Chapter 9

Years later.

I sat beside my mother on her porch. She was older now, but still strong. Still seeing everything that mattered.

Mrs. Sterling walked up the path. She carried a basket of fresh fruit.

She stopped before my mother.

"Do I see better now?" she asked, as she did often.

My mother smiled.

"You are learning," she said. "And that is enough."

Mrs. Sterling looked at me.

"I was so afraid that day," she admitted. "Afraid of being replaced. Afraid of losing control. So I struck out. And I humiliated the one person who deserved kindness."

"But you gave me a second chance. Both of you. You taught me that family is not about blood or money or status. It is about how we treat each other."
