Chapter 8: The Witness Who Ran Away
I couldn’t move.
Robert’s confession stayed in the room like smoke.
Impossible to ignore.
Impossible to escape.
*I was there the night your parents died.*
Every part of me wanted to reject it.
To tell myself that after everything I had learned, this was just another lie.
Another secret.
Another person taking pieces of my life and keeping them from me.
But Robert wasn’t looking like a man hiding something.
He looked like a man who had been carrying a nightmare for twenty-five years.
“Explain.””
My voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Robert looked at the floor.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“You deserve the truth.””
“Yes.””
His eyes lifted.
“I was your father’s closest friend.””
I waited.
“That’s not enough.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
He took a deep breath.
“Your father, David, trusted me with everything. His business. His fears. His plans to expose what was happening inside the foundation.””
I looked at the folder.
“And you knew about the people stealing from the trust.””
“Yes.””
“Who were they?””
Robert hesitated.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
He looked toward the window.
“Michael Carter was one of them.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Hearing his father’s name still seemed to hurt him.
Robert continued.
“Your father discovered that money was being moved through several companies. Fake accounts. Fake charities. People who looked legitimate from the outside.””
“And Michael was involved.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did my father trust him?””
“Because Michael was charming.””
Robert’s expression hardened.
“He was the kind of man people wanted to believe.””
I almost laughed.
That sounded familiar.
People like Michael.
People like Karen.
People who could smile while destroying someone.
“Why didn’t you stop him?””
Robert’s face fell.
“Because I made the mistake of trusting him too.””
The answer was honest.
But it wasn’t enough.
“You were there that night.””
“Yes.””
“Tell me what happened.””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“I received a call from your father.””
“When?””
“The night they died.””
My heart tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He said someone had found out about the evidence.””
“Evidence?””
Robert nodded.
“The records showing the theft. The names. The transactions.””
“And?””
“He told me he had moved the original files.””
“Where?””
Robert looked at me.
“He never told me.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he knew someone was listening.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Someone was in the house.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“I arrived twenty minutes later.””
The room became silent.
“And?””
He swallowed.
“The house was already on fire.””
I stared at him.
Fire.
A detail nobody had told me.
Not Karen.
Not anyone.
“My parents died in a fire?””
Robert nodded.
“The official report said it was an accident.””
“But it wasn’t.””
“No.””
“Because you saw something.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I waited.
“Tell me.””
His hands trembled.
“I saw Michael Carter leaving.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“My father?””
Robert nodded.
“He was standing outside the house.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“No, that can’t be true.””
Robert looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel stepped back.
Like the words physically hit him.
“My father told everyone he was overseas that week.””
“He lied.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I looked at Daniel.
I wanted to feel sorry for him.
I really did.
But all I could see was another connection.
Another reason my life had been controlled by people connected to him.
“What happened next?””
Robert looked at me.
“I ran.””
I blinked.
“You ran?””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“You left?””
“I had you.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Robert looked at me.
“I found you inside.””
The room disappeared.
“You found me?””
He nodded.
“You were six months old.””
My eyes filled.
“You were there when they died.””
“Yes.””
“You saw them.””
“Yes.””
“And you took me?””
His face broke.
“I tried.””
“What does that mean?””
Robert looked away.
“Michael saw me.””
A chill moved through me.
“He knew?””
“He knew I had you.””
“Then why didn’t he take me?””
Robert’s answer was terrifying.
“Because he thought I would lead him to the trust.””
I stared.
“He thought you knew where the evidence was.””
“Yes.””
“And did you?””
Robert didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Did you know?””
Slowly, he nodded.
A strange calm came over me.
“What?””
“I knew your father had hidden something.””
“Where?””
“I didn’t know.””
“But you know now.””
Robert looked at the folder.
Then at me.
“I think your mother left clues.””
My hands tightened.
The letter.
The documents.
The secrets.
Everything pointed somewhere.
But where?
Daniel finally spoke.
“Why didn’t you tell Emma any of this?””
Robert looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Michael?””
“Yes.””
“And you let her grow up believing her parents abandoned her?””
The words were sharp.
Robert accepted them.
“I failed her.””
Nobody disagreed.
Because he had.
Maybe he had tried to protect me.
Maybe he had saved my life.
But he had still let me live with a lie.
I turned away.
I needed air.
I needed something normal.
But there was no normal anymore.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
My stomach dropped.
Everyone looked at me.
This time, it wasn’t a threat.
It was a photo.
A recent photo.
Taken inside my apartment.
My bedroom.
The message underneath said:
*Looking for this?*
Attached was a picture of a small wooden box.
A box I recognized.
I froze.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
“That box.””
“What about it?””
“It was my mother’s.””
Robert stood quickly.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Karen gave it to me when I was eighteen.””
Everyone went silent.
“She said it was the only thing I had from my biological parents.””
Robert’s face changed.
“She had it?””
I nodded.
“What’s wrong?””
Robert’s voice became serious.
“Your mother would never have given that box to Karen.””
“Why?””
“Because it contained the evidence.””
My heart stopped.
The box.
The one thing I had always kept hidden.
The one thing I never opened because Karen told me it was too painful.
The one thing I thought was just a memory.
Someone had taken it.
Or worse.
Someone had been waiting for me to find it.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is Karen now?””
I checked my phone.
No new messages.
Then another thought hit me.
The last time I saw Karen was at the restaurant.
After everything happened.
She had left.
Alone.
Unless she wasn’t alone.
I looked at Robert.
“Michael knows about the box.””
Robert nodded.
“And if he has it?””
“Then he has what your parents died protecting.””
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then Karen’s voice came through.
“Emma.””
My blood ran cold.
“Where are you?””
A shaky breath.
“Please listen to me.””
I almost hung up.
Almost.
But something stopped me.
“What do you want?””
“I need to tell you the truth.””
I laughed softly.
“Now?””
“Emma, I know you hate me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised her.
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“I deserve that.””
I said nothing.
Karen continued.
“I lied to you.””
“You mean about everything?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of Michael?””
Silence.
That was my answer.
“What did you do?””
She started crying.
And for the first time, she sounded less like the woman who controlled my childhood.
She sounded like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“I helped him.””
The room went completely still.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
“I helped Michael find the trust.””
Daniel looked at me.
Robert went pale.
Karen continued:
“But I never knew he would kill them.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“You knew my parents?””
“Yes.””
“You helped the man who murdered them?””
“I was trying to protect Sophia.””
The words cut deeper than anything else.
Of course.
Sophia.
Always Sophia.
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?””
Karen was silent.
Then she whispered:
“Somewhere Michael can’t find me.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
A pause.
Then:
“Emma, there’s something you need to know about Sophia.””
I felt a chill.
“What about her?””
Karen’s voice dropped.
“She was never your sister.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“She was there the night your parents died.””
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
“What are you saying?””
Karen whispered:
“Sophia knows exactly what happened twenty-five years ago.””
The line went quiet.
May you like
Then Karen said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.
“She was the reason your parents found out they were betrayed.””
