Chapter 9: The Truth After the Fall
I watched the full recording alone.
I wanted to believe I was prepared.
I wasn’t.
The video began the same.
The staircase.
Victoria.
The argument.
Me standing there.
Then the moment everything changed.
The push.
My body falling.
But this time, the camera continued.
Victoria walked down the stairs.
She looked at me.
Not shocked.
Not scared.
Calm.
That was the part that hurt most.
She wasn’t afraid.
Because she believed she had won.
Then she picked up my phone.
My phone.
The one that contained evidence.
The one I had used to record conversations with Dominic after I became suspicious.
Sophia watched beside me.
“She knew.””
I nodded.
Victoria didn’t call an ambulance immediately.
She called Dominic.
The audio was faint.
But clear enough.
“Mother?””
Dominic’s voice.
“She fell.””
A pause.
“What?””
“She knows.””
Silence.
Then Dominic asked:
“Is she alive?””
My heart stopped.
Because I had never heard that part.
Victoria answered:
“Yes.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Handle it.””
Sophia covered her mouth.
I stared at the screen.
Handle it.
Two words.
Two words that explained everything.
Dominic never pushed me.
But he abandoned me.
And sometimes that hurt more.
Because he had a choice.
The recording continued.
Only then did Victoria call emergency services.
Only then.
After destroying evidence.
After controlling the story.
After making sure I looked like the problem.
I turned off the video.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
Sophia looked at me.
“We can destroy them.””
I looked down.
“No.””
She frowned.
“No?””
“I don’t want to destroy them.””
“Then what?””
I thought about the baby I lost.
The family I thought I had.
The years I gave away.
“I want them to live with the truth.””
The trial became national news.
Victoria was arrested.
Dominic wasn’t charged with pushing me.
But the evidence showed he covered up the truth.
He lost everything.
The company.
The reputation.
The people who once admired him.
One week later, he asked to see me.
I agreed.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I needed closure.
We met in a quiet park.
The same kind of place where Dominic and I used to dream about the future.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
I looked at him.
“I know.””
His eyes filled.
“I loved you.””
I smiled sadly.
“Maybe you did.””
He looked surprised.
“But love without courage is just a feeling.””
He lowered his head.
I continued.
“You loved me when loving me was easy.””
A tear fell from his face.
“I wish I could change everything.””
“I know.””
“I wish I could bring back our child.””
My chest tightened.
“But you can’t.””
“No.””
He whispered.
“You can’t.””
We sat there quietly.
Then Dominic reached into his pocket.
He placed something on the table.
My old wedding ring.
I stared at it.
“I found it in the house.””
I didn’t touch it.
“That belongs to the past.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
When I stood to leave, he said my name.
“Audrey.””
I turned.
“Thank you.””
“For what?””
“For being the person I should have been.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I walked away.
For the first time in years.
I felt free.
But my story wasn’t completely finished.
Because two months later, Sophia called me.
“Audrey.””
Her voice sounded different.
“What happened?””
“We found something in your father’s trust documents.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A hidden clause.””
I sat down.
“What kind of clause?””
May you like
Sophia paused.
“One that changes everything about your inheritance.””
