Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Papers
The restaurant lights suddenly felt too bright.
I stared at the message glowing on Sophia’s phone screen, trying to convince myself I had read it wrong.
Maybe I was seeing what I wanted to see.
Maybe the shock had twisted the words.
But they were still there.
*Make sure she leaves tonight. The inheritance papers are ready. When she’s gone, everything goes to you.*
My eyes moved from the phone to Karen.
Then to Sophia.
Then finally to Daniel.
The three people standing in front of me.
The three people who had been holding pieces of a secret I was never supposed to discover.
“What inheritance?”” I asked.
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Karen’s face changed first.
The anger disappeared.
The confidence disappeared.
For the first time that night, she looked afraid.
Sophia quickly grabbed her phone and turned the screen away.
“What are you talking about?”” she said.
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because I had spent my entire life watching Sophia pretend.
Pretend she was hurt.
Pretend she was innocent.
Pretend she didn’t know exactly what she was doing.
But now I was done playing along.
“I saw the message.””
Sophia’s expression froze.
“What message?””
“The one your mother sent you.””
The entire table went silent again.
Daniel looked at Karen.
“Karen?””
She looked away.
That small movement told me everything.
She wasn’t confused.
She wasn’t shocked.
She was caught.
I pushed my chair back slowly.
The sound of the legs scraping against the floor made several people turn.
“I want to know what’s happening.””
Karen crossed her arms.
“There’s nothing happening.””
“Then why are there inheritance papers?””
Her lips tightened.
“You’re twisting things.””
I looked at Sophia.
“She’s right. I must be twisting things.””
Sophia raised an eyebrow.
“You always do that.””
The words landed like a slap.
“You always make yourself the victim.””
I stared at her.
“Really?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
A strange calm came over me.
Because suddenly, after twenty years, I wasn’t confused anymore.
I wasn’t searching for reasons.
I wasn’t wondering if maybe I was too sensitive.
I was seeing everything clearly.
“You know what’s funny?”” I said.
Sophia frowned.
“What?””
“I spent years thinking I was the problem because everyone treated me like I was.””
Her face softened slightly.
Almost.
But then she smiled.
“And now?””
I looked at her.
“Now I think you all got very comfortable hurting the person who never fought back.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Emma…”
I looked at him.
I hated that hearing my name from him still affected me.
Because before tonight, Daniel had been the one person I believed chose me.
Not because he had to.
Not because I was useful.
Because he loved me.
At least, that was what I believed.
“Did you know about this?”” I asked.
His face tightened.
“About what?””
“The inheritance.””
His silence lasted only a second.
But a second was enough.
My heart sank.
“You did.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
“Emma, listen to me.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I listened my whole life.””
My voice cracked.
“I listened when my mother told me Sophia needed more than I did. I listened when everyone told me to be patient. I listened when I was treated like an outsider in my own home.””
I looked at him.
“I’m tired of listening.””
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“I didn’t know they were planning this tonight.””
The word tonight stood out.
Not denying the planning.
Just denying the timing.
My stomach twisted.
“So there was a plan.””
He looked away.
That was my answer.
Sophia sighed dramatically.
“Oh my God. Can everyone stop acting like we’re criminals?””
I turned toward her.
“You had a message saying my mother wants me gone so you can get everything.””
Sophia rolled her eyes.
“You don’t even know what you’re talking about.””
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Karen stepped forward.
“That message was private.””
I looked at her.
“Private?””
My voice rose.
“You sent it because you thought I wouldn’t see it.””
A few guests nearby were still watching.
Some whispered.
Some looked uncomfortable.
But I didn’t care anymore.
Let them see.
Let them know.
I had spent twenty years protecting this family’s image.
Tonight, they could protect themselves.
Karen lowered her voice.
“You need to calm down.””
“No.””
I surprised even myself with how steady I sounded.
“I don’t.””
She stared at me.
“I think I’ve been calm for twenty years.””
The words hung between us.
Then I turned to Daniel.
“Tell me the truth.””
He looked at me.
“What truth?””
“Why did you propose?””
His face changed.
A tiny flicker of pain crossed his eyes.
“Because I love you.””
I waited.
But he didn’t say anything else.
And that hurt.
Because if it was true, there should have been more.
There should have been certainty.
There should have been no hesitation.
Sophia noticed.
Of course she noticed.
She always noticed weakness.
She stepped closer to Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel looked at her sharply.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Sophia’s voice became colder.
“She deserves to know.””
My hands went cold.
“What do I deserve to know?””
Sophia smiled.
“You think Daniel chose you because you were special.””
I looked at Daniel.
He didn’t move.
“He didn’t.””
A painful pressure built behind my ribs.
“Sophia…”
She ignored me.
“He chose you because he knew Mom would never accept him and me together.””
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“Enough.””
“No, Daniel.””
She looked at me.
“Tell her.””
I looked between them.
“What is she talking about?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Daniel finally spoke.
“Emma, it’s complicated.””
I almost smiled.
Because that was the sentence people used when the truth was ugly.
“Complicated?””
He stepped toward me.
“Before you and I started dating, Sophia and I were friends.””
Sophia laughed softly.
“Friends?””
Daniel shot her a warning look.
But she continued.
“Don’t pretend.””
I felt something inside me crack.
“How long?””
Daniel swallowed.
“What?””
“How long were you two involved?””
His eyes dropped.
That was when my world changed.
Because I didn’t need him to say it.
I already knew.
Sophia answered for him.
“Six months.””
The room seemed to spin.
Six months.
Six months before he gave me a ring.
Six months before he told me I was the woman he wanted to spend his life with.
Six months when I thought I had finally been chosen.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel reached for me.
“Emma, it wasn’t like that.””
I pulled my hand away.
“Don’t touch me.””
“Please let me explain.””
“Explain what?””
My voice broke.
“That you were in love with my sister?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
He had no answer.
Karen suddenly spoke.
“See?””
I looked at her.
“This is why you need to leave.””
I stared.
“What?””
“You’re destroying everything.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“I’m destroying everything?””
She nodded.
“You’ve always been selfish.””
The old anger returned.
But this time, it didn’t hurt.
It burned.
“You adopted me.””
Karen’s face hardened.
“Yes.””
“You want me gone.””
Silence.
“You spent twenty years reminding me I should be grateful.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“But you never wanted a daughter.””
I looked at Sophia.
“You wanted someone who would make your real daughter’s life easier.””
Sophia’s expression shifted.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Because I finally understood.
I wasn’t the unwanted child.
I was the useful one.
The babysitter.
The helper.
The person who was supposed to step aside whenever Sophia wanted something.
Karen grabbed her purse.
“This conversation is over.””
“No.””
She stopped.
I picked up the engagement ring from the table.
The diamond caught the light.
A symbol of a future I thought I had.
A future that now felt like a lie.
“You want me gone because of an inheritance.””
Karen’s face went still.
I held up the ring.
“You’re going to explain exactly what that means.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He just stared at the name.
I saw it.
A name I didn’t recognize.
A lawyer.
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone watched him.
His face became more serious with every second.
Then he looked directly at me.
And whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
“Emma… there’s something you need to know about your adoption.””
My fingers tightened around the ring.
“What about it?””
Daniel swallowed.
The color drained from his face.
“The adoption records were changed.””
A chill moved through me.
“What?””
He looked at Karen.
Then Sophia.
Then back at me.
May you like
And said the one sentence that made the entire room disappear.
“You weren’t adopted by Karen’s family by accident.””
