Chapter 5: The Video I Never Knew Existed

The file name sat on the screen.

My name.

My heart stopped.

*EMILY_CARTER_DECEMBER17.*

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The laptop fan hummed softly in the silence.

I stared at the screen, waiting for someone to explain.

Waiting for someone to tell me this was another lie.

Another trick.

Another secret hidden inside a family that seemed to have been built on them.

“What is that?”” I whispered.

No one answered.

I turned toward my mother.

Her face had lost all color.

“Mom?””

She looked at the laptop.

Then at Thomas.

“Did you know about this?””

Thomas shook his head slowly.

“No.””

That frightened me.

Because Thomas had seemed like the person who knew everything.

The documents.

The key.

The trust.

The plan.

But now he looked just as confused as I was.

I looked at my father.

Robert wasn't looking at the screen.

He was looking at me.

And that was worse.

“Why are you looking at me like that?””

He didn't answer.

“Dad.””

His jaw tightened.

“Emily, you need to understand something.””

I stepped away.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

I didn't want explanations.

Not from him.

Not anymore.

“Play it.””

My mother looked at me.

“Emily—”

“Play it.””

My voice shook.

“But I need to know.””

I sat down in the chair beside the desk.

My hands were trembling.

Thomas pressed the file.

The screen went black.

Then the video started.

At first, I saw nothing.

Just darkness.

Then an image appeared.

A hotel room.

I recognized it.

My breath caught.

I had been there.

The Hampton hotel downtown.

I had gone there after a fight with my father.

The camera angle was from across the room.

Hidden.

Watching.

I stood in front of the window.

Holding a folder.

My folder.

The one containing financial records from Carter Holdings.

The same records I had found while helping with the company’s annual reports.

The same records that had bothered me.

Because numbers didn't lie.

People did.

On the screen, I heard my own voice.

“I know what you did.””

A chill ran through me.

I remembered that night.

But I didn't remember anyone recording it.

The video continued.

My younger self stood near the window.

Facing someone off-camera.

Then a voice answered.

A voice I knew.

Robert.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

My stomach dropped.

Everyone in the room heard it.

My father was there.

I watched myself on the screen.

“You moved money from the company account.””

Robert answered.

“You’re making accusations you can’t prove.””

“I have proof.””

My father stepped into view.

His face was different.

Cold.

Controlled.

Not the father I knew.

“You should have left those documents alone.””

I covered my mouth.

I remembered that conversation.

But not like this.

I remembered my father being angry.

I remembered him telling me I was paranoid.

I remembered leaving the hotel feeling guilty.

Feeling like maybe I had misunderstood.

But now I saw the truth.

I hadn't misunderstood.

I had been warned.

On the screen, I said:

“What happened to Mom?””

The room went completely silent.

My father froze.

My mother closed her eyes.

I watched myself continue.

“I found the old police reports.””

Robert looked away.

“You don’t know what you found.””

“I know you were there.””

The video shook slightly.

Maybe the person recording moved.

Maybe they were nervous.

Then Robert walked closer to me.

Too close.

“You’re exactly like her.””

My younger self whispered:

“Like who?””

My father stared at me.

“Your mother.””

The recording ended.

Just like that.

Black screen.

No ending.

No explanation.

I sat there, unable to move.

My own memory was suddenly full of holes.

Because I remembered that night.

But I didn't remember the fear.

I didn't remember seeing my father as a threat.

My brain had protected me.

Or maybe I had protected him.

“Who recorded this?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Thomas.

“Who?””

He looked toward my mother.

Evelyn slowly spoke.

“I did.””

My head snapped toward her.

“You?””

She nodded.

“I needed proof.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

Pain crossed her face.

“Because after that night, I realized Robert knew you were investigating.””

I stood up.

“So you just watched?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I protected you.””

I stared at her.

“By hiding?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I thought if Robert believed you knew nothing, you would be safe.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Safe?””

I pointed around the room.

“This was safe?””

My mother lowered her eyes.

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But seeing her standing there alive made everything more complicated.

I had spent six years grieving her.

Six years wondering if she knew how much I loved her.

Six years wishing I had one more conversation.

And now she was here.

And she had secrets.

So many secrets.

Robert stepped forward.

“Emily, listen to me.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because there’s more to this.””

“There’s always more.””

My voice was sharp.

“Every time someone tells me the truth, I find another lie underneath it.””

Robert looked at my mother.

“She never told you why she disappeared.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Robert.””

“What?””

He laughed.

“You want to pretend you did this for Emily?””

My mother became still.

Robert looked at me.

“Ask her why she really left.””

I turned.

“Mom?””

She didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

My chest tightened.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Evelyn looked devastated.

“Emily, it’s complicated.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“It’s not.””

I looked at everyone.

“It’s actually very simple.””

I pointed at the room.

“My father tried to destroy my mother.””

I pointed at Thomas.

“You all knew she was alive.””

Then at my mother.

“And you hid from me.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“Emily, you think tonight was about the house.””

She looked toward the window.

Toward the snow-covered property.

“It wasn’t.””

A strange fear entered her voice.

“The house was only the beginning.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas suddenly looked toward the hallway.

Everyone noticed.

“What?”” I asked.

He didn't answer.

He was listening.

Then we heard it.

A sound from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Someone walking.

Slowly.

Carefully.

My mother’s face changed.

“No.””

Karen whispered:

“What?””

Evelyn stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.””

Robert looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“What is it?”” I demanded.

My mother looked at the staircase.

“There is only one person who knew about that room.””

“What room?””

Nobody answered.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.

A person stood there.

Watching us.

I couldn't see the face.

But I knew the voice before they spoke.

Because it was a voice from my childhood.

A voice I thought belonged to a memory.

“Emily.””

My blood went cold.

The person stepped into the light.

And I saw him.

My older brother.

Daniel.

But Daniel had tears in his eyes.

And a gunshot wound scar across his chest I had never seen before.

“I'm sorry,” he said.

My mother covered her mouth.

“Daniel…”

He looked at all of us.

Then at the USB drive on the desk.

“I didn't want you to find out like this.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Daniel… what happened to you?””

He looked at my father.

Then at me.

And his answer destroyed the last piece of my family I still believed in.

“Dad didn’t just try to kill Mom.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“He tried to kill me too.””
