Chapter 8

Our wedding came a year later.

It was small. Quiet. Full of people who loved us.

Mrs. Sterling stood there. Not as the proud, wealthy matron. But as a woman who had learned her lesson.

When it came time to speak, she surprised everyone.

She stood up and took my hand, then my mother’s hand.

"I once threw wine in the face of the kindest woman I have ever known," she said clearly. "I judged her by her appearance. I judged her daughter by her station. And I was proven wrong in every possible way."

She looked at me.

"Your mother told me something," she said. "That eyes are for seeing the world. But the heart is for seeing truth. And I have been blind in the only way that truly matters."

She squeezed my hand.

"Welcome to our family. You have taught us all to see."
