Chapter 4: The Truth Buried Beneath My Childhood
For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The words didn’t feel real.
They floated in the air between us, impossible and horrifying.
*They were murdered.*
I stared at Karen.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had spent twenty years telling me I was lucky she chose me.
The woman who had just admitted she knew a secret about my life that I had never even imagined.
“What did you say?””
My voice barely existed.
Karen looked away.
That was when I knew.
She wasn’t lying.
Not this time.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, you don’t get to say my name like that.””
The tears I had been holding back finally fell.
“You don’t get to stand there after twenty years and tell me my entire life was a lie.””
The restaurant was still watching.
I didn’t care.
Let them.
Let everyone see the family I had spent my whole life protecting.
Let them see what they really were.
Karen lowered her voice.
“Your biological parents were involved in something dangerous.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then Sophia.
Then me.
“They discovered someone was stealing money from the family trust.””
A cold shiver ran through me.
“The trust?””
Karen nodded.
“The one created for you.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because nothing made sense anymore.
“So my parents died because of money?””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“They died because they tried to expose the truth.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I grabbed the edge of a nearby chair.
“Who killed them?””
Karen’s lips parted.
But no words came.
That silence told me there was more.
So much more.
“Who?””
She looked down.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
“You know enough.””
Karen closed her eyes.
“I knew they were afraid.””
“When?””
She hesitated.
“When you were a baby.””
A painful laugh escaped me.
“When I was a baby?””
I looked around.
“At what point were you planning to tell me?””
Nobody answered.
“When I turned eighteen?””
Silence.
“When I got married?””
Still nothing.
“After you took my inheritance?””
Karen flinched.
Good.
She should have.
Because for the first time, I wasn’t the little girl who accepted every excuse.
I was the woman standing in front of them demanding the truth.
Sophia crossed her arms.
“This is getting ridiculous.””
I looked at her.
“Ridiculous?””
“Yes.””
She rolled her eyes.
“You’re acting like Mom planned all of this.””
I stared.
“She did.””
“No, she didn’t.””
“Then why did she know about my parents?””
Sophia opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stepped closer.
“Why did she know about the trust?””
Silence.
“Why did you know?””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
She knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Daniel looked at her.
“Sophia.””
She looked away.
That was when something inside me broke.
Because even now.
Even after everything.
They were still hiding things.
Still deciding what I deserved to know.
I turned toward Daniel.
“What exactly did Robert Hayes tell you?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I shouldn’t have answered the phone.””
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“He said he had been trying to reach you for months.””
“Months?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he contact me?””
His eyes shifted.
“Because someone blocked the messages.””
My face went cold.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked at Karen.
She looked terrified.
“Who blocked them?””
Karen whispered:
“I did.””
The confession landed harder than the slap.
I stared at her.
“You did?””
She nodded slowly.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I almost smiled.
There it was.
The excuse everyone used.
Protecting me.
Every lie had worn the same disguise.
“I was protecting you.””
“I was doing what was best.””
“You’ll understand someday.””
I was tired of understanding.
“I was six years old when you took me in.””
Karen nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did you love me then?””
Her face changed.
And for the first time, she couldn’t answer.
That was worse than anything.
Because I had spent years wondering if maybe I imagined the distance.
Maybe I was too sensitive.
Maybe I expected too much.
But now I knew.
Children know when they are unwanted.
They feel it before they understand it.
I felt it every time Karen hugged Sophia and never hugged me.
I felt it every time she praised Sophia and only noticed me when I was useful.
I felt it every time she said, “You should be grateful.””
Karen whispered:
“I cared about you.””
I looked at her.
“That’s not the same thing.””
She cried.
Real tears this time.
But I didn’t move.
Because tears didn’t erase damage.
They only proved someone finally realized they had caused it.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emma, please.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“I need to explain.””
“You had twenty chances.””
“I was scared.””
I nodded.
“That’s honest.””
He looked hurt.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t tell me because you were afraid I would leave.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
“And you were right.””
His eyes lifted.
The pain on his face almost made me forgive him.
Almost.
But then I remembered the ring.
The proposal.
The future I imagined.
All built on a foundation I didn’t know existed.
“I loved you,” I whispered.
His face fell.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“I loved you because I thought you saw me.””
I looked around the table.
“But everyone here only saw what I could give them.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Karen walked toward me.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like she was approaching someone who might break.
“Emma.””
I stepped back.
She stopped.
“I made mistakes.””
I laughed quietly.
“Mistakes?””
My voice rose.
“Mistakes are forgetting someone’s birthday.””
I pointed at my chest.
“This was my entire life.””
Karen looked devastated.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Her answer was barely audible.
“Of losing everything.””
The sentence confused me.
“What?””
She looked at Sophia.
Then back at me.
“After your parents died, there were people looking for you.””
My blood ran cold.
“Looking for me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
She took a shaky breath.
“But I knew they wanted access to the trust.””
The pieces began connecting.
My parents.
The trust.
The adoption.
The lies.
The inheritance.
Someone wanted me hidden.
Someone wanted me controlled.
And Karen had helped them.
Maybe not directly.
Maybe not completely.
But she had.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why did Robert Hayes call you?””
He hesitated.
“Because he couldn’t reach you.””
“Why you?””
Another silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Because your parents left instructions.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Instructions for when you turned twenty-five.””
My heartbeat stopped.
“I’m twenty-five.””
He nodded.
“He was supposed to meet you.””
“Meet me for what?””
Daniel looked at Karen.
She shook her head.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
Karen’s face was full of fear.
“You cannot meet him.””
“Why?””
She stepped closer.
“Because if Robert finds you, they’ll know you’re alive.””
The words sent ice through my veins.
“Who?””
Karen’s eyes filled with panic.
“The people who killed your parents.””
Nobody moved.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
I didn’t recognize the number.
But the message made my blood freeze.
*Stop asking questions about your parents.*
A second message appeared.
*You survived once. Don’t make us finish what we started.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel saw my face.
“What happened?””
I slowly looked up.
My hands were shaking.
And before I could answer, another message arrived.
This one contained a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Standing outside my apartment.
Taken that morning.
Someone had been watching me.
May you like
And beneath the picture were five words:
*We know where you live.*
