Chapter 5

We walked out together. Into the cool evening air.

My boyfriend’s car waited at the curb. But before we could reach it, we heard footsteps behind us.

"Wait! Please!"

Mrs. Sterling stood there, breathless, clutching a handkerchief.

She stopped before my mother. Her hands trembled.

"I have no excuse," she said, her voice breaking. "I was cruel. I was foolish. And I was wrong."

She held out the handkerchief.

"May I?" she asked, for the first time speaking with humility.

My mother nodded.

Slowly, carefully, Mrs. Sterling dabbed at the stains on my mother’s dress. Her movements were gentle, respectful.

"I have carried pride like armor," she whispered. "And today... you showed me it was only a cage."

She looked at me.

"Your words were harsh," she said. "But they were true. I cannot see. I have not seen anything clearly in years."

May you like

She stepped back.

"I do not expect forgiveness today. But I will ask... may I try to learn? May I try to see?"
