Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Buried
My father stood beneath the old oak tree.
The same tree where my mother had hidden her secrets.
The same tree where my childhood memories lived.
And now, under its branches, he looked like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.
Robert Carter.
The man who raised me.
The man who lied to me.
The man who had spent my entire life controlling the truth.
Ethan moved between us.
“Stay back.””
Robert looked at his brother.
For a second, something almost human crossed his face.
Pain.
“You’re still protecting her?””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“I’m protecting Emily.””
Robert looked at me.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You’re protecting her from me.””
The honesty shocked me.
I stared at him.
“Is that an admission?””
His eyes lowered.
“No.””
“Then what is it?””
He looked older suddenly.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
Like the weight of every lie had finally become too heavy to carry.
“It’s regret.””
I laughed softly.
“Regret?””
My grip tightened around Alexander Carter’s letter.
“You don’t get to regret this.””
Robert flinched.
“I know.””
I shook my head.
“No, you don’t.””
The anger I had been holding all night finally broke through.
“You don’t know what it feels like to grow up wondering why your own father never looked at you the way other fathers looked at their daughters.””
His face changed.
“You don’t know what it feels like to stand at your mother’s grave and believe she died alone.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“You don’t know what it feels like to think your brother abandoned you.””
Robert looked away.
And for the first time, I realized something.
He wasn't defending himself.
Because he knew I was right.
Ethan spoke quietly.
“Tell her.””
Robert looked at him.
“No.””
“You owe her.””
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“She’ll hate me.””
I stepped closer.
“I already do.””
The words hurt.
Even saying them.
Because some part of me still wanted him to deny everything.
To tell me there was a mistake.
That he was still my father.
But he didn't.
Instead, he looked at the house.
At the life he had built.
Then back at me.
“Your mother met Alexander before she met me.””
I said nothing.
“I knew about him.””
My heart pounded.
“Who was he?””
Robert looked at the letter in my hand.
“You already know.””
“Tell me.””
He took a breath.
“Alexander Carter was my father.””
I froze.
The world went quiet.
“No.””
Ethan looked down.
Robert continued.
“Your grandfather.””
The words felt impossible.
I stared at him.
“Then…”
My voice failed.
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
I understood before he said it.
And I hated that I understood.
“My biological father was your brother?””
Ethan closed his eyes.
Robert looked away.
The silence was the answer.
I stepped back.
“No.””
The word came out broken.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Ethan’s voice was gentle.
“Emily…”
“Don’t.””
I held up my hand.
“I need a minute.””
But there was no minute.
There was no pause.
Not anymore.
My entire identity had shattered.
I wasn't just learning my family had secrets.
I was learning my entire existence was connected to a betrayal that happened before I was even born.
Robert swallowed.
“Alexander loved Evelyn.””
I looked at him.
“And you?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“I loved her too.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“No.””
He looked at the ground.
“It doesn’t.””
The snow continued falling.
Quietly.
Like the world didn't care that mine had fallen apart.
“My father controlled everything,” Robert said.
“Money. Businesses. People.””
He looked toward the house.
“When Alexander died, the Carter fortune was supposed to pass to his children.””
I frowned.
“His children?””
Robert nodded.
“But Alexander changed his will.””
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“Because of me.””
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
“He left everything connected to the family trust for you.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Robert looked at me.
“Because he knew you existed.””
My breath caught.
“And you?””
“I was angry.””
His voice cracked.
“I thought I had lost everything.””
I shook my head.
“So you took me?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“I didn't take you.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother chose me.””
That surprised me.
I looked toward the house.
Toward Evelyn.
“She chose you?””
Robert nodded.
“She thought I would protect you.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“She was wrong.””
The words were devastating because they came from him.
Ethan looked at him.
“You didn’t just fail her.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“You’re right.””
“You became the thing she feared.””
Robert didn't argue.
I walked back toward the house.
My legs felt heavy.
My mind was full of questions.
When I reached the porch, my mother was standing there.
She had heard everything.
Of course she had.
She looked at me.
And I saw the woman who had held me as a baby.
The woman who had disappeared.
The woman who had broken my heart.
“Emily.””
I stopped.
“Was it true?””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“Why?””
She stepped closer.
“Because Alexander was dying.””
My throat tightened.
“You loved him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“But I loved Robert too.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t understand.””
“I was young.””
She wiped her tears.
“I was scared.””
She looked toward the garden.
“When Alexander died, I thought the safest place for you was with Robert.””
I laughed painfully.
“And was it?””
She didn't answer.
Because it wasn't.
My mother reached for my hand.
I let her.
Barely.
“He promised me he would protect you.””
My eyes burned.
“He promised.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Then money changed him.””
A voice interrupted.
“Not money.””
Everyone turned.
Karen stood near the doorway.
Her face was pale.
“Power.””
She looked at Robert.
“That’s what changed you.””
Robert looked at her.
“You knew.””
Karen nodded.
“I knew enough.””
She stepped outside.
“I knew you were hiding something about Emily.””
Her voice shook.
“But I didn’t know how far it went.””
I looked at her.
“Why did you stay?””
Karen looked ashamed.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
She looked at my mother.
“I thought if I stayed close, I could protect Emily.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone was protecting me.””
My voice broke.
“Except nobody trusted me.””
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer.
Then Thomas came outside holding a phone.
His face was serious.
“Emily.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at Robert.
Then at me.
“We have a problem.””
I frowned.
“What now?””
Thomas handed me the phone.
On the screen was a news alert.
A live broadcast.
The headline made my stomach drop.
*CARTER HOLDINGS CEO FOUND DEAD AFTER SUSPECTED FINANCIAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION*
I looked at Robert.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas shook his head.
“It happened ten minutes ago.””
I stared at the screen.
Then I saw the victim’s name.
Not Robert.
Not Victor.
Not Ethan.
Someone else.
Someone connected to everything.
Someone who had been missing from the story.
*Victor Hale.*
My hands went cold.
“But he was here.””
Thomas nodded.
“I know.””
The phone buzzed again.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Now you know why your father was never the biggest threat.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Then another message arrived.
*The person who killed Victor is the same person who killed Alexander Carter.*
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because the final line appeared underneath.
*And they are standing inside the house with you.*
