Chapter 2: The House Full of Secrets

I stared at Lena’s message until the words blurred.

*Don’t trust Derek. He knows everything.*

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

My first instinct was anger.

Not the loud kind.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that sits quietly in your chest and waits.

Because the woman who was supposed to protect our son had just sent me a warning about the one person who had actually shown up.

Derek.

The man holding Noah when I walked through the door.

The man who had left work, driven across town, and gotten my son away from danger before I could even reach the neighborhood.

I looked at him.

He was standing near the kitchen counter, arms crossed, watching me carefully.

He knew something was wrong.

“Who was that?”” he asked.

I locked my phone.

“Lena.””

His expression changed slightly.

“What did she say?””

I didn’t answer.

Not because I trusted him less.

Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

The officer cleared his throat.

“Mr. Carter, we need to talk about what happened here.””

I nodded, but my eyes stayed on Noah.

My son was still wrapped in Derek’s jacket.

He looked smaller than he ever had before.

Four years old.

Four years old and already learning how to hide pain from adults.

The thought made my stomach twist.

I walked over and knelt in front of him.

“Noah, buddy.””

He looked at me.

“Did Travis really hit you with a bat?””

His eyes moved toward Derek.

Then toward the officer.

Then back to me.

“He said I wasn’t supposed to tell.””

I felt my hands clench.

“Who said that?””

“Travis.””

His voice became quieter.

“He said Mom would leave if I told.””

My heart sank.

I looked at the officer.

“Can you give us a minute?””

The officer nodded.

“Take your time.””

He stepped away.

I touched Noah’s hair.

“Listen to me. You can always tell Daddy the truth.””

He nodded.

“Even if someone tells you not to?””

“Yes.””

“Even if they say they’ll be angry?””

“Yes.””

“Even if they say nobody will believe you?””

I swallowed.

“Yes, Noah.””

He stared at me.

Then he whispered something that made the entire room go silent.

“Mom said that too.””

I froze.

“What?””

Noah looked down at his fingers.

“Mom said grown-ups don’t believe kids.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

I looked at Derek.

His face had gone pale.

“What?”” I asked.

He slowly shook his head.

“I heard something earlier.””

“What?””

“When I got here.””

He walked closer.

“Travis wasn’t alone.””

My heart dropped.

“What do you mean?””

Derek glanced at Noah.

“Not physically.””

The words came slowly.

“He was on the phone.””

“With who?””

Derek looked at the message still glowing on my screen.

“I think you already know.””

I looked down.

Lena.

My ex-wife.

Noah’s mother.

The person who had spent years telling me I worried too much.

The person who said Travis was “a good guy.””

The person who insisted Noah loved him.

Suddenly, every strange moment from the past few months came rushing back.

Noah becoming quiet whenever I picked him up.

The way he stopped talking about weekends at his mother’s house.

The way he started asking if I was going to leave too.

I had noticed.

I just hadn’t wanted to believe it.

Because believing it meant admitting I had trusted the wrong person.

The officer approached again.

“Mr. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“We need to document everything.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Your brother mentioned finding something.””

My eyes moved to the envelope.

The officer carefully picked it up.

“Where exactly was this?””

“Behind my dresser,” Derek said.

The officer opened the envelope.

Inside was the photograph and the note.

He studied it.

“Do you recognize this person?””

I looked at the picture again.

Travis.

Standing in my bedroom.

Holding my spare key.

The photo wasn’t old.

It looked recent.

Very recent.

“I recognize him.””

“Have you ever given him access to your home?””

“No.””

“Could he have gotten the key from someone else?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

There was only one person who could have given him that key.

Lena.

The officer looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Was Travis ever supposed to be around your son alone?””

My jaw tightened.

“No.””

“Did you ever give permission for that?””

“No.””

The officer nodded.

“Then we need to find out why he was here.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman’s voice filled the house.

“What is going on?””

Lena.

She stood in the doorway wearing sunglasses and a beige coat.

Like she was walking into a business meeting.

Not a home where her son had just been hurt.

Her eyes moved across the room.

First to the officer.

Then to Derek.

Then to me.

Finally to Noah.

Her expression changed.

“Oh my God.””

She rushed forward.

“My baby.””

I stepped between them.

“Stop.””

She froze.

Her face hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“You don’t get to walk in here and pretend everything is fine.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

I held up the photo.

Her face changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

She recognized it.

“You know about this.””

Silence.

Then she shook her head.

“I don’t know what you think you found—”

“Why did Travis have my house key?””

Her mouth opened.

No answer came.

Derek stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Lena looked at him.

“Stay out of this.””

That sentence hit me harder than anything else.

Not because she said it.

Because of how quickly she said it.

Like Derek was the problem.

Not Travis.

Not what happened to Noah.

Not the evidence in my hand.

“You’re defending him?”” I asked.

She looked away.

“I’m trying to understand what happened.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You’re trying to control what happens next.””

The officer stepped between us.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

But Lena wasn’t looking at him.

She was looking at Noah.

“Sweetheart, tell Daddy what happened.””

Noah immediately grabbed my hand.

A small movement.

But I felt it.

He was afraid.

Not of the officer.

Not of Derek.

Of her.

I saw it.

And Lena saw that I saw it.

Her expression changed.

“Why are you looking at me like that?””

I stared at her.

“Because my son is scared of you.””

Her face went cold.

“That is ridiculous.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It isn’t.””

The officer took a step closer.

“Mrs. Carter, where is Travis right now?””

She hesitated.

Too long.

“I don’t know.””

Derek laughed once.

A humorless sound.

“You always were a terrible liar.””

Lena looked at him.

“You think you know everything.””

Derek’s expression hardened.

“No.””

He pointed toward the hallway.

“But I know what I found.””

Lena went still.

“What did you find?””

Derek didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

Then at Noah.

Then back at Lena.

“A recording.””

My stomach dropped.

“What recording?””

Derek reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small device.

A voice recorder.

“I found this hidden under the bed in Noah’s room.””

Lena’s face lost color.

The officer immediately stepped forward.

“Where did you find that?””

“Under the bed frame.””

The room became silent.

Derek pressed a button.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

Travis.

“You keep telling him to stop crying, but he still acts weak.””

My blood ran cold.

Then Lena’s voice.

Quiet.

Almost impossible to hear.

“He’s just a kid.””

Travis laughed.

“He’s your problem too.””

The recording continued.

Then came a sentence that made my entire body freeze.

Lena’s voice.

Clearer this time.

“He can’t tell his father.””

I looked at her.

She looked at me.

And for the first time since she walked through the door…

she looked afraid.

The officer stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Then Derek’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him answer.

“Hello?””

A pause.

Then his eyes lifted toward me.

“Wait… say that again.””

My heart started racing.

“What is it?””

Derek slowly lowered the phone.

“The hospital.””

I stepped forward.

“What hospital?””

He looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“Travis wasn’t running away.””

A long pause.

“He was looking for something.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

Derek swallowed.

“He went to the hospital.””

“Why?””

Derek looked down at his phone.

May you like

And the next words made my blood turn cold.

“Because someone else was hurt before Noah.””
