Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.
*— Ethan Carter.*
My fingers went numb.
No.
It couldn't be.
Not again.
Not another impossible return from the dead.
Not another person everyone had buried.
I looked up slowly.
Nobody had noticed the message yet.
My family was still trapped in the chaos of their own secrets.
My mother was watching Robert.
Robert was watching Victor.
Daniel was watching me.
But I was watching a name that belonged to a ghost.
Ethan Carter.
My uncle.
My father's younger brother.
The man who disappeared twelve years ago.
The man everyone said had run away after a business disagreement.
The man whose old photograph had been removed from the family albums so quietly that I barely remembered he existed.
I looked at Robert.
My father.
His face changed when he noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
The lie felt disgusting.
But I wasn't ready.
Not yet.
Not after everything.
Not when every truth I had discovered only opened another door.
Daniel noticed.
He always noticed.
“Emily.””
I looked at him.
His eyes moved toward my phone.
“What did you see?””
I shook my head.
“Not now.””
He studied my face.
Then nodded.
He understood.
Because Daniel knew what it felt like to carry a secret alone.
Thomas looked at the letter in my hands.
“What did it say?””
I folded it quickly.
“Nothing that makes sense.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
My body reacted before my mind did.
I pulled the paper away.
“No.””
The word surprised everyone.
Including me.
For my entire life, I had given my father everything.
My trust.
My loyalty.
My silence.
But not anymore.
His expression hardened.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I held his gaze.
“You don’t get to ask me for things you spent years hiding from me.””
The room went quiet.
Then Victor smiled.
Not happily.
More like he had been waiting for this moment.
“Finally.””
Robert looked at him.
“Shut up.””
Victor ignored him.
“The girl finally stopped trying to be the perfect daughter.””
My jaw tightened.
“Who are you?””
His smile faded.
“I’m someone who knew your family before you were born.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“No.””
He looked toward my mother.
“Because Evelyn never told you the full story.””
My mother looked exhausted.
“Victor, leave.””
He laughed.
“You still think you can send me away?””
Thomas stepped forward.
“This ends tonight.””
Victor looked at him.
“Does it?””
His eyes moved around the room.
“You all keep acting like midnight changed everything.””
He pointed toward the house.
“But the truth was buried here long before tonight.””
My phone vibrated again.
I looked down.
Another message.
*You have ten minutes. Come alone.*
My heart raced.
Ethan.
If it was really Ethan...
If he was alive...
Then he had answers.
But if everyone else had been hiding the truth from me, why should I trust him?
Because I didn't know him.
Because I remembered him.
Because before he disappeared, Ethan was the only person in the family who never treated me like a child.
He was the uncle who let me sit in the driver's seat of his truck.
The uncle who secretly bought me ice cream before dinner.
The uncle who once told me:
“Emily, the truth is always expensive. But lies cost more.””
I looked at the message again.
Ten minutes.
I stepped toward the hallway.
Daniel followed immediately.
“Where are you going?””
I stopped.
“I need air.””
He looked at me.
“You’re lying.””
I almost smiled.
“You taught me that.””
He lowered his voice.
“Who texted you?””
I didn't answer.
His face changed.
“Emily.””
I whispered:
“Ethan.””
Daniel froze.
The color drained from his face.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Ethan is dead.””
I looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
Daniel didn't answer.
That was enough.
I walked toward the back door.
Daniel grabbed my arm gently.
“Don’t go alone.””
I looked at his hand.
Then at him.
“You went alone.””
Pain crossed his face.
“Yeah.””
“And look what happened.””
He released me.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.””
Then I walked away.
The garden was silent.
The old oak tree stood in the moonlight.
The same tree that had held my mother’s secrets.
The same tree that had hidden my future.
I walked past it.
Toward the edge of the property.
A figure waited near the road.
My heart pounded.
“Ethan?””
The man stepped out of the shadows.
Older.
Different.
But familiar.
His hair was gray.
His face had more lines.
But his eyes...
I knew those eyes.
My uncle stared at me.
And tears filled his face.
“Emily.””
My breath caught.
He said my name exactly like he used to.
Like I was still the little girl who followed him around the garden.
I couldn't move.
“You’re alive.””
He nodded.
“I am.””
The anger came before the relief.
“You let me believe you were dead?””
His expression broke.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
Ethan looked down.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“Your father tried to kill me.””
The words were becoming familiar.
That was the worst part.
Another person.
Another betrayal.
Another impossible truth.
“Why?””
“Because I found out what he was doing.””
“The company?””
He nodded.
“More than the company.””
He looked toward the house.
“Your father has spent thirty years building a life around a lie.””
I crossed my arms.
“What lie?””
He looked at me.
“You.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
“You were never supposed to be part of Robert’s life.””
I stared.
“Explain.””
Ethan took a breath.
“Before Robert met Evelyn, he worked with your biological father.””
“My biological father?””
The words still felt strange.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Ethan looked away.
“I can tell you.””
A pause.
“But once you know, there is no going back.””
I almost laughed.
“Do you understand what tonight has been?””
I pointed toward the house.
“My mother is alive.””
“My brother disappeared.””
“My father tried to destroy my family.””
“I found out my entire identity might be a lie.””
I stepped closer.
“There is no going back.””
Ethan nodded.
“You’re right.””
He reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
I stared.
“No.””
His face softened.
“She wrote this for you.””
“Who?””
He looked toward the house.
“Your biological father.””
My heart stopped.
I took the envelope.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the name at the bottom wasn't.
I knew it.
Everyone knew it.
Because it belonged to the most powerful man in the Carter family history.
A man whose company name was on every building downtown.
A man whose death had been on the news.
A man whose fortune had started everything.
I looked at Ethan.
“Who is this?””
His voice was quiet.
“Your real father.””
I opened the letter.
The first line made my hands shake.
*Emily, if you are reading this, Robert Carter failed to keep you hidden.*
I stopped breathing.
The second line was worse.
*You have spent your entire life believing Evelyn was your mother. She was. But she was not the only person who protected you.*
I looked up.
“Ethan…”
He didn't answer.
I kept reading.
*The man you call Robert is not your father. He is the man who took you from me.*
My vision blurred.
Then I saw the signature.
And everything inside me went still.
Because the name written beneath the letter was not a stranger.
It was a name I had heard my entire life.
A name connected to the Carter fortune.
A name connected to my family.
A name that made me finally understand why Robert had been so afraid.
*Alexander Carter.*
I looked up at Ethan.
“Alexander Carter died before I was born.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then how could he write this?””
Ethan looked toward the dark house.
“Because he didn’t die before you were born.””
A pause.
“He died because of you.””
Behind us, a branch snapped.
We both turned.
Someone was standing near the trees.
Watching.
Ethan’s face changed.
“Emily.””
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“Run.””
But before I could move, a familiar voice came from the darkness.
“Don’t.””
My father stepped into the moonlight.
Robert.
His face was full of pain.
May you like
And fear.
“You’ve heard enough.””
