Chapter 6: The Signature That Changed Everything

Daniel refused to explain the document until his father agreed to stop asking questions in front of me.

That request told me more than he intended.

He wasn't embarrassed by what he'd done.

He was afraid of what I might learn.

Richard, however, had no intention of allowing him to control the conversation.

"You signed the document," he said.

"You involved the company. You moved money without providing a complete accounting. You don't get to decide who is allowed to know the facts.""

Daniel gripped the back of his chair.

"I made a bad decision.""

"Several," Richard replied.

"Now we're trying to determine how far the consequences extend.""

Margaret looked at her son.

"Is Emily's name on it?""

Daniel's head snapped up.

"No.""

His answer came so quickly that I knew there was more.

"Then why are you afraid to tell me what it is?"" I asked.

He looked exhausted.

"Because it could affect our marriage.""

I stared at him.

"Our marriage has already been affected.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Vanessa told me the document was just a temporary authorization. She said it would help secure financing for the design studio. I didn't read every page because she assured me the details were standard.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"You signed a financial authorization without reading it?""

"I trusted her.""

"And now?""

Daniel said nothing.

I looked at the folder on the table.

"Can we see a copy?""

He shook his head.

"I don't have one.""

"Then how do you know what it says?""

"Vanessa explained it to me.""

I felt a bitter laugh rising in my throat.

He had accepted her explanations while hiding the arrangement from his own family. He'd moved our money without telling me. He'd signed documents he hadn't read.

And now he expected us to believe that everything had happened because someone else had misled him.

"Daniel," I said quietly, "did you give her permission to use your signature on anything else?""

He looked at me.

"No.""

"Are you certain?""

His silence lasted only a second, but I noticed it.

"Daniel.""

"I signed a few related forms.""

"What kind of forms?""

"Company registrations. Banking paperwork. Standard things.""

Richard sat down again.

"Did you authorize Vanessa to open accounts in your name?""

Daniel stared at him.

"I don't remember.""

For the first time that evening, Richard appeared genuinely shaken.

"You don't remember?""

"There were a lot of documents. I signed what she told me to sign.""

Richard took off his glasses and set them beside the folder.

"Then you need to contact an attorney and obtain copies of every document connected to this arrangement. You should not sign anything else until you understand precisely what you've agreed to.""

Daniel nodded faintly.

I barely heard them.

My thoughts had turned toward something much smaller, much more personal.

Our bank account.

The house we had planned to buy.

The future I had pictured whenever Daniel talked about his dream of starting a business.

I had believed we were making sacrifices together.

Instead, I'd been making sacrifices while he made secret arrangements with Vanessa.

"Did she know about our savings?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"What?""

"Did Vanessa know we were saving for a house?""

"Yes.""

"Did she know how much we had?""

He hesitated.

"She knew we were planning to buy a place.""

"Did she know about the transfers?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"She knew I was moving money.""

My throat tightened.

"How much did you tell her about me?""

"Emily—"

"Did you tell her I was working extra hours? Did you tell her I'd postponed buying things for myself because we were trying to save? Did you tell her I trusted you?""

His face crumpled.

"I didn't talk about you like that.""

"Then how did you talk about me?""

He didn't answer.

That was when I understood that I might never receive a complete account of what had happened between them.

Some truths were buried beneath shame.

Others were concealed because the person who knew them had something to lose.

I stood and walked toward the window.

Behind me, Richard resumed questioning Daniel about the transfers, the consulting company, and the document Vanessa supposedly held.

I tried to focus on the sound of their voices instead of the memories crowding my mind.

Our first apartment.

The cheap furniture we'd assembled together.

The night Daniel had promised me that whatever happened, we would always tell each other the truth.

I had taken that promise seriously.

He apparently hadn't.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

A message appeared.

Emily Bennett? This is Vanessa Reed.

My entire body went cold.

I read it again.

Then another message arrived.

I think you deserve to hear my side before Daniel tells you another version of events.

I looked toward the dining room.

Daniel was still talking to his father, his back turned to me.

I typed a reply.

What do you want?

Her response came almost immediately.

To explain why I was with your husband today.

I stared at the screen.

You know he's married.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Yes. I knew that from the beginning.

I felt physically sick.

Another message followed.

But there's something Daniel hasn't told you about the money.

I gripped the phone.

What?

This time, she didn't answer immediately.

I could hear Margaret asking Daniel whether he'd kept copies of the paperwork.

Then my phone vibrated again.

The money wasn't supposed to stay in my company.

I stared at those words until they blurred.

Another message appeared.

Daniel was supposed to move it somewhere else.

My pulse hammered.

Where?

The reply took nearly a minute.

When it arrived, it contained only one sentence.

Ask your husband why he opened an account in your name.

I stopped breathing.

For several seconds, the dining room seemed to tilt around me.

An account in my name?

I had never opened another account.

I had never authorized Daniel to open one for me.

And if Vanessa was telling the truth, the missing money wasn't simply money Daniel had taken from our shared savings.

It might have been connected to something I had never known existed.

I turned toward the table.

"Daniel.""

He looked up.

I held out my phone.

"What's this about an account in my name?""

His expression changed instantly.

Richard stopped speaking.

Margaret rose from her chair.

Daniel stared at the message, and the color drained from his face.

"Where did you get that?""

"Vanessa.""

He reached for my phone.

I pulled it away.

"Don't touch it. Just answer me.""

He glanced at his parents, then toward the hallway, as though searching for a way out.

"Emily, I can explain.""

I shook my head.

"You've said that all night.""

"This is different.""

"Then tell me what it is.""

He looked at Richard.

His father stood very still.

"Did you open an account in Emily's name?"" Richard asked.

Daniel's mouth opened, but no words came out.

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, he whispered, "I never intended for her to be involved.""

Margaret pressed a hand to her chest.

Richard's voice became dangerously quiet.

"That was not the question.""

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time since I'd discovered his affair, I saw something in his eyes that frightened me more than guilt.

He looked like a man who knew the truth could destroy everything he had left.

"Yes," he said.

My knees nearly buckled.

He had opened an account in my name.

Without telling me.

Without asking me.

I struggled to breathe.

"Why?""

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Vanessa said it was the only way to protect the investment.""

"Protect it from whom?""

He looked toward the documents scattered across the table.

Then he said the words that changed the entire meaning of the evening.

"From my father.""

Richard went completely still.

Margaret slowly turned toward her husband.

And I realized that whatever Daniel had done, whatever Vanessa had hidden, and whatever Richard had been investigating, the story I'd walked into at Water Tower Place was only the beginning.

Because my husband hadn't merely betrayed our marriage.

May you like

He had placed my name inside a financial arrangement that his own family might not even fully understand.

And somewhere outside that house, Vanessa Reed possessed the original document that could explain exactly why.
