Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave

I stared at the signature until the ink blurred.

My mother.

Evelyn Mercer.

A woman who had been gone for twelve years.

A woman I remembered as gentle, warm, and incapable of hurting anyone.

The woman who baked birthday cakes at midnight because she forgot to order one.

The woman who cried during movies and apologized to plants when she forgot to water them.

My mother.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

Her name was sitting on a document connected to my father’s downfall.

“No.””

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Elijah…”

“No.””

I pushed the paper away.

“This isn’t possible.””

Vanessa looked at me with sympathy.

That almost made it worse.

I didn’t want her sympathy.

Not from her.

Not after everything.

“My mother didn’t betray my father.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

He simply said:

“I hoped you would say that.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you still see people the way your father wanted you to see them.””

“And what way is that?””

“As people who are either good or bad.””

He glanced at the document.

“Your father learned the truth was more complicated.””

I picked up the paper again.

The contract was old.

The edges were worn.

There were several signatures.

Company names.

Financial details.

But one section stood out.

A transfer authorization.

Money moved from a private account into Mercer Aerospace.

Then redirected somewhere else.

I looked at Daniel.

“What am I looking at?””

“A trap.””

“For who?””

“For your father.””

My eyes moved back to the document.

“Explain.””

Daniel walked toward the table.

“The financial fraud investigation that nearly destroyed your father wasn’t random. Someone built it.””

“Someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he pointed to my mother’s signature.

“Your mother found out.””

I frowned.

“Found out what?””

“That the money trail was fake.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was silent.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother discovered someone inside the company was moving funds through fake accounts. She tried to warn your father.””

“Then why does her signature appear here?””

“Because she signed something.””

“What?””

“A document promising she wouldn’t reveal what she knew.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would she sign that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because they threatened you.””

The room went silent.

I stopped breathing for a second.

“Me?””

“You were twenty-eight.””

I remembered.

I had just started working at Mercer Aerospace.

I was stubborn.

Ambitious.

Convinced I could solve every problem myself.

“What did they threaten?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“They told her if she exposed them, you would be blamed too.””

I looked down.

My hands tightened.

“My mother protected me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because your father asked her to.””

That made me look up.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father knew the danger was bigger than the company. He knew whoever was behind it had influence.””

I stared at him.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because he wanted you to have a normal life.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Normal?””

I gestured around the room.

“My father died believing he failed. I spent years thinking I wasn’t there when he needed me.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“He knew you loved him.””

“That doesn’t change what happened.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“But maybe the truth does.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She hadn’t moved.

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?””

Her eyes lowered.

“Because I didn’t know how.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

“Did you know about my mother?””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“How long?””

“Since before we met.””

I closed my eyes.

The betrayal felt endless.

Every answer created another question.

Every truth came with another lie attached.

“Then why did you come into my life?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because I wanted to find out if your father was guilty.””

The words were quiet.

“But then I met you.””

I looked at her.

“And?””

“And I realized I didn’t know him.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“I expected someone cold. Someone arrogant. Someone who protected his family’s wealth at any cost.””

Her voice cracked.

“But you weren’t like that.””

I looked away.

“Don’t.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“You’ve been doing that occasionally.””

The pain on her face was real.

I hated that part of me noticed.

“I fell in love with you.””

The room became silent.

Even Daniel looked away.

Because some truths were uncomfortable no matter who said them.

“I didn’t plan that.””

I stared at the floor.

“But you still lied.””

“Yes.””

“You still investigated me.””

“Yes.””

“You still tied Maria up.””

Her face changed.

“I know.””

That was the first time she didn’t defend herself.

No excuse.

No justification.

Just guilt.

And somehow that made it harder.

I turned to Daniel.

“And you?””

He looked at me.

“What about me?””

“You knew Vanessa was investigating me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was lying.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You were all making choices for me.””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew I was right.

My father.

My mother.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

Everyone had hidden pieces of my own life from me.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A notification.

A security alert.

I looked at the screen.

My home security system.

Motion detected.

The camera feed opened automatically.

The image was from outside.

A black SUV was parked at the end of the driveway.

Someone was standing beside it.

Watching the house.

“Who is that?””

Daniel immediately moved closer.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“The security feed.””

He looked at the screen.

Then went completely still.

“You need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Now.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Who is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because Daniel always had answers.

“What’s happening?””

He looked at me.

“Elijah, listen to me carefully.””

His voice was different.

Urgent.

“Do not go near that person.””

I stared at the screen.

The figure outside turned slightly.

The camera caught part of their face.

I froze.

Because I knew that face.

Not from business.

Not from my company.

From my childhood.

The person standing outside my house was someone I had not seen in twelve years.

Someone everyone told me was gone.

Someone who had attended my father’s funeral.

Someone who had hugged me and cried with me.

My mother’s younger sister.

My aunt.

Claire.

But that was impossible.

Because Claire Mercer died three years before my father.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is she doing here?””

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

“She isn’t Claire.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

He looked at the screen.

“That’s the woman who used Claire’s identity.””

I felt the room disappear around me.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I’m saying the person outside your house…”

The front door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Someone was trying to enter.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“…is the person your father spent his final years trying to expose.””

The lock clicked.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Elijah.””

The door slowly opened.

And a woman stepped inside.

A woman who looked exactly like my dead aunt.

She looked at me.

Smiled.

And said:

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

Her eyes moved to the letter in my hand.

“But your father made sure you would eventually find the truth.””

I couldn’t move.

She walked closer.

“Hello, Elijah.””

Her smile faded.

“I’m your mother’s sister.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“And I’m the reason your family was destroyed.””
