Chapter 7: The Evidence They Never Expected

The courtroom was silent when I walked in.

Not because people respected me.

Because they were curious.

Everyone wanted to see the woman who supposedly abandoned Dominic Ashford.

The woman who supposedly destroyed a powerful family.

The woman nobody knew.

That was exactly how I wanted it.

I wore a simple black suit.

No designer labels.

No jewelry except my mother’s necklace.

I didn’t need to prove anything.

The truth was enough.

Dominic sat across the room.

For the first time in years, he looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone who had finally realized he had spent years destroying the one person who loved him.

His attorney stood.

“Your Honor, my client believes Mrs. Ashford intentionally concealed financial information and manipulated business operations.””

I listened.

Manipulated.

That word again.

They loved using it.

Because they knew the truth sounded unbelievable.

The woman they ignored had saved them.

The woman they insulted had protected them.

My attorney, Sophia, stood.

“Your Honor, we would like to submit evidence showing that Mrs. Ashford was not manipulating Ashford Construction.””

She placed a folder on the table.

“She was rescuing it.””

The judge looked through the documents.

The room shifted.

Dominic’s attorney frowned.

Sophia continued.

“Two years ago, Ashford Construction was facing bankruptcy.””

Dominic looked down.

“Yes,” Sophia said.

“And at that time, Sterling Vale Investment Group provided emergency funding.””

The judge looked up.

“And who owns Sterling Vale?””

Sophia turned.

“My client.””

Everyone looked at me.

The whispers started.

Sophia continued.

“Mrs. Ashford did not hide this information to deceive her husband. She hid it because she wanted a marriage based on trust.””

Dominic closed his eyes.

Because he knew that was true.

A reporter outside the courtroom later asked him:

“Mr. Ashford, did you know your wife saved your company?””

He said nothing.

That silence became the headline.

But Sophia wasn’t finished.

She presented another piece of evidence.

Security footage.

From the night I fell.

Dominic’s face changed.

Because he knew.

He had never seen it.

The video played.

The staircase.

The hallway.

Victoria entering the room.

The argument.

No audio.

But enough.

Enough to show movement.

Enough to show Victoria standing behind me.

Enough to show my body falling.

The courtroom became silent.

Then Sophia spoke.

“We are awaiting the completed investigation.””

Dominic looked at his mother.

Victoria looked terrified.

For the first time, the woman who controlled every room had lost control.

After court, Dominic followed me outside.

“Audrey.””

I kept walking.

“Please.””

I stopped.

“What?””

His face was filled with regret.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I didn’t know she would hurt you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t know because you never cared enough to look.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I loved you.””

I stared at him.

“Did you?””

He froze.

“Because love isn’t what you say when everything is easy.””

I stepped closer.

“Love is what you do when someone is hurt.””

His expression broke.

“And you weren’t there.””

That was the sentence that destroyed him.

Not the money.

Not the company.

Not the lawsuit.

The truth.

He wasn’t there.

That evening, I received a call from Detective Miller.

“Audrey?””

“Yes?””

“We found something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“A witness.””

“Who?””

The detective paused.

“Someone who was inside the mansion that night.””

I sat up.

“Who?””

May you like

His answer made my blood run cold.

“The housekeeper.””
