Chapter 9: The Sister Who Knew the Truth

I stood frozen with the phone against my ear.

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what Karen had said.

Not because the words were unclear.

Because they were impossible.

*She was never your sister.*

*She was there the night your parents died.*

My mind refused to connect the pieces.

Sophia.

My sister.

The girl I grew up beside.

The girl whose birthday parties I decorated.

The girl whose homework I helped finish.

The girl I defended when other children called her spoiled.

The girl I had spent twenty years trying to love.

My hands began to shake.

“What are you saying?””

Karen’s breathing was uneven.

“Emma, you need to understand—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, you don’t get to say that and then explain slowly.””

I walked away from everyone in the room.

I needed distance.

I needed to hear this without seeing their faces.

“What does ‘never my sister’ mean?””

Karen was silent.

Then she whispered:

“Sophia was adopted too.””

I stopped.

The world seemed to go quiet.

“What?””

“She wasn’t your parents’ biological child.””

My chest tightened.

“Then whose child was she?””

Karen hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

“Karen.””

“I don’t know.””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You don’t know?””

“I know what I was told.””

“By who?””

Silence.

“By Michael.””

My stomach dropped.

Of course.

Michael.

Every secret led back to him.

Every lie had his shadow behind it.

“What did he tell you?””

Karen took a shaky breath.

“He said Sophia was placed with us because she needed a home.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was young.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You were desperate.””

She didn’t deny it.

“You wanted the money.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

After all these years, the truth sounded stranger than the lies.

Karen continued.

“I was told that if I raised both children and kept you hidden, Sophia would be protected.””

I frowned.

“Protected from what?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because Michael never told me everything.””

I looked through the window.

The city lights blurred.

“So you raised two girls.””

“Yes.””

“One of them was the child connected to the trust.””

“Yes.””

“And the other?””

Karen’s voice dropped.

“The other was the reason Michael needed access to your family.””

My heart raced.

“Why?””

“Because Sophia was connected to him.””

The words hit me.

“Connected how?””

Karen didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“She was his daughter.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything stopped.

Sophia.

Michael Carter’s daughter.

The same man who had killed my parents.

The same man who had manipulated my adoption.

The same man who had spent years searching for me.

My sister.

My enemy.

No.

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

I turned back toward Robert and Daniel.

They were watching me.

They knew something was wrong.

I covered the phone.

“Karen says Sophia is Michael Carter’s daughter.””

Robert’s face changed instantly.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

I put the phone back to my ear.

“Tell me the rest.””

Karen whispered:

“The night your parents died, Sophia was there.””

“How?””

“She was a child.””

“How old?””

“Six.””

I felt sick.

Six years old.

The same age I was when my life changed.

“She saw what happened.””

My voice became quiet.

“She saw my parents die?””

“Yes.””

“And she knew?””

“Yes.””

“Her entire life?””

Karen didn’t answer.

But she didn’t need to.

I looked at Robert.

He looked away.

That told me everything.

“You knew.””

Robert’s eyes lifted.

“I suspected.””

The phone was still in my hand.

Karen heard him.

“Robert?””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

He stepped closer.

“I didn’t know for certain.””

“But you suspected.””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How many people knew my life except me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was everyone.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

I ended the call.

Not because I was done.

Because I couldn’t listen anymore.

I placed the phone on the table.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“Your father’s daughter grew up in my house.””

His face was pale.

“I didn’t know.””

I nodded slowly.

“I believe you.””

The words surprised him.

But I continued.

“That doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

Because nobody did.

Nobody knew what it felt like to discover your entire childhood was built on a lie.

Nobody knew what it felt like to realize the person you envied was never your rival.

She was part of the reason you lost everything.

Robert looked at me.

“We need to find Sophia.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because if Karen is telling the truth, Sophia may know where Michael is.””

“And the box.””

“Yes.””

The box.

The evidence.

The thing everyone wanted.

I looked at the photograph of Karen and Michael again.

Then I remembered something.

Sophia’s phone.

The message.

The inheritance papers.

She wasn’t just following orders.

She knew.

She had known.

Maybe longer than anyone.

“She planned this.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“The dinner.””

I started pacing.

“She knew Karen would accuse me.””

Robert nodded slowly.

“She wanted you to leave.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I stopped.

“Because she needed me gone before the trust transferred.””

Daniel looked confused.

“The trust transfers?””

I looked at the documents.

“On my twenty-fifth birthday.””

Robert picked up the papers.

“When is that?””

I looked at him.

“Tomorrow.””

Silence.

The room changed.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The engagement dinner.

The accusation.

The public humiliation.

The fake betrayal.

They weren’t trying to destroy my relationship.

They were trying to make me disappear before tomorrow.

Because tomorrow, something happened.

Something they couldn’t stop.

Robert checked the documents.

“If the trust activates, you gain control.””

“Control over what?””

“The foundation.””

I stared.

“The entire foundation?””

“Yes.””

“And Sophia?””

Robert’s expression darkened.

“She would lose access.””

I understood.

She didn’t want my fiancé.

She didn’t want my life.

She wanted my inheritance.

And she had spent years pretending to hate me while waiting for the moment she could take it.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

A message.

From Sophia.

I opened it.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

A second message appeared.

*You deserve the truth.*

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

“Don’t go.””

I looked at him.

“You’re afraid.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she’s dangerous.””

I stared at the screen.

Sophia.

The person I had shared a bedroom with.

The person who borrowed my clothes.

The person I called my sister.

Dangerous.

“I need to hear it from her.””

Robert shook his head.

“That could be a trap.””

“Maybe.””

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“For twenty-five years, everyone decided what I was allowed to know.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“I’m done being protected.””

Daniel stood.

“I’m coming with you.””

I almost said no.

But then I remembered something.

Despite everything.

Despite the lies.

He had still tried to protect me.

Maybe he was part of the mess.

But he wasn’t the one who created it.

“Fine.””

Robert grabbed his coat.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You stay here.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“If Sophia is dangerous, I need to know what she says when she thinks I’m alone.””

Robert hesitated.

Then nodded.

An hour later, Daniel and I arrived at the abandoned building where Sophia had chosen to meet.

The place was empty.

Too empty.

I looked around.

“She picked this place?””

Daniel nodded.

“She sent the location.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

*Third floor.*

We walked upstairs.

Every step echoed.

When we reached the third floor, the door at the end of the hallway was already open.

Inside, Sophia stood by the window.

She looked different.

No tears.

No fake sadness.

No performance.

Just Sophia.

She looked at me.

And smiled sadly.

“You finally know.””

I stared at her.

“Know what?””

Her eyes filled.

“The truth.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Leave.””

He stepped forward.

“No.””

Sophia laughed quietly.

“Still protecting her?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Not from you.””

Sophia looked back at me.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Emma, I’m sorry.””

I froze.

Not because she apologized.

Because I had spent my entire life waiting for those words.

And now that they came, they felt empty.

“Sorry for what?””

She looked down.

“For being the reason your parents died.””

The room went silent.

My breath stopped.

“What?””

Sophia wiped her eyes.

“My father didn’t kill them because of the trust.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because my father found out your parents discovered who I really was.””

I stepped back.

“What does that mean?””

Sophia looked at me.

And whispered:

“The night your parents died, they weren’t trying to protect the money.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“They were trying to protect me from my father.””

I couldn’t speak.

May you like

Sophia took a shaky breath.

“And I was the one who told him where they were.””
