Chapter 4: The Name Beside Hers
The document Richard placed in front of me was a copy of a corporate filing.
At first, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.
There were dates, account numbers, legal descriptions, and signatures arranged in neat columns. Vanessa Reed's name appeared halfway down the page, beside the name of a company I'd never heard of.
Then I saw Daniel's signature.
My husband had signed a document authorizing Vanessa to act as a financial representative for a company connected to Bennett Holdings, his father's business.
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Daniel leaned forward.
"It's a business matter.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Then explain the business matter.""
Daniel glanced at his father, then at Margaret, before finally looking at me.
"Vanessa works in consulting. She was helping with a project.""
"What project?""
"Emily, this isn't the right time.""
I stared at him.
"You brought me into this room. Your father put a document in front of me with your signature and another woman's name on it. If there's a right time to explain, I'd love to know when it is.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Richard turned another page.
"Three months ago, Daniel requested access to a portion of the company's investment accounts. He told me he wanted to evaluate an independent design venture.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I explained that already.""
"You explained that you wanted to start a business," Richard replied.
"You did not explain why you subsequently transferred company funds to a consulting firm registered to Vanessa Reed.""
My stomach tightened.
"How much money?""
Richard looked at me before answering.
"Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"That money wasn't stolen. It was allocated to a project. The company was supposed to receive a return.""
"Then why didn't you tell your wife?"" Margaret asked.
"Because she has nothing to do with the company.""
I stared at him.
Nothing to do with it.
I had worked extra hours to buy him a birthday present. I had postponed replacing my own laptop because we were trying to save for a house. I had listened to him complain about financial pressure and offered to contribute more to our shared expenses.
All that time, he'd been moving money into a company associated with the woman he was secretly seeing.
"Did you use our savings?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at me sharply.
"What?""
"Our savings account. The money we were putting aside for a house. Did you take anything from it?""
"No.""
He answered too quickly.
I knew our balance. I'd checked it the previous week. It had been lower than I expected, but Daniel had told me our automatic payments had increased.
I'd believed him because I had no reason not to.
I reached for my phone.
"Emily," he said.
I opened our banking app.
The balance appeared on the screen.
For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of the number.
Then I checked the transaction history.
A transfer had been made six weeks earlier.
Another followed three weeks later.
Both had gone to an account I didn't recognize.
The combined amount was enough to erase most of the money we'd saved for our future home.
I turned the phone toward him.
"What are these?""
Daniel's face changed.
"Let me explain.""
"You said you didn't touch our savings.""
"I was going to replace it.""
"With what?""
He said nothing.
Margaret closed her eyes briefly, as though she'd been expecting this answer.
Richard gathered the corporate documents into a neat stack.
"That's what we need to establish tonight.""
I looked at my husband, waiting for him to deny it, to tell me the bank had made a mistake, to offer anything that might make the man sitting across from me recognizable again.
Instead, Daniel leaned toward me.
"Please don't turn this into something it isn't.""
I pulled my chair away from him.
"You've been lying to me about another woman, you've taken money from our savings, and your parents are showing me documents about a company connected to her. What exactly do you think I'm turning this into?""
His jaw tightened.
"Vanessa was supposed to help me get a project off the ground. The relationship happened later.""
"Later than what?""
"Later than the business arrangement.""
I heard Margaret inhale sharply.
I wanted to believe there was still some distinction between the man who had betrayed me emotionally and the man who had taken our money.
But the distinction was becoming harder to find.
Richard opened a second folder.
"This is the part you haven't explained, Daniel.""
My husband stared at it.
"What is that?""
"Records showing that Vanessa's company received payments from an account that was never authorized to fund her work.""
Richard placed a printed statement beside the first document.
"There are three transfers. The dates correspond with the period you've claimed you were developing your project.""
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
"Those records are incomplete.""
"Then complete them.""
"I can't do that here.""
Richard's voice remained quiet.
"Why not?""
Daniel looked at his mother.
For the first time that evening, I saw genuine fear in his expression.
"Because you don't understand what you're getting involved in.""
Margaret straightened.
"Then help us understand.""
Daniel looked at me, and something in his face softened.
"Emily, I never wanted you involved in this.""
That sentence nearly broke me.
He spoke as though keeping me ignorant had been a kindness.
As though he hadn't made a choice every time he lied.
As though my trust had been an inconvenience he needed to manage.
I stood.
"I need some air.""
Margaret rose with me, but I shook my head.
"No. Please. I need a minute by myself.""
I walked into the adjoining sitting room and stopped beside the window.
Outside, Chicago glittered beneath the dark October sky. Christmas lights had already begun appearing along the streets, and somewhere beyond the glass, people were shopping for gifts, making dinner plans, and trusting the people they loved.
I thought about Daniel kissing me goodbye that morning.
I thought about the emerald green coat.
I thought about Vanessa's smile.
Nice to finally meet you.
She hadn't looked surprised to see me.
She'd looked prepared.
A few minutes later, Margaret joined me.
"Emily.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"Did you know about the money?""
She hesitated.
"I knew there were irregularities in the company accounts. Richard was investigating them before we saw Daniel and Vanessa together.""
"But you knew something was wrong.""
"Yes.""
"And you didn't tell me.""
"No," she admitted.
"I didn't.""
I turned away.
"How am I supposed to know who's protecting me and who's just keeping me in the dark?""
Margaret didn't defend herself.
Instead, she said, "You have every right to be angry with me.""
That honesty caught me off guard.
Then she reached into her pocket and removed a small envelope.
"I want you to see something before you decide what to do next.""
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel stood outside a downtown office building beside Vanessa. They weren't touching, but their expressions were serious. Vanessa held a folder under one arm, and Daniel appeared to be handing her a set of keys.
On the back, someone had written a date.
Six weeks before I'd seen them at Water Tower Place.
I looked at Margaret.
"Who took this?""
"Someone who was helping Richard verify the transfers.""
I studied the photograph again.
"What's in that building?""
Margaret's expression tightened.
"That's what we haven't been able to establish.""
Before I could ask another question, voices rose in the dining room.
Richard sounded furious.
Daniel sounded desperate.
Then I heard a sentence that made my blood run cold.
"Vanessa told me you already knew about the account!""
Margaret went completely still.
I looked at her.
"What account?""
May you like
She didn't answer.
And suddenly, I realized that even after everything I'd learned, there was still something important everyone in that house was afraid to tell me.
