Chapter 3

Mrs. Sterling stared at my mother as if seeing her for the very first time.

"You..." she whispered. "You were...?"

"I was," my mother said calmly. She wiped a stray drop of wine from her chin. "I cared for your husband until his last breath. I never asked for anything. I never spoke a word against you. Because he loved you. And I respected that."

She stepped forward slowly, her voice gentle but firm.

"He told me something once," she said. "He said... eyes that only look at status will never see what truly matters. He told me to teach his son to see with his heart."

She turned toward me.

"And he did."

Mrs. Sterling sat back. Her arrogance had crumbled. Her face had gone pale.

"But..." she stammered. "You... you are blind."

"I cannot see the color of your walls or the cut of your clothes," my mother replied. "But I could see your husband’s pain. I could see his loneliness. I could see the goodness in his heart. And I can see yours, too."

May you like

She paused.

"It is never too late to learn to see, Mrs. Sterling."
