Chapter 8: The Man Who Wanted My Son
Everything happened at once.
The officer drew his weapon.
“Drop it!””
Evan didn't move.
Noah clung to me.
Claire screamed,
“Evan, don't!””
Evan's eyes stayed fixed on Noah.
“Come here, buddy.””
Noah shook his head.
“I'm not going.””
Evan's jaw tightened.
“He belongs with me.””
I stepped in front of Noah.
“He's my son.””
Evan laughed.
“You don't even know him.””
“No.””
I tightened my grip on Noah's hand.
“But I know what you've done.””
Evan's eyes flicked toward Claire.
“You told him?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Then you should have.””
The officer moved closer.
“Sir, put the weapon down.””
Evan looked at him.
“You don't understand.””
“Put it down.””
“He stole my family.””
The officer glanced at me.
“Mr. Carter, take the boy upstairs.””
I started moving.
Evan raised the gun.
“No!””
Noah screamed.
I froze.
Claire stepped forward.
“Evan, look at me.””
He did.
“You said you wouldn't hurt him.””
“I won't.””
“You're holding a gun.””
“Because he has everything I lost.””
Claire's face hardened.
“You lost it because of what you did.””
Evan laughed.
“You still blame me?””
“Yes.””
“For Noah?””
“For everything.””
The officer took another step.
“Put the gun down.””
Evan's hand trembled.
Then Noah spoke.
“You're not my dad.””
Everyone went silent.
Evan stared at him.
“What?””
Noah's voice shook.
“My dad is Daniel.””
Evan's expression changed.
He looked at me.
Then back at Noah.
“You don't know what you're saying.””
“Yes, I do.””
“Your mother poisoned your mind.””
“No.””
Noah stepped closer to me.
“Mommy told me you were my father.””
Evan's face twisted.
“Claire?””
She shook her head.
“I never told him that.””
“You told him everything else.””
“I was trying to protect him.””
“By hiding him?””
“Yes.””
“From me?””
“From everyone.””
Evan suddenly looked exhausted.
The gun lowered slightly.
The officer moved.
“Put it down.””
Evan dropped the gun.
The officer kicked it away and arrested him.
Noah began crying.
I pulled him into my arms.
He buried his face against me.
“I've got you.””
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“Are you really my dad?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
His arms tightened.
“I wanted you to find me.””
I held him for a long time.
Then I heard Claire say,
“Daniel.””
I turned.
She was being questioned by another officer.
“Don't let them take Maya.””
I stared at her.
“You're worried about Maya?””
“She's your daughter.””
“So is Noah.””
“Yes.””
“And you hid them both.””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I was protecting them.””
“You don't get to decide that anymore.””
The officer approached me.
“Mr. Carter, we need to ask you some questions.””
“About Claire?””
“About everyone.””
I looked at Noah.
He was still holding my hand.
“Can I stay with him?””
“For now.””
We spent the next three hours at the station.
The story came out piece by piece.
Claire had met me twelve years earlier.
She knew who I was because her mother and mine had been connected through a business trust.
My father had disappeared years before after allegedly stealing money from investors.
My mother had spent years trying to recover the money.
Then she'd discovered something nobody knew.
My father had secretly fathered a child before disappearing.
Noah.
Claire's mother had helped hide the child.
But there was another secret.
Evan wasn't Noah's biological father.
He had only been listed that way after Claire needed someone to provide a legal identity.
Evan had discovered the truth six months earlier.
He began blackmailing Claire.
He wanted money.
Claire refused.
Then he threatened to expose Noah.
Claire panicked.
She hid Noah.
And then, when Maya accidentally discovered him, Claire began controlling her.
The medication was supposed to keep Maya asleep while Claire moved Noah between hiding places.
The phone had captured everything.
But there was still one mystery.
Why had Claire been so desperate to hide the inheritance?
I found out at 3:17 a.m.
A detective placed a folder in front of me.
“Your mother left this with her attorney.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My mother's handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then the truth about Noah has finally come out.*
I stopped.
The detective sat across from me.
I continued.
*Your father did not abandon us.*
My breath caught.
*He disappeared because he was investigating the same people who stole money from his company. He believed someone inside our family was helping them.*
I looked at the detective.
“Who?””
He pointed to the next page.
There was one name.
*Claire's father.*
My heart pounded.
I kept reading.
*Your father discovered that Claire's family had been moving money through shell companies. He confronted them. Then he disappeared.*
The room seemed to spin.
Claire's father had been dead for fifteen years.
But my mother had known.
And she had left me another instruction.
*Never trust Claire until she tells you what happened the night your father disappeared.*
I looked up.
“Where is Claire?””
The detective hesitated.
“She was released pending further investigation.””
“Why?””
“Because most of the evidence concerns financial crimes and child custody. We're still building the case.””
I stood.
“I need to speak to her.””
The detective shook his head.
“Not tonight.””
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice said,
“You've been looking in the wrong place.””
“Who is this?””
“You think Claire ruined your life.””
“Who are you?””
“I knew your father.””
My blood ran cold.
“Where is he?””
The man laughed softly.
“That's the question, isn't it?””
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me.””
“You have his son.””
I looked at Noah, sleeping in a chair nearby.
“What do you want?””
“I want you to open the final envelope.””
“What envelope?””
“The one Claire never found.””
The call ended.
I looked at the detective.
“Did my mother leave another envelope?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Then Noah stirred.
He opened his eyes.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
He pointed toward my jacket.
“What's that?””
I reached into the inside pocket.
My fingers touched paper.
I pulled out a small sealed envelope.
My name was written on it.
But the handwriting wasn't my mother's.
It was my father's.
May you like
And beneath my name were five words:
*I'M SORRY I LEFT YOU.*
