Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

The woman standing inside my home looked exactly like someone I had buried in my memory years ago.

Same dark hair.

Same sharp eyes.

Same small scar near her eyebrow.

A scar I remembered from when I was a child and she fell while teaching me how to ride a bicycle.

My aunt Claire.

Except Daniel had just told me she wasn’t Claire.

And that the woman in front of me was the reason my family had been destroyed.

My mind rejected it.

It had to.

Because some truths were too impossible to accept.

“You’re lying.””

The woman smiled sadly.

“I expected that.””

“Who are you?””

She looked at the letter in my hand.

Then at me.

“My name is Claire Mercer.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.””

Her eyes moved toward him.

“Still protecting him after all these years, Daniel?””

His face hardened.

“You don’t get to walk in here and pretend nothing happened.””

A strange sadness crossed her face.

“I’m not pretending.””

“Then tell him.””

She looked back at me.

And for the first time, I saw something familiar.

Not manipulation.

Not fear.

Grief.

“I am your mother’s sister.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“My aunt died.””

She nodded slowly.

“That’s what everyone was told.””

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“Everyone?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

Daniel said nothing.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

His eyes lowered.

“I knew there were questions.””

“Questions?””

My voice rose.

“You knew my aunt was alive?””

“No.””

“Then what did you know?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“I knew someone was using her identity.””

Claire gave a small laugh.

“Using?””

Her expression turned bitter.

“Interesting choice of words.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both of them looked at me.

“I’m tired of everyone talking around me like I’m a child.””

Nobody spoke.

“I want the truth.””

Claire nodded.

“You deserve it.””

She walked slowly into the room.

Her eyes moved around the house.

“This place hasn’t changed.””

I felt anger rise.

“You’ve been here before?””

She looked at me.

“Many times.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“Before you knew me.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Elijah, don’t listen to everything she says.””

Claire looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because she’s been lying for twelve years.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Have I?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

I looked between them.

“What happened twelve years ago?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire said:

“Your father discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That the person destroying Mercer Aerospace was someone close to him.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Vanessa.

Then Claire.

“Who?””

Claire’s eyes moved to the letter.

“Your father never found the final answer.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because I was there.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

“The night he died.””

My heart stopped.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“What?””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Claire ignored him.

“I was there when your father made his final phone call.””

My mouth went dry.

“My father called me that night.””

“No.””

The word came quietly.

“He called someone else first.””

I remembered the voicemail.

The sadness in his voice.

The words I never understood.

When you’re ready to listen, call me.

“What did he say?””

Claire looked at me.

“He said he finally knew who betrayed him.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Who?””

She looked away.

“I never found out.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“You heard him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why don’t you know?””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“Because he was interrupted.””

The silence was heavy.

“By who?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The question itself was the answer.

Someone had been there.

Someone close enough to stop him.

Someone who knew he was about to reveal everything.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Because I didn’t know how.””

“That’s becoming everyone’s favorite excuse.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“While I lived my life believing my father died broken?””

Daniel looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology did nothing.

Because apologies couldn’t bring back years.

They couldn’t fix the memories I had built around a lie.

Claire stepped closer.

“Your father loved you.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t talk like you knew him.””

“I did know him.””

“You disappeared.””

Her face tightened.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because your father asked me to.””

That shocked me.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew someone was watching us.””

The room went quiet again.

I thought about the cameras.

The hidden accounts.

The secret documents.

The people moving around my life without my knowledge.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Everyone noticed.

Including Vanessa.

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.

Claire’s expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“What are you saying?””

Claire looked at me.

“I’m saying Vanessa wasn’t the first person sent to investigate your family.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“What does that mean?””

Claire answered.

“It means someone has been watching the Mercer family for decades.””

I felt a chill.

“Why?””

“Because your father found something.””

“What?””

Claire looked at the letter.

“Something powerful enough that people were willing to destroy lives to keep hidden.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Claire looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re doing.””

A strange expression crossed her face.

“Neither did you.””

Daniel went silent.

I noticed.

“What does that mean?””

Neither answered.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Claire interrupted.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“It’s time.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your father didn’t trust me.””

That hurt more than I expected.

Because Daniel was the one person I thought my father respected.

“He suspected you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was investigating him.””

I stared.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“I was trying to prove whether your father was involved.””

“Involved in what?””

“The fraud.””

The words landed like a punch.

“You thought my father was guilty?””

“At first.””

I couldn’t speak.

Daniel continued.

“Then I found the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That your father wasn’t stealing from Mercer Aerospace.””

He looked at Claire.

“He was trying to expose the person who was.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Claire.

Then Daniel.

Everyone had a piece of the story.

Everyone except me.

“What happened after you found out?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“I told your father.””

“And?””

“He told me to stop investigating.””

“Why?””

“Because he already knew.””

“Known what?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“He knew who the person was.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

The sound of glass breaking came from the kitchen.

Everyone froze.

Claire immediately turned toward the sound.

“He’s here.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Her face lost all color.

“The person who has been cleaning up every loose end.””

Daniel reached for his phone.

Vanessa stepped closer to me.

And then I saw it.

A shadow moving behind the kitchen doorway.

Someone had entered the house.

Someone without setting off the alarm.

Someone who knew the security system.

Someone who knew this home.

The figure stepped forward.

And I recognized him.

My blood went cold.

Because the man standing there wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been at my father’s funeral.

Someone who had comforted me when I was a broken twenty-nine-year-old son.

Someone who had told me:

“Your father would be proud.””

I stared at him.

Unable to breathe.

“Uncle Robert?””

He smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like a man who had finally stopped pretending.

“Hello, Elijah.””

He looked around the room.

Then at the letter in my hand.

“Your father really was stubborn until the end.””

My voice was barely there.

“You’re dead.””

Robert Mercer smiled.

“So is the version of your family you believed in.””

May you like

He stepped closer.

“And tonight, you’re finally going to learn why.””
