Chapter 7: What My Mother Knew
I didn't tell Claire about the messages.
I didn't tell Mark either.
I simply left the hospital.
But I didn't go alone.
I called a friend from the police department—not because I knew whether I was ready to involve the police, but because an eleven-year-old boy was missing.
I gave him the address.
Then I drove to Claire's mother's old house.
The place looked exactly as I remembered.
White siding.
Green shutters.
A dead rosebush beside the porch.
The front door still had the brass knocker shaped like a lion.
I parked across the street.
My phone buzzed.
*COME INSIDE.*
I looked at the house.
Every instinct told me not to.
I opened the envelope Mark had given me.
Inside was a single photograph.
My mother.
Claire's mother.
And a baby.
On the back:
*WE MADE A PROMISE. CLAIRE BROKE IT.*
I turned the photograph over.
Something fell out.
A tiny hospital bracelet.
*BABY CARTER*
I stared at the name.
Carter.
My last name.
Not Cole.
Carter.
I suddenly understood why Claire's mother had left everything to me.
Why my mother had been involved.
Why Claire had targeted me.
Noah might not be Evan's son.
He might be mine.
The thought was so enormous that my mind refused to accept it.
I walked toward the house.
The front door was unlocked.
“Hello?””
Nothing.
I stepped inside.
The air smelled like dust and old wood.
“Hello?””
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
I looked up.
Then I heard a child's voice.
“Dad?””
My heart stopped.
“Noah?””
Silence.
I climbed the stairs.
At the end of the hallway was a closed door.
I opened it.
An empty bedroom.
A mattress on the floor.
A blanket.
A stack of books.
And on the wall, dozens of photographs.
I stepped closer.
They were pictures of me.
Me at my wedding.
Me holding Maya as a baby.
Me at work.
Me walking into my house.
Me asleep in my own bed.
My stomach turned.
Someone had been watching me for years.
A voice came from behind me.
“You weren't supposed to see those.””
I spun around.
Noah stood in the doorway.
He was smaller than I expected.
Skinny.
Pale.
His green eyes were exactly like the photograph.
He looked terrified.
I lowered my hands.
“It's okay.””
He took a step backward.
“Are you my dad?””
I couldn't answer.
Not honestly.
Not yet.
“I might be.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Mommy said you weren't.””
“She lied about a lot of things.””
Noah stared at me.
“Did you come to take me away?””
“I came to find you.””
“Why?””
“Because you're missing.””
He looked down.
“I wasn't missing.””
“What happened?””
“Mommy told me to hide.””
“From who?””
“Evan.””
I crouched.
“Where is Evan?””
Noah shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“Did he hurt you?””
“No.””
“Did Claire?””
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
I swallowed.
“Why were you living here?””
“Mommy said it was temporary.””
“How long?””
“Three years.””
Three years.
A child.
Hidden for three years.
I looked at the photographs.
“Who took these?””
Noah pointed at a small camera on the shelf.
“Mommy.””
“Why?””
“She wanted proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That you were a good father.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“She said if something happened, everyone needed to know you were good.””
A sound came from downstairs.
Noah grabbed my hand.
“She's here.””
I froze.
“Claire?””
He nodded.
“She's angry.””
“Stay behind me.””
We heard the front door slam.
Then Claire's voice.
“Daniel?””
Noah squeezed my hand.
I whispered,
“Don't move.””
Claire called again.
“Daniel, please. We need to talk.””
I stepped into the hallway.
“I'm here.””
Claire appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
She saw Noah.
Her face broke.
“Oh, Noah.””
He stepped backward.
“Don't.””
Claire stopped.
“I've been looking everywhere for you.””
“You locked me here,” he said.
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
His voice trembled.
“You were hiding me.””
Claire looked at me.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
She climbed one step.
“I was trying to protect both of you.””
“From Evan?””
“Yes.””
“From Mark?””
“No.””
“From my mother?””
Claire's eyes widened.
“No.””
“Then from whom?””
She looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“From your father.””
I frowned.
“My father died when I was twelve.””
Claire shook her head.
“That's what you were told.””
I couldn't breathe.
“What?””
“Your father didn't die.””
I laughed in disbelief.
“Claire, stop.””
“He disappeared.””
“Why?””
“Because your mother made sure he did.””
I stared at her.
She continued.
“Your father was involved in financial crimes. Your mother discovered it. She threatened to expose him.””
“And?””
“He threatened her.””
“What happened?””
“He disappeared.””
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you telling me this?””
“Because Noah's birth certificate has his name on it.””
I looked at Noah.
He was staring at the floor.
“What does my father have to do with him?””
Claire's voice broke.
“Everything.””
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out a document.
And handed it to me.
I unfolded it.
At the top:
*PATERNITY TEST*
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
*Probability of paternity: 99.98%.*
I looked at Noah.
Then Claire.
“This is mine.””
She nodded.
“Noah is your biological son.””
The room disappeared.
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.
Then Noah whispered,
“I knew.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Mommy told me.””
“When?””
“Last Christmas.””
My knees nearly buckled.
I sat on the stairs.
Noah approached slowly.
“Are you mad?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Are you going to leave?””
The question broke me.
I held out my hand.
He hesitated.
Then took it.
“No.””
His fingers were freezing.
“I've already lost too many years.””
Claire began crying.
I looked at her.
“You knew he was mine.””
“Yes.””
“You knew before we married.””
“Yes.””
“You knew for eleven years.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
She whispered,
“Because if you knew about Noah, you would have asked questions about how he was born.””
“What happened?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“I wasn't supposed to have him.””
“What does that mean?””
She wiped her face.
“Your mother and mine arranged everything.””
“Everything?””
“They knew your father had disappeared. They knew you would inherit his assets someday. They wanted Noah protected.””
“From whom?””
Claire looked at me.
“From the people who wanted your father's money.””
I stared at the paternity test.
“And you married me because of that money.””
“At first.””
“At first?””
She didn't answer.
I heard sirens outside.
Claire's face went pale.
The police had arrived.
She looked at me.
“Daniel, if you tell them everything, they'll take Noah.””
“Why?””
“Because his legal identity was changed.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Claire stepped closer.
“On paper, Noah doesn't exist.””
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?””
“He was registered under another name.””
“Whose?””
Claire whispered,
“Evan Cole.””
I looked at Noah.
Then at Claire.
“Why?””
Before she could answer, the front door burst open.
A police officer shouted,
“Daniel Carter! Step away from the child!””
Noah screamed.
And from outside came another voice.
A man's voice.
“Don't let him touch my son.””
I turned.
May you like
Evan Cole stood on the porch.
And he was holding a gun.
