Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the Family
The man standing in my kitchen looked like a ghost from a life I thought I understood.
Robert Mercer.
My father’s younger brother.
My uncle.
The man who gave the speech at my father’s funeral.
The man who placed a hand on my shoulder and told me, “Your father would want you to be strong.””
I remembered those words.
I remembered believing him.
Now they felt like poison.
“You died.””
Robert smiled faintly.
“People die when they need to disappear.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was broken only by the sound of rain hitting the windows.
Daniel moved slightly in front of me.
A protective instinct.
Robert noticed.
“Still playing the hero, Daniel?””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Leave.””
Robert laughed softly.
“After all these years, that’s still your answer.””
“You don’t belong here.””
Robert looked around the room.
“This house was built with my brother’s money.””
His eyes landed on me.
“And eventually, it will belong to me.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
He tilted his head.
“Why what?””
“Why destroy my family?””
For the first time, his smile disappeared.
“You still think this was about destroying your family.””
I stared at him.
“What else would it be?””
Robert walked toward the table.
He picked up the old letter.
“You have no idea what your father found.””
I stepped forward.
“Put that down.””
He looked at the paper.
“You know, your father had one weakness.””
“What?””
“He believed people could change.””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“She believed the same thing.””
Vanessa stiffened.
I looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
Robert smiled.
“Ask her.””
“Don’t.””
Vanessa’s voice was quiet.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Robert turned toward her.
“You spent eighteen months pretending to love him.””
“Stop.””
“You were supposed to collect information.””
“I said stop.””
“But then you made the mistake everyone makes.””
He looked at me.
“You actually started caring.””
My chest tightened.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
She couldn’t look at me.
That was answer enough.
Robert continued.
“She was useful.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“You don’t get to talk about me like that.””
Robert laughed.
“You were a tool.””
Something changed in Vanessa’s expression.
Not fear.
Anger.
“I’m not that person anymore.””
“No?””
He looked amused.
“Then why did you tie Maria up?””
The words hit hard.
Vanessa looked down.
I saw the shame on her face.
Robert noticed.
“Exactly.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Robert looked at him.
“You always did hate hearing the truth.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“The truth is that you murdered your own brother.””
The room froze.
Robert didn’t react.
Not even slightly.
And that scared me more than anger would have.
“You should be careful with accusations.””
Daniel laughed.
“I spent twelve years proving it.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
He looked at me.
“I suspected.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You knew my uncle was alive.””
Daniel hesitated.
“I knew someone was using his identity.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He looked away.
The betrayal kept stacking.
Every person around me had hidden something.
My father.
My mother.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
Now Robert.
I felt like my entire life was a room full of locked doors.
And every person had a key except me.
Robert watched my reaction.
“Do you understand now?””
I looked at him.
“Understand what?””
“That everyone around you has been lying.””
He smiled.
“Except me.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re the last person I would believe.””
His smile faded.
“Because you think I’m the villain.””
“Aren’t you?””
Robert walked closer.
“No.””
He placed the letter on the table.
“I’m the person who accepted reality.””
“What reality?””
“That your father was weak.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Don’t.””
Robert ignored him.
“He had everything. Money. Power. Respect.””
He looked at me.
“But he couldn’t make the hard decisions.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t talk about him like that.””
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know him.””
Robert smiled.
“I knew him better than anyone.””
“You betrayed him.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I saved the company from him.””
The words were so absurd I almost didn’t understand them.
“You saved it?””
“Yes.””
“By framing him?””
Robert’s expression shifted slightly.
A tiny crack.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Nobody moved.
Robert looked at the faces around him.
Then sighed.
“Fine.””
He pulled out a chair and sat down.
Like he had all the time in the world.
“Your father built Mercer Aerospace with dreams.””
He tapped the table.
“But dreams don’t run companies.””
“Greed does?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Fear.””
The room went quiet.
“Your father refused to make necessary decisions because he wanted everyone to like him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Robert ignored him.
“He protected employees who should have been fired. He trusted partners who should have been investigated. He gave second chances until there was nothing left to save.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t explain what you did.””
“No.””
He leaned back.
“Because you still don’t understand the game.””
“What game?””
“The one your father lost.””
I stepped closer.
“I’m done with riddles.””
Robert smiled.
“Good.””
He looked at me.
“Because your father left you something.””
My eyes moved to the letter.
“The letter?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“A recording.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
Robert looked at him.
“You didn’t know?””
That was the first time I saw Daniel genuinely surprised.
“What recording?””
Robert smiled.
“Your brother kept proof.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Proof of what?””
Robert looked at me.
“Proof that someone in this room was responsible for his death.””
Everyone froze.
My eyes moved slowly.
To Vanessa.
To Daniel.
To Claire.
Then back to Robert.
“Who?””
Robert stood.
“That’s the question you’ve been asking all night.””
He walked toward me.
“And the answer is closer than you think.””
A phone rang.
Not mine.
Not Daniel’s.
Robert reached into his coat.
And pulled out a phone.
He answered.
“Yes.””
Everyone watched him.
A few seconds passed.
Then his expression changed.
Not fear.
Surprise.
“No.””
He listened again.
Then looked directly at me.
“I see.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?”” Daniel asked.
Robert didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
“You failed.””
Vanessa went pale.
“What?””
“The account was discovered.””
Her face changed.
“You said nobody could trace it.””
“I said nobody should.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What account?””
Robert ignored him.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Do you know what happens to people who fail twice?””
Vanessa backed away.
“Robert…”
The fear in her voice was different.
She wasn’t afraid of being exposed.
She was afraid of him.
I noticed.
And suddenly, everything changed.
Because Robert wasn’t just connected to Vanessa.
He controlled her.
“You threatened her,” I said.
Robert looked at me.
“Of course.””
“Why?””
“Because she was useful.””
My hands tightened.
“You ruined her life.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“She ruined her own life when she started believing she had choices.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Elijah…”
I looked at her.
For the first time, I didn’t see the woman who betrayed me.
I saw someone trapped.
Someone who had done terrible things.
But someone who was also afraid.
Robert turned toward the door.
“I didn’t come here to explain everything.””
“Then why are you here?””
He stopped.
Then smiled.
“To collect what your father hid.””
I stepped forward.
“What?””
He looked at the letter.
“The evidence.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What evidence?””
Robert’s eyes narrowed.
“The evidence proving who killed him.””
The lights flickered.
Again.
Then went out.
A second later, the entire house filled with darkness.
I heard movement.
A struggle.
Someone gasped.
A heavy object fell.
Then silence.
When the lights came back on…
Robert was gone.
But the letter in my hand was missing.
And on the table where it had been sitting was a new piece of paper.
A single sentence.
Written in my father’s handwriting.
*Elijah, if Robert finds this, it means the person I trusted most has already betrayed me.*
I stared at the words.
Then slowly looked up.
Because there was only one person in the room my father had trusted enough to leave his secrets with.
May you like
Daniel.
And Daniel was no longer standing beside me.
