Chapter 6: The Lie He Told the World
Dominic Ashford stood beneath the bright lights of a press conference room and practiced looking broken.
That was the first thing I noticed when Sophia sent me the livestream link.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Performance.
He wore a dark suit. His hair was carefully styled. His expression was perfectly arranged somewhere between sadness and regret.
The same face that once convinced me I was loved.
The same face that convinced everyone else he was the victim.
“Good afternoon,” Dominic said into the microphone.
“I never imagined I would have to speak publicly about something so painful.””
Sophia sat across from me, watching my reaction.
“You don’t have to watch this.””
“Yes, I do.””
“Why?””
I looked at the screen.
“Because I want to know exactly what lie he chooses.””
The reporters began asking questions.
“Mr. Ashford, is it true your wife left without explanation?””
Dominic lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
A flash of anger moved through me.
Without explanation.
That was what he chose.
Not the hospital.
Not the fall.
Not the baby.
Not the fact that he never came.
“I tried to save our marriage,” he continued.
“But Audrey made the decision to disappear.””
Sophia clenched her jaw.
“He’s rewriting everything.””
I didn’t answer.
I watched.
A reporter raised her hand.
“Were there problems between you before she left?””
Dominic paused.
Just long enough to make people believe he was struggling.
“There were difficulties.””
Difficulties.
That word almost made me laugh.
Three years of humiliation.
Three years of being treated like an outsider.
Three years of sacrificing everything.
Difficulties.
“We had disagreements about money,” he continued.
Sophia looked at me.
“There it is.””
The trap.
Dominic leaned closer to the microphone.
“Audrey always struggled with understanding responsibility.””
My eyes narrowed.
He was going to make me look unstable.
Dependent.
Unreasonable.
Exactly like Sophia predicted.
“She became secretive,” Dominic said.
“She stopped communicating with my family.””
A reporter asked:
“Do you believe she left because she wanted financial independence?””
Dominic sighed.
“I believe she left because she wanted control.””
The room around me became completely silent.
Sophia turned off the screen.
“That’s enough.””
I stared at the black monitor.
“He’s good.””
Sophia looked surprised.
“What?””
“He’s good at making people forget what happened.””
She nodded.
“Which is why we don’t fight him emotionally.””
She opened a folder.
“We fight him with facts.””
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Company ownership papers.
Medical reports.
Security footage.
Everything they thought was buried.
Everything they thought would never see daylight.
“You’re sure about releasing all of this?””
I looked at the papers.
For a moment, I thought about Dominic.
The man who held my hand when my father died.
The man who promised he would protect me.
The man who said:
“I don’t care about your family’s money. I just want you.””
Then I remembered waking up alone.
“I’m sure.””
That evening, the internet exploded.
But not because of my response.
Because of Victoria.
A reporter had discovered something.
A leaked financial document showing Victoria Ashford had attempted to transfer ownership of several Ashford properties days after my disappearance.
Sophia showed me the article.
“She panicked.””
I looked at the screen.
Victoria’s face was everywhere.
The perfect socialite.
The respected businesswoman.
The mother who supposedly protected her family.
Now everyone wanted answers.
Then my phone rang.
Dominic.
I stared at his name.
Sophia watched me.
“Are you answering?””
I pressed accept.
“Hello.””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then:
“Audrey.””
His voice sounded different.
Not confident.
Not controlled.
Broken.
“What do you want?””
“I need to see you.””
“No.””
“Please.””
The word surprised me.
Not because it mattered.
Because I realized how rarely I had heard it from him.
“I need to explain.””
“You had three years.””
“Audrey—”
“You had three years while I stood beside you.””
Silence.
Then his voice cracked.
“I didn’t know about the baby.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The sentence he kept returning to.
The thing he believed could save him.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No, Dominic.””
My voice was calm.
“You didn’t know because you didn’t ask.””
He stopped.
“You didn’t know because you weren’t there.””
Another silence.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at the city outside my window.
“Sorry doesn’t bring back my child.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The line went quiet.
Then he whispered:
“I lost everything.””
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I remembered the hospital bed.
“I lost everything first.””
I ended the call.
But before I could put my phone down, Sophia received an alert.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward me.
A message.
From Dominic’s legal team.
They were filing a lawsuit.
The accusation?
Fraud.
My husband was claiming I had secretly manipulated his company.
Sophia stared at the message.
“He’s trying to make you the villain again.””
I looked at the notification.
Then I smiled.
Because Dominic had just made the mistake I was waiting for.
May you like
He was no longer hiding.
And now I could finally respond.
