Chapter 1: The Woman Who Knew My Name

The woman holding my husband’s arm looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Hi, Emily. Nice to finally meet you.””

Finally.

That single word hurt more than seeing Daniel with another woman.

She knew who I was.

She knew I was his wife.

And she was smiling as though she’d been waiting for this moment.

Twenty minutes earlier, I’d been Christmas shopping at Water Tower Place in Chicago with my wealthy mother-in-law, Margaret Bennett.

I thought it would be an ordinary afternoon.

I thought my marriage was still worth saving.

That morning, Daniel had kissed me goodbye and told me he had an all-day design charrette he couldn’t miss.

I believed him.

Then Margaret suddenly stopped walking.

“Don’t react, Emily. Watch me.””

Across the crowded mall, Daniel was strolling beside a beautiful woman in an emerald green coat.

Her arm was wrapped around his.

Her fingers rested comfortably against his bicep.

And my husband was smiling at her with a tenderness I hadn’t felt from him in months.

Then I noticed his coat.

The one he was wearing for her.

The one I’d bought him for his thirtieth birthday after working extra hours and saving every spare dollar.

My shopping bags slipped from my hands.

I wanted to march over and demand an explanation.

I wanted to ask him how long he’d been lying to me.

But Margaret caught my forearm.

“Stand up straight.””

She gathered my bags, placed them back in my trembling hands, and walked toward her son with a calmness that frightened me more than anger would have.

Daniel turned.

“Mom? Emily?””

His smile vanished.

He immediately pulled away from the woman, but she tightened her grip instead of releasing him.

Margaret introduced herself first.

Then she looked directly at the stranger.

“And this is Emily Bennett. Daniel’s wife.””

The woman’s smile never faltered.

“Hi, Emily. Nice to finally meet you.””

Daniel looked ready to disappear into the crowd.

Margaret didn’t ask for an explanation.

She simply said, “Dinner. Seven o’clock. Our house. Your father wants to speak with you.””

Then she walked away with me.

And for the first time since my wedding day, I wondered whether my husband’s family knew something about him that I didn’t.

Because Margaret hadn’t looked surprised.

She’d looked prepared.
