Chapter 7: The Account in My Name
“From my father.””
Daniel’s words hung over the dining table.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Richard Bennett stared at his son as though he had become a stranger. Margaret stood beside her chair, one hand resting against the table for support. And I remained frozen, my phone still displaying Vanessa’s message.
An account in my name.
Money I had never authorized.
Documents I had never seen.
My husband had just admitted that he’d involved me in something serious enough to frighten him.
I looked directly at him.
“Start talking.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Emily, I was trying to protect myself.””
“By opening an account in my name?””
“I wasn't trying to hurt you.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
He dragged a hand through his hair.
“When I first started working with Vanessa, she explained that the investment needed to be structured a certain way. My father had restrictions on the money I could access through Bennett Holdings. If I used a separate account, I could keep the project moving while we worked out the details.””
Richard rose slowly.
“You told me you were requesting money for a design venture. I denied the additional funding because you had not provided a credible business plan. You then moved company money through an outside consulting firm.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That isn't how it happened.””
“Then explain how it happened.””
“I thought the project would succeed. I thought I could return the money before anyone noticed.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“And when you realized you couldn't?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“I panicked.””
I stared at my husband.
He had not opened an account in my name because he had forgotten to tell me about it.
He had done it because he wanted access to money and wanted to avoid his father's restrictions.
And now he was standing in front of me, explaining his decisions as though panic had made them inevitable.
“What exactly did you use my name for?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Just the account.””
“Did you forge my signature?””
He didn't answer.
My stomach dropped.
“Daniel, did you forge my signature?””
“I signed the paperwork.””
“You signed my name?””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He closed his eyes.
“I don't know.””
A strange calm settled over me.
I had spent the evening hoping there was a boundary he hadn't crossed, some line that would separate his affair from a more deliberate betrayal.
Now I understood that the line had already disappeared.
He hadn't merely lied about another woman.
He had used my identity without my permission.
Richard reached for his phone.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Dad, don't.””
Richard didn't look at him.
“This has gone beyond a family disagreement.””
“Please. Give me a chance to fix it.””
“You had months to fix it.””
“I can return the money.””
“With what?”” I asked.
Daniel turned toward me.
I continued before he could answer.
“The money you took from our savings is gone. The company funds are under investigation. You signed documents you claim you didn't read. And now you've admitted to opening an account in my name.””
I took a shaky breath.
“Tell me what money you planned to return it with.””
He looked helpless.
“I had a plan.””
“Then why can't you explain it?””
His silence was answer enough.
Richard walked toward the adjoining study.
“I am contacting the company's legal counsel. Nobody moves another dollar until the records are reviewed.””
Daniel followed him.
“Dad, you can't do this without hearing me out.””
“I have been hearing you out for months.””
The study door closed.
Margaret remained beside me.
I could barely feel my hands.
“Did you know?”” I whispered.
She looked at me.
“Know what?””
“That Daniel had used my name.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate, and for the first time that evening, I believed her.
She sat beside me and reached for my hand.
“Emily, I knew there were irregularities. I knew Richard was investigating payments connected to Vanessa's company. But I did not know Daniel had opened an account in your name.””
I looked at the screen again.
Vanessa had known.
She had known enough to contact me directly.
She had known enough to tell me something Daniel had concealed.
But why?
If she had been involved in the financial arrangements, why would she risk exposing herself?
I typed another message.
What account are you talking about?
Her response came quickly.
The account Daniel opened six weeks ago.
How do you know?
Because I helped him arrange the paperwork.
My fingers went numb.
I read the message twice.
Vanessa had helped him.
That meant she wasn't simply an uninvolved woman who had fallen for a married man. She knew about the account. She knew Daniel had used my name. And she had apparently participated in the process.
I typed:
Did you know he was signing my name without my permission?
The reply took longer.
I knew he was using your information. He told me you had agreed to help him.
I stared at the screen.
That was a lie.
I had never agreed to anything.
I had never even known there was an account.
You knew he was married to me, I wrote. You knew he was using our savings. Why should I believe you now?
Her answer arrived almost immediately.
You shouldn't believe me. You should ask to see the original documents.
I looked toward the study.
Richard's voice was low and tense behind the closed door.
Daniel's was barely audible.
I returned to the messages.
Why do you have the original?
Vanessa replied:
Because Daniel asked me to keep it safe.
Safe from whom?
This time, her answer took nearly a minute.
From his father.
I felt a chill move through me.
That was exactly what Daniel had said.
But Vanessa's next message changed the meaning.
Emily, there is something else. Your name isn't just on the bank account.
I stood abruptly.
Margaret looked up.
"What is it?""
I couldn't answer.
Another message appeared.
It's on the company authorization, too.
I gripped the phone.
What company authorization?
The reply arrived in pieces.
The document that allowed the transfers.
Daniel told me it was temporary.
But the version Richard has isn't the original.
I stared at those words.
Richard had shown us documents he believed established the path of the money.
Daniel had insisted they were incomplete.
And now Vanessa was claiming that the original paperwork contained my name.
I looked toward the study door.
For the first time, I wondered whether Richard's investigation had been based on documents that told only part of the story.
I returned to the table and opened the folder Richard had left behind.
I searched through the corporate filings, bank statements, and transaction summaries.
Most pages contained names, account numbers, and signatures I barely understood.
Then I found a page with a small box labeled Authorized Representative.
Daniel's name appeared first.
Below it was another name.
Mine.
The signature beside it looked almost exactly like the one I used on official documents.
Almost.
I brought the page closer to the light.
The final letter in my surname curved in the wrong direction.
I knew my signature.
I had signed it thousands of times.
Someone had copied it.
I heard the study door open.
Daniel emerged first, followed by Richard.
My husband stopped when he saw the document in my hands.
His expression told me he knew exactly what I'd found.
I held it up.
“Who signed this?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
Then he looked at me.
“I can explain.””
“No,” I said.
“You can answer.””
Richard took the page and examined it.
His face darkened.
“Daniel, you told me Emily had never been involved in these transactions.””
“She wasn't.””
“Then why is her signature on this authorization?””
Daniel's lips parted.
He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Desperation.
Not because he had hurt me.
Because the evidence was no longer something he could explain away with a few careful sentences.
Finally, he whispered, “Vanessa said it was necessary.””
I felt the room tilt.
“Necessary for what?””
He didn't answer.
Then Richard turned the page over.
There was a handwritten note on the back.
Three lines.
A date.
An account number.
And a sentence that made Richard's face go white.
*“Transfer authority granted pending completion of the Bennett family agreement.””*
Richard stared at his son.
“What family agreement?””
Daniel took a step backward.
And in that moment, I understood that my husband hadn't simply created a secret financial arrangement.
He had attached my name to an agreement involving his family.
An agreement Richard apparently knew nothing about.
Before anyone could speak, Vanessa sent one final message.
If you want the truth, meet me tomorrow morning. Come alone.
Then she added an address.
I recognized the building from Margaret's photograph.
The same downtown office where Daniel had handed Vanessa a set of keys six weeks earlier.
May you like
And beneath the address was a final sentence.
Bring the document with your signature. I'll show you what Daniel was really trying to protect.
