Chapter 7: The Night My Life Was Chosen For Me

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Nathan's words stayed in the air like smoke.

*"The night you were born wasn't the first time I met you.""*

My daughter cried softly beside me.

A normal baby sound.

A sound that should have meant hunger.

A diaper change.

A tired mother waking for the hundredth time.

But that night, every sound felt like a warning.

I picked her up and held her close.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I didn't know what to believe.

Because I was starting to believe too much.

The man outside my door wasn't a stranger.

He wasn't just a husband who had snapped.

He was someone who had entered my life with a purpose.

Someone who had watched me.

Studied me.

Waited.

I looked at my phone.

Claire was still on the line.

"Did you hear that?"" I whispered.

Her answer came quietly.

"Yes.""

My throat tightened.

"Tell me he's lying.""

Silence.

A painful silence.

"Claire.""

"I wish I could.""

My heart sank.

"What do you mean?""

Claire took a shaky breath.

"Because Nathan's biggest talent is mixing truth with lies.""

I looked toward the door.

"Then tell me the truth.""

Another pause.

"Your father didn't abandon you.""

I closed my eyes.

The sentence I had waited my entire life to hear.

My mother had never said it.

Not once.

Every time I asked about him, the answer was always the same.

"He left.""

But maybe that was the lie.

"Then what happened?""

Claire's voice lowered.

"Daniel found out Nathan's family was doing something illegal.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Your father discovered information about Nathan's father.""

The room felt colder.

"And?""

"And he tried to expose it.""

I looked at the bathroom wall.

"Did they kill him?""

Claire went silent.

That was enough.

My breath caught.

"Claire.""

"I don't know exactly what happened.""

"But you said Nathan was there.""

"I said he knows what happened.""

The distinction mattered.

Because Claire was careful.

She had learned to be careful.

"How?""

She sighed.

"Because Nathan told me.""

I froze.

"When?""

"Years ago.""

"Why would he tell you?""

Another silence.

Then:

"Because he wanted me to understand why he was angry.""

I held my daughter tighter.

"He confessed?""

"Not directly.""

Claire's voice became distant, like she was remembering something painful.

"Nathan never confesses. He explains.""

That was true.

Every conversation with him had been the same.

A story.

A justification.

A reason why he was right.

"What did he say?""

Claire answered slowly.

"He said his father lost everything because of Daniel.""

"Because my father exposed him?""

"That's what Nathan believed.""

Believed.

Not knew.

The word stood out.

"Nathan spent his whole life thinking your father destroyed his family.""

I looked down at my daughter.

"And he blamed me?""

"Yes.""

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

"But you said he married me because he wanted something.""

"Yes.""

"Then why have a baby with me?""

Claire didn't answer.

The silence was terrifying.

"Claire.""

Finally, she said:

"Because he realized you were not who he expected.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"It means he planned to use you.""

A pause.

"But then you became real to him.""

I almost laughed.

Real?

After everything?

After tonight?

"No.""

My voice broke.

"No, he didn't love me.""

Claire didn't argue.

"He may have.""

The answer made me angry.

"How can you say that?""

"Because people can have feelings and still hurt others.""

I looked at the door.

At the man who claimed he wanted to protect me.

At the man who had dragged me across the floor.

"Love doesn't look like this.""

"No.""

Claire's voice was quiet.

"It doesn't.""

The phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From my mother.

Not a call.

A text.

*"Emma, please answer me.""*

I stared at it.

After everything, I wanted to ignore her.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to ask why she let me grow up believing a lie.

But another part of me was still the little girl waiting for answers.

I typed:

*"Did Dad die because of Nathan's family?""*

The message showed as read.

Then nothing.

One minute.

Two.

Three.

Then:

*"Where are you?""*

My heart dropped.

Not an answer.

A question.

I typed again.

*"Mom. Did Nathan know Dad?""*

The typing bubble appeared.

Stopped.

Appeared again.

Finally:

*"Yes.""*

My entire body went still.

A second message:

*"But not the way you think.""*

I looked at Claire.

"What does that mean?""

She didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

I typed:

*"Explain.""*

My mother's reply came.

*"Your father saved Nathan's life.""*

I stopped.

The world tilted.

Saved his life?

That didn't make sense.

Nathan hated my father.

Nathan blamed my father.

Nathan wanted revenge.

My mother sent another message.

*"Nathan was a boy when it happened.""*

My fingers froze.

A boy.

A child.

Not the monster I imagined.

Not the man at my door.

A child.

"What happened?"" I whispered.

My mother replied:

*"There was a fire.""*

I stared.

*"What fire?""*

No answer.

Then:

*"The fire that killed your father.""*

My heart pounded.

The baby monitor suddenly turned on.

Nathan.

"Emma.""

I looked toward the speaker.

"I know you're talking to her.""

My blood ran cold.

How did he know?

"You always run to your mother when you're afraid.""

My grip tightened.

"You know nothing about me.""

He laughed softly.

"I know everything.""

The same words.

The same confidence.

"Ask her what happened after the fire.""

I looked at my phone.

My mother.

The message waiting.

I typed:

*"What happened after the fire?""*

Her response came instantly.

Almost like she had been waiting.

*"Nathan's father died that night too.""*

I froze.

Two deaths.

One fire.

Two families connected forever.

My mother continued:

*"Your father saved Nathan, but he couldn't save himself.""*

I stared at the screen.

Then Nathan spoke.

"You want to know the part nobody tells you?""

I looked toward the door.

"The part where your father was a hero?""

Silence.

"That's the story your mother wanted you to believe.""

My stomach tightened.

"Because the truth is more complicated.""

I hated that sentence.

Because with Nathan, it always meant something terrible was coming.

"What truth?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Your father didn't die because of my family.""

A pause.

"He died because he betrayed them.""

My phone buzzed.

Claire.

*"Don't believe him.""*

Another message.

*"He changes the story depending on who is listening.""*

I looked at Nathan's door.

"Then why did you marry me?""

Silence.

For the first time all night, he didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter.

"Because I wanted to know if your father left you the same thing he left me.""

"What?""

"The truth.""

I stared.

"You thought I had something?""

"Yes.""

"What?""

Another pause.

Then:

"A recording.""

My blood ran cold.

A recording.

The baby monitor.

The evidence.

The thing he had tried to control.

"No.""

Nathan continued.

"Your father recorded everything before he died.""

My heart raced.

"Everything about my family.""

The room went silent.

Then Lily screamed from the hallway.

"Nathan!""

I jumped.

Her voice was full of panic.

"I found it!""

Nathan immediately moved away from my door.

"What did you find?""

Lily sounded terrified.

"The recording.""

My breath stopped.

Nathan's voice changed.

"Give it to me.""

"No.""

A pause.

Then Lily whispered:

"Emma needs to hear this.""

My heart pounded.

The recording.

The truth.

The thing Nathan had spent twenty-five years searching for.

Then came a sound.

A struggle.

A crash.

And silence.

I grabbed my phone.

"Claire?""

"I'm here.""

"What happened?""

Neither of us spoke.

Because through the baby monitor, faintly, we heard Nathan.

Not angry.

Not calm.

Terrified.

And then he said a name.

Not mine.

Not Lily's.

Not Claire's.

A name that made my entire body freeze.

"Daniel.""

The man I thought had disappeared.

The man I thought was only a memory.

Nathan whispered:

"You're not supposed to exist.""

And then the recording began playing through the hallway.

A man's voice filled the house.

My father's voice.

May you like

And the first words he said were:

"If you're hearing this, it means Nathan found my daughter.""
