Chapter 3: The Secret Before Noah
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Derek’s words hung in the air.
*Someone else was hurt before Noah.*
I stared at him, waiting for him to explain.
Waiting for him to tell me I misunderstood.
But he didn’t.
He just looked at me with the same expression he had worn when he first walked into my house.
The expression of someone who had discovered something much worse than he expected.
“Who?”” I asked.
My voice barely came out.
Derek looked at the officer.
“Can I put this on speaker?””
The officer nodded.
Derek lifted the phone.
“Tell him what you told me.””
A woman’s voice came through.
“I’m Nurse Angela at Westbrook Medical Center.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why are you calling my brother?””
There was a pause.
Then she answered carefully.
“Because the person who brought in the patient gave us your name as an emergency contact.””
I frowned.
“My name?””
“Yes.””
“Who is the patient?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Mr. Daniel Carter.””
My blood went cold.
I almost dropped my phone.
“That’s my father.””
Nobody spoke.
Not even Lena.
My father.
A man who lived forty minutes away.
A man who had barely spoken to me since my divorce.
A man who had never even met Travis.
“What happened to him?”” I asked.
The nurse’s voice softened.
“He was found unconscious outside his home this afternoon.””
I looked at Derek.
His face was hard.
“What does this have to do with Travis?””
The nurse answered.
“Mr. Carter was found with a note in his pocket.””
My throat tightened.
“What note?””
The room became silent.
Even Noah looked up.
The nurse said:
“It had your son’s name written on it.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No, that doesn’t make sense.””
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“Your brother told us you needed to know.””
I grabbed the nearest chair.
My legs suddenly felt weak.
Derek stepped toward me.
“Sit down.””
I ignored him.
“Is my father awake?””
“Yes.””
“Can I talk to him?””
“He’s being evaluated right now.””
“Put him on the phone.””
“Mr. Carter—”
“Please.””
My voice broke.
“Please.””
The nurse went quiet.
Then she said:
“I’ll see what I can do.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Lena finally whispered:
“What does this mean?””
I turned toward her.
“You tell me.””
Her face changed.
“I don’t know anything.””
“You knew Travis had my key.””
“I didn’t.””
“You knew he was around Noah.””
“I trusted him.””
I laughed once.
It wasn’t because anything was funny.
It was because I couldn’t believe those words were coming out of her mouth.
“You trusted him?””
Lena looked hurt.
“You think I wanted this?””
I stepped closer.
“My son called me crying because your boyfriend hit him.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.””
“You didn’t know?””
“No.””
“Then explain why he said you knew.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence told me more than any answer could.
The officer looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter, you need to be honest.””
She looked away.
“I was afraid.””
Those four words changed the room.
Derek crossed his arms.
“Afraid of what?””
Lena wiped her face.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” I said.
“I don’t.””
She looked at me.
“Travis wasn’t always like this.””
I felt my anger rise.
“That is what everyone says after someone gets hurt.””
She shook her head.
“He changed.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“When did he change, Lena?””
Her voice dropped.
“After he found out about the money.””
I froze.
“What money?””
She looked toward Noah.
Then lowered her voice.
“The insurance.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What insurance?””
She swallowed.
“Your father’s.””
The room became completely still.
I looked at Derek.
He looked back at me.
Neither of us understood.
“My father has life insurance?””
“Yes.””
“And Travis knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“He found paperwork.””
My stomach turned.
“Why would he care about my father’s insurance?””
Lena’s eyes moved toward the envelope on the table.
Toward the photo.
Toward the note.
And suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t random.
Travis wasn’t just a man who lost control.
He had a reason.
A plan.
“What did he want?”” I asked.
Lena’s lips trembled.
“He wanted access.””
“To what?””
She whispered:
“Your family.””
The words felt impossible.
But then every strange moment started connecting.
Travis showing up too quickly.
Travis knowing things about my home.
Travis having my spare key.
Travis spending time alone with Noah.
He wasn’t just dating Lena.
He was moving closer.
Closer to everything connected to me.
My family.
My father.
My son.
The officer looked at Lena.
“Mrs. Carter, did you ever report concerns about Mr. Travis?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because he told me if I did, he would make sure I never saw Noah again.””
My hands curled into fists.
“He threatened you?””
She nodded.
“And you still left Noah with him?””
The question came from me.
Not the officer.
Not Derek.
Me.
Lena looked at the floor.
“I thought I could handle it.””
My voice became quiet.
“You thought?””
A tear rolled down her face.
“I was wrong.””
Noah suddenly spoke.
“Mom?””
Everyone turned.
He was looking at Lena.
She immediately softened.
“Oh, baby.””
She stepped forward.
But Noah moved closer to me.
A small movement.
A heartbreaking movement.
Lena stopped.
The pain on her face was real.
But right now, real pain wasn’t enough.
My son needed safety.
Not apologies.
The officer walked toward the front door.
“I’m going to arrange protection for Noah while we investigate.””
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I stared at it.
Everyone watched.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
Weak.
Tired.
But familiar.
“Son?””
My chest tightened.
“Dad?””
A breath.
Then:
“Listen to me carefully.””
I gripped the phone.
“Are you okay?””
“No time.””
His voice shook.
“You need to get Noah away from them.””
I looked at Lena.
“Dad, what are you talking about?””
“I saw something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then my father whispered:
“Travis wasn’t after my insurance.””
I frowned.
“Then what was he after?””
My father took a shaky breath.
And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“He was after something your mother left behind.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
My mother had been dead for seven years.
She had no connection to Travis.
No reason to matter.
But my father continued.
“The night before she died, she told me if anything happened to her…”
His voice cracked.
“Never let anyone named Travis get close to our family.””
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
I looked at Derek.
He had heard every word.
Then my father said something even worse.
“Your mother knew him.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“Dad…”
“Your mother knew exactly who Travis was.””
A silence.
Then his final words came through the phone.
“Son… Travis isn’t new to our family.””
I stopped breathing.
“Because he was already here.””
The call suddenly ended.
And from the hallway behind us…
Noah whispered:
“Daddy?””
I turned.
My son was staring at the front door.
His little face had gone pale.
“What is it, buddy?””
May you like
He pointed.
“Is that the man who was outside my window last night?””
