Chapter 9: The Truth About My Father
I opened my father's letter alone.
Noah was sleeping.
Maya was still in the hospital.
Claire was somewhere under police supervision.
And I was sitting in a fluorescent room at four in the morning, staring at handwriting I hadn't seen since I was twelve.
*Daniel,*
*If you have this letter, then I failed to come home.*
I stopped reading.
My hands shook.
My father had never written me a letter.
At least, not one I knew about.
*I didn't leave because I wanted to.*
*I left because someone I trusted betrayed me.*
The next line made my stomach twist.
*That person was Claire's father.*
I read faster.
My father had discovered that money was being stolen from his company.
He traced the transactions to a network of shell companies.
Claire's father was behind it.
But he wasn't working alone.
There was another person.
A woman.
My father's letter didn't name her.
Instead, he wrote:
*She is someone you already know.*
I stared at that sentence.
Someone I already knew.
My mind immediately went to Claire.
But Claire had been a child when my father disappeared.
Then I remembered something.
My mother.
No.
I couldn't believe it.
I read on.
*Your mother knows more than she has ever told you. She believes she protected you. Maybe she did. But she also made a deal.*
A deal.
With whom?
The final page answered it.
*She agreed to hide Noah's identity in exchange for your safety.*
I sat back.
My father hadn't abandoned us.
He had been forced to disappear.
My mother had known he was alive.
And she'd spent years telling me he'd died.
I felt betrayed by ghosts.
The detective returned.
“You okay?””
“No.””
He sat down.
“What did it say?””
I handed him the letter.
He read it.
His expression changed.
“Mr. Carter…”
“What?””
“This could reopen the entire investigation into your father's disappearance.””
“Can you find him?””
“We don't know if he's alive.””
“But this letter says—”
“It was written years ago.””
“How many?””
He checked the paper.
“Eleven.””
Eleven years.
The same year Noah was born.
My heart pounded.
My father had written the letter when Noah was born.
Why?
I called Mark.
He answered immediately.
“Daniel?””
“Where are you?””
“Home.””
“I found another letter.””
“From who?””
“My father.””
Silence.
Then Mark said,
“What does it say?””
“He knew about Noah.””
Mark exhaled.
“Of course he did.””
“What do you mean?””
“I thought you knew.””
“Knew what?””
“Your father came to my mother before he disappeared.””
I sat upright.
“When?””
“Right before he left.””
“What did he say?””
“He said Claire's father was going to kill him.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“He had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Claire's father had been using your family's company to move stolen money.””
“That's all?””
“No.””
“What else?””
“He said your mother was involved.””
My chest tightened.
“Mark.””
“She wasn't helping them steal. She was covering it up.””
“Why?””
“Because your father threatened to expose everyone.””
I stood.
“And Claire?””
“She knew.””
“She was a teenager.””
“She knew enough.””
I thought about Claire's confession.
She had targeted me.
She had married me because of money.
But maybe that wasn't the entire story.
Maybe she'd been trying to protect something.
Or someone.
“Where is Claire?””
“I don't know.””
“Find out.””
“Why?””
“Because she may know where my father is.””
Mark went quiet.
Then he said,
“Daniel, there is something I've never told you.””
“What?””
“Claire didn't invent the story about Noah.””
“What story?””
“That he was in danger.””
I frowned.
“Then who was threatening him?””
“Your father.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
“He wanted Noah.””
“Why?””
“Because Noah was his grandson.””
I shook my head.
“No. My father wasn't Noah's father.””
“I didn't say that.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Mark's voice dropped.
“Noah is your son.””
“I know.””
“But your father believed Noah was the key to finding the missing money.””
“What missing money?””
“The money your father stole.””
I stared at the wall.
“Wait.””
My father's letter said he had been investigating stolen money.
But Mark was saying my father had stolen money.
“Who stole it?””
“Your father.””
The room spun.
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because my mother told me.””
“Your mother?””
“She said your father took the money before he disappeared.””
I looked at the letter.
None of it made sense.
Unless…
Unless the money had never been stolen.
Unless my father had hidden it.
I read the final paragraph again.
*The money was never gone.*
My heart stopped.
*I hid it where nobody would think to look.*
I whispered,
“Where?””
The letter continued.
*Inside the family.*
I stared at the words.
Then my eyes moved to the date.
Eleven years ago.
The year Noah was born.
The year my father vanished.
The year Claire had secretly given birth.
I suddenly understood.
“Noah.””
Mark said,
“What?””
“The money.””
“What about it?””
“My father said he hid it inside the family.””
Mark went silent.
I looked at the paternity test.
Then at the photograph of Claire holding Noah.
Something clicked.
“That's why they wanted him.””
“Daniel?””
“They weren't protecting Noah.””
“What are you talking about?””
“They were looking for something connected to him.””
I grabbed my coat.
“I know where to look.””
“Where?””
I looked toward the hospital.
“Maya's backpack.””
I rushed back.
Maya was awake when I entered.
She looked at me.
“Dad?””
“I need to ask you something.””
She nodded.
“Did Uncle Mark ever give you anything besides the phone?””
She thought.
Then shook her head.
“No.””
“Did Grandma?””
Another shake.
“Did Mommy?””
Maya's eyes moved to the red backpack.
She reached inside.
Pulled out the stuffed rabbit.
She squeezed it.
Then frowned.
“There's something inside.””
I took it.
The rabbit had a seam along its belly.
I carefully opened it.
A tiny metal key fell into my palm.
Maya stared.
“I've never seen that.””
I looked at the key.
A number was engraved on it.
*117*
My phone rang.
It was the detective.
“Mr. Carter, we found something.””
“What?””
“Your wife's car.””
“Where?””
“Abandoned outside a private storage facility.””
My pulse quickened.
“Which one?””
He gave me the address.
I knew it.
The same facility.
But not Unit 314.
Another building.
Unit 117.
I looked at the key in my hand.
And suddenly my father's letter made sense.
He hadn't hidden the money inside a person.
He'd hidden the key inside the one thing everyone ignored.
His child.
My son.
I stood.
“I'm going there.””
The detective's voice sharpened.
“Wait for us.””
But before I could answer, I heard a crash outside Maya's room.
Then screaming.
I ran into the hallway.
A nurse was on the floor.
The lights flickered.
And Claire was standing beside Maya's bed.
She grabbed our daughter's hand.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
Her eyes were wild.
“We have to go.””
“Why?””
She looked toward the window.
“He found us.””
“Who?””
May you like
Claire pulled Maya close.
“Your father.””
