Chapter 8: The Man My Mother Trusted

The man standing in my mother’s house looked like someone who belonged in the past.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not his clothes.

Not his face.

Not even the way he stood there calmly, as if breaking into an old family home was completely normal.

It was the familiarity.

The impossible feeling that I had seen him before.

Because I had.

Not recently.

Not in person.

But in photographs.

Old photographs.

Pictures my father had kept locked away.

Pictures I had never understood.

Derek moved slightly in front of me.

“Ethan, stay back.””

The man smiled.

“Still protective after all these years, Derek?””

Derek froze.

My heart started pounding.

“You know him.””

The man looked at Derek.

“I knew both of you.””

I tightened my grip on the flash drive.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

For a second, his expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

That wasn’t the answer I expected.

“I asked who you are.””

“My name is Michael Reeves.””

The name meant nothing.

But Derek reacted.

His face changed.

“No.””

Michael looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You’re dead.””

A strange silence filled the room.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Derek didn’t answer.

He just stared at Michael like he was looking at a ghost.

Michael slowly stepped forward.

“Your brother always was the one who remembered details.””

Derek’s voice was low.

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Seven years ago.””

“Yes.””

“The same week Mom died.””

Michael looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Someone explain.””

Derek looked at me.

“Michael worked with Mom.””

“Doing what?””

Michael answered.

“Finding the truth.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No,” he said.

“It doesn’t.””

He looked toward the old family photos hanging on the wall.

“Your mother spent years trying to expose people who were using a company to hide stolen money.””

My mind went back to my father’s words.

The company.

The evidence.

The secrets.

“Travis.””

Michael nodded.

“Trevor Hayes.””

I felt anger rise.

“So you knew him?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know he was near my son?””

Michael’s expression changed.

“No.””

“Did you know he had my house key?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know anything?””

Michael reached into his jacket.

Derek immediately reacted.

“Don’t.””

Michael stopped.

Slowly, he pulled out an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

I walked closer.

The photo showed my mother.

My father.

Michael.

And another man.

A younger version of Travis.

I stared.

“He was there.””

Michael nodded.

“Your mother discovered him working with people she was investigating.””

I looked at the photo.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because your father wanted you protected.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Protected?””

I pointed toward the door.

“My son was attacked today.””

Michael didn’t argue.

“I know.””

My eyes narrowed.

“How?””

Silence.

Then I realized.

“You knew before we told you.””

Michael looked away.

And that answer was enough.

“You’ve been watching us.””

“I’ve been protecting you.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You’ve been hiding.””

Michael accepted that.

“Maybe.””

Derek stepped forward.

“You let us believe you were dead.””

“I had to.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at him.

“Because the person who wanted your mother gone thought I was the next target.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because every person who knew the truth hesitated before saying it.

Finally, he said:

“Someone inside your family.””

My chest tightened.

“Again with this.””

Michael looked at me.

“Your mother discovered that someone close to her was selling information.””

“Who?””

He looked at the staircase.

At the place where we had found the box.

“Daniel.””

My father.

Again.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Michael studied me.

“You trust him.””

“He’s my father.””

“And that is exactly why this is difficult.””

Derek looked angry.

“You’re saying Dad betrayed Mom?””

“I’m saying your father made choices.””

“What choices?””

Michael reached into his pocket.

This time, he pulled out a small envelope.

“This.””

He handed it to me.

I opened it.

Inside was a document.

A bank transfer.

A large amount of money.

Sent seven years ago.

The recipient name was hidden.

But the sender was clear.

Daniel Carter.

My father.

I stared.

“No.””

Michael’s voice was quiet.

“Your father paid someone the night before your mother died.””

Derek took the paper.

His hands shook.

“This could be fake.””

“Yes.””

Michael nodded.

“It could.””

That answer surprised me.

“Then why show us?””

“Because your mother believed the same thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She didn’t know if Daniel was involved or being forced.””

The room went quiet.

Michael continued.

“She spent her final days trying to find out.””

My eyes moved to the box.

“The evidence.””

“Yes.””

“What’s on the flash drive?””

Michael looked at it.

“That is why they are afraid.””

“They?””

Michael nodded.

“Travis wasn’t acting alone.””

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

The hospital.

My heart dropped.

I answered.

“Hello?””

The nurse’s voice was rushed.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“You need to come back immediately.””

“What happened?””

“It’s your father.””

My grip tightened.

“What about him?””

A pause.

Then:

“He disappeared.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“The security cameras show him leaving his room five minutes ago.””

“That’s impossible. He was injured.””

“I know.””

My mind raced.

“Did he say where he was going?””

The nurse hesitated.

“He left a message.””

“What message?””

Her voice lowered.

“He said he had to fix what he started.””

I looked at Derek.

Then Michael.

“What else?””

Another pause.

“He said he was going to meet the person who ruined your family.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

The nurse answered:

“He wrote down one name.””

I closed my eyes.

“Whose?””

The answer came.

“Lena.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Derek.

Because suddenly, the person we thought was trapped in the middle…

might have been the person holding the missing piece.

Michael looked at me.

“You need to understand something.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He pointed at the flash drive.

“Whatever is on that drive…”

A pause.

“Your father will do anything to keep it hidden.””

I looked at the front door.

At the road beyond it.

At the world that had turned upside down in one afternoon.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A new message.

This time from Lena.

I opened it.

Only three words.

*I know everything.*

A second message appeared.

*Meet me alone.*

Then the final message arrived.

May you like

And it made my blood run cold.

*Before your father finds me.*
