Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Window
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what Noah had said.
The words were simple.
Four-year-old words.
But they carried a weight that made the room feel smaller.
*The man outside my window.*
I turned slowly toward the front door.
Nothing.
Just the empty porch.
The afternoon sunlight stretched across the driveway, peaceful and normal.
Too normal.
“Buddy,” I said carefully, kneeling down.
“What man?””
Noah grabbed my hand.
“The one with Travis.””
My stomach dropped.
Derek immediately stepped closer.
“Are you sure?””
Noah nodded.
“He was outside my room.””
Lena’s face went white.
“What?””
Everyone looked at her.
The officer noticed.
“Mrs. Carter, you seem surprised.””
She swallowed.
“I am.””
I stared at her.
“Are you?””
She looked at me.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
“It means I’m starting to wonder how much you really don’t know.””
Her expression cracked.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Act like I wanted any of this.””
I looked at Noah.
My son was still holding my hand.
The same hand he had reached for when he was scared.
“I don’t know what you wanted,” I said quietly.
“But I know what happened.””
The officer stepped between us.
“We need to focus on the child’s statement.””
He crouched down to Noah’s level.
“Hey, Noah. Can you tell me about the man?””
Noah looked nervous.
I squeezed his hand.
“You’re safe.””
He nodded.
“He came at night.””
“When?””
“Two sleeps ago.””
The officer glanced at me.
“Two nights ago?””
I nodded.
Noah continued.
“He stood by the window.””
“Did he come inside?””
“No.””
“Did he talk to you?””
Noah shook his head.
“He just looked.””
A chill moved through me.
“Did you tell your mom?””
Noah looked at Lena.
Then away.
That tiny hesitation said everything.
The officer noticed too.
“Why didn’t you tell your mom?””
Noah whispered:
“Because she said not to make problems.””
Lena immediately stepped forward.
“I never said that.””
Noah flinched.
It was barely noticeable.
But I saw it.
Derek saw it.
The officer saw it.
And Lena saw that we all saw it.
Her face changed.
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
No one answered.
The room became painfully quiet.
The officer stood.
“Mr. Carter, I need you to take Noah somewhere safe for the night.””
“I will.””
“I also need to ask Mrs. Carter some questions.””
Lena looked alarmed.
“Am I being accused of something?””
The officer didn’t answer directly.
“I’m asking questions.””
She looked at me.
“Are you really going to let this happen?””
I stared at her.
“My son called me begging for help.””
Her eyes filled.
“I’m his mother.””
“And I’m his father.””
The words came out harder than I expected.
“And right now, he needs someone who listens when he says he’s scared.””
Lena looked away.
Derek walked toward me.
“Come on.””
I picked up Noah.
He immediately wrapped his arms around my neck.
Like he was afraid I would disappear.
Outside, the air felt colder.
Derek followed me to my truck.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“You believe Dad?””
I opened the passenger door and placed Noah inside.
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””
Derek leaned against the truck.
“But you believe Travis is connected to Mom?””
I looked at him.
“Our mother died seven years ago.””
“I know.””
“Travis couldn’t have known her.””
Derek looked uncomfortable.
“Unless Dad knows something we don’t.””
I closed the door.
“Why didn’t he ever tell us?””
Derek looked toward the house.
“Maybe he was trying to protect us.””
“By hiding the truth?””
“Maybe.””
I shook my head.
“No. Secrets don’t protect people.””
I looked at my son through the window.
“They hurt them.””
Derek was quiet.
Then his phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Derek?””
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a message.
From an unknown number.
A photo was attached.
My blood froze.
The picture showed my house.
Taken from across the street.
The angle was low.
Hidden.
Then I saw the timestamp.
Last night.
2:17 AM.
Derek looked at me.
“This was sent thirty seconds ago.””
I stared at the image.
Someone had been watching my house.
Watching Noah.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, from the same number.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*You should have stayed away from the past.*
My hands tightened.
Derek looked at me.
“Do you know who sent it?””
“No.””
But deep down…
I knew.
Because there was only one person who benefited from us being afraid.
I called the number.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
No voice.
Just breathing.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
I stepped away from the truck.
“Where is Travis?””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
Not nervous.
Not scared.
Confident.
Then the person spoke.
“You still think this is about Travis?””
My blood ran cold.
“Who are you?””
Another laugh.
“You really don’t remember.””
The call crackled.
Then the voice said:
“Your mother did.””
The line went dead.
I stood frozen.
Derek grabbed my shoulder.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
“He said my mother knew him.””
Derek’s expression darkened.
“What exactly did he say?””
I repeated the words.
Your mother did.
For several seconds, Derek didn’t speak.
Then he whispered:
“There’s something I never told you.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Before Mom died…”
A pause.
“She gave me something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A box.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What box?””
“She told me never to open it unless someone from her past came looking for our family.””
I stared at him.
“Where is it?””
Derek looked toward the road.
“Hidden.””
“Where?””
His eyes met mine.
“At Dad’s house.””
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
Because suddenly, my father’s attack didn’t feel random.
It felt like the first move.
“Derek.””
He looked at me.
“We need to get that box.””
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
The hospital.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
The nurse’s voice came through.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“We need you to come back to the hospital.””
My heart tightened.
“Is my father okay?””
A pause.
“He’s awake.””
“Good.””
“But there’s a problem.””
“What problem?””
Her voice lowered.
“Your father is refusing to speak to the police.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“Because he says if he tells them the truth…”
I felt a chill.
“What?””
The nurse took a breath.
“He says someone will come after Noah next.””
I looked at my son sitting safely inside the truck.
Then I heard the nurse say:
“And Mr. Carter…”
“Yes?””
“He keeps asking for you.””
“Why?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because he says he knows who attacked Noah.””
I froze.
“Who?””
The nurse hesitated.
Then answered:
“He says it was not Travis.””
May you like
A long silence.
“He says Travis was working for someone else.””
