationships ended because women were "too emotional.""

That phrase suddenly sounded different.

I had heard it so many times.

About his ex-girlfriend.

About his coworkers.

About women in movies.

Everyone was too emotional.

Everyone except him.

I typed:

*What happened to Claire?*

This time, the reply took longer.

Almost a full minute.

Then:

*"She lost custody.""*

My stomach dropped.

I looked at my daughter.

My baby.

My whole world.

The words on the screen felt like a warning written directly to me.

*"She lost custody because Nathan convinced everyone she was unstable.""*

I stopped breathing.

The same word.

Again.

Unstable.

A word Nathan had just used against me.

A word he was already preparing to use in court.

The baby shifted slightly.

I immediately stopped moving.

I held her closer until she settled.

Then I whispered, "You're not going anywhere.""

My voice sounded stronger than I felt.

The doorknob moved.

I froze.

"Emma?""

Nathan.

His voice was low.

Not angry.

Not anymore.

That scared me more.

"Are you awake?""

I didn't answer.

He waited.

Then he sighed.

A deep, disappointed sigh.

Like I was the one who had done something wrong.

"I know you're scared.""

I stared at the door.

"I know tonight got out of control.""

My eyes burned.

Got out of control.

That was what he called it.

Not violence.

Not hurting me.

Not taking our baby.

Just something that happened.

"Emma," he continued, "I need you to understand something.""

I turned on the recorder on my phone.

Quietly.

"I am your husband.""

A pause.

"I am your daughter's father.""

Another pause.

"And I will not let you ruin our family because you can't control your emotions.""

My fingers tightened.

There it was.

Again.

The story.

The one he was creating.

I whispered into the phone, barely audible, "Keep talking.""

As if he heard me, Nathan continued.

"You need help.""

My heart sank.

"You've been struggling since the baby was born.""

I looked at my daughter.

I remembered every night I cried from exhaustion.

Every morning I apologized for being tired.

Every time Nathan told me I was lucky because "other mothers handle this.""

He wasn't comforting me.

He was documenting me.

"I've been patient," he said.

Patient.

The word almost made me laugh.

The man who dragged me across the floor was calling himself patient.

"I've protected you," he continued.

Protected me.

From what?

From himself?

Then came the sentence that made me realize exactly how prepared he was.

"If anyone asks, Lily will explain what she saw.""

My entire body went cold.

He wasn't hiding anymore.

He thought he had already won.

I glanced at my phone.

The stranger's messages were still there.

The warning.

The name Claire.

The custody battle.

Everything was connecting.

I typed:

*I need proof. Tell me everything.*

The reply came.

*"I can send you documents.""*

I stared.

*"But you need to leave before morning.""*

Before morning.

Why?

I typed:

*Why?*

The response appeared.

Then stopped.

A minute passed.

Two.

Finally:

*"Because Nathan isn't waiting for a custody hearing.""*

My heart started racing.

*"He already filed emergency paperwork.""*

I felt like the air had been knocked out of my lungs.

Emergency paperwork.

He had planned this.

Before tonight.

Before the fight.

Before the bathroom.

This wasn't a reaction.

It was a strategy.

I looked at the cabinet blocking the door.

At my daughter.

At the phone recording.

Everything suddenly became clear.

Nathan didn't want to convince me.

He wanted to convince everyone else.

The police.

The court.

The people who would decide whether I got to keep holding my baby.

A soft knock came.

Not Nathan.

Lily.

"Emma?""

Her voice was different.

Not cold.

Not cruel.

Almost uncertain.

I didn't answer.

"Please.""

I looked toward the door.

"Please open the door.""

I stayed silent.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"He's not telling me everything either.""

I frowned.

What did that mean?

"Emma," she said, her voice shaking, "I think I made a mistake.""

Nathan's footsteps suddenly appeared behind her.

"Lily?""

Her voice stopped.

The silence that followed felt dangerous.

Then Nathan spoke.

"What are you doing?""

Lily didn't answer.

"Get away from the door.""

Another pause.

Then, quietly:

"You told me she was dangerous.""

My eyes widened.

"You told me she was hurting the baby.""

My hand covered my mouth.

Lily continued.

"And now I don't know if any of it was true.""

The hallway went silent.

Then Nathan said something so quietly I almost missed it.

Something that changed everything.

"Careful, Lily.""

A pause.

"You know what happened to Claire when she stopped listening.""

I stared at the door.

The stranger's message.

The first wife.

The lost custody.

It wasn't just a story from his past.

It was a pattern.

And Lily had just realized she might be the next person trapped inside it.

Then my phone buzzed one more time.

A new message.

This one had an attachment.

A photo.

I opened it.

And my blood froze.

It was a picture of Nathan.

Standing outside a courthouse.

Holding a folder.

With Claire's name printed across the top.

But that wasn't the part that made my hands shake.

It was the date.

The date on the document was from three years before I met him.

And underneath Claire's name was another name.

A child.

A daughter.

A daughter Nathan had never told me existed.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*"Emma, you need to know why he really wanted another baby.""*
