Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Engagement

The gun was the only thing I could see.

Not because Daniel was pointing it directly at me.

Because it represented something I had spent years refusing to believe.

That trust could be misplaced.

The man standing in my living room wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t an enemy who had broken through my security.

He was Daniel Cross.

My father’s chosen successor.

My best friend.

The man who knew every weakness in my company because I had given him permission to know them.

“Put the gun down, Daniel.””

My voice was calm.

At least it sounded calm.

Inside, my thoughts were moving faster than ever.

Daniel looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not excited.

Exhausted.

“I knew you would say that.””

“Then you know what happens next.””

His eyes moved toward the weapon in his hand.

Then back to me.

“I’m not here to hurt you.””

“People who aren’t here to hurt someone usually don’t bring guns into their house.””

A flicker of pain crossed his face.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa stood behind me.

I could feel her trembling.

Daniel noticed.

His expression changed.

Not hatred.

Disappointment.

“You really did it.””

Vanessa whispered, “Daniel…”

“You actually went through with it.””

“What are you talking about?””

He looked at me.

“She didn’t tell you?””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Tell me what?””

Daniel let out a slow breath.

“That’s what she does best.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

His voice became sharper.

“Don’t tell him the truth?””

The room fell silent.

I looked between them.

“You two know each other better than you admitted.””

Neither answered.

That was an answer.

“How long?””

Daniel looked away.

“How long what?””

“How long have you known Vanessa?””

His eyes returned to me.

“Eight years.””

My stomach tightened.

Eight years.

I had met Vanessa eighteen months ago.

Which meant…

“She knew about me before we met.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Her eyes filled.

“Elijah…”

“Is it true?””

She nodded.

Once.

Slowly.

The woman I planned to marry looked like she wanted to disappear.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“Before our first date?””

“Yes.””

“Before you told me you had never heard of Mercer Aerospace?””

Silence.

My chest tightened.

A memory surfaced.

Our first dinner.

A small restaurant downtown.

Vanessa laughing when I mentioned my company.

“I’m terrible with business stuff,” she had said.

“Honestly, I don’t even know what your company does.””

At the time, I found it refreshing.

Now it felt like a performance.

“Why?””

Her lips parted.

“Why did you pretend?””

She looked down.

“Because I was trying to get close to you.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why?””

Before she could answer, Daniel spoke.

“Because she was hired.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Daniel, stop.””

My entire body went still.

“Hired by who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s the question I’ve spent months trying to answer.””

I stepped closer.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel lowered the gun slightly.

“I found records after your father died.””

“What records?””

“Payments.””

“From who?””

“From an account connected to a private security company.””

I frowned.

“Security company?””

“Yes.””

“What does that have to do with Vanessa?””

Daniel looked at her.

“She worked for them.””

The words felt unreal.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not fair.””

I turned to her.

“Is it true?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Yes.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“How?””

“I was younger.””

“How?””

“I worked for a company that did private investigations.””

“That isn’t an answer.””

She swallowed.

“They recruited me because I was good at reading people.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“And you were assigned to me.””

“Yes.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my mind couldn’t process the amount of deception.

“So what was the plan?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not true.””

She wiped her eyes.

“The plan was to learn about you.””

“Why?””

“Because of your father.””

I stared at her.

“What does my father have to do with you?””

Daniel answered.

“Everything.””

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

He placed the folder on the table.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then he opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Old company records.

My father.

My company.

Vanessa.

All connected.

Daniel pointed to one photograph.

“This was taken fifteen years ago.””

I picked it up.

It showed my father leaving a building.

Standing beside him was a woman.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

“Who is she?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She’s Vanessa’s mother.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“My mother worked with your father.””

“Doing what?””

Vanessa answered quietly.

“Accounting.””

I looked back at the photo.

“Why didn’t I know this?””

“Because she left before you were involved in the company.””

Daniel tapped another document.

“She was one of the people blamed for the financial fraud investigation.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Your father accused her of stealing money.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“He ruined her life.””

I looked at her.

“And you came after me because of that?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

“I came after the truth.””

I studied her.

“You expected me to believe that?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you entered my life under false pretenses.””

She looked like she wanted to argue.

But couldn’t.

Because it was true.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your father wasn’t innocent either.””

That caught me off guard.

“What?””

“I found records showing he knew Vanessa’s mother was being framed.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel opened another file.

“He knew someone inside the company was manipulating the records.””

“Then why didn’t he say anything?””

“Because he was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Afraid of what?””

Daniel looked at the document.

“Of the same person who is still doing it today.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“No.””

I turned.

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“The person who originally ordered Vanessa to investigate you.””

I felt my heartbeat slow.

Because I suddenly understood something.

Vanessa wasn’t the beginning of the story.

She was a piece of it.

A person being controlled.

A person hiding something.

But not the person who started everything.

“Who ordered you?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t speak.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I can’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You have to.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You don’t understand what they’ll do.””

I looked at her.

“They?””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“The person who hired me isn’t after your company.””

I waited.

“They’re after something your father left behind.””

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“The letter?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

Toward the room where Maria had disappeared.

And when she spoke, her voice was barely audible.

“Your father left evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of who really betrayed him.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“The person standing in this room.””

My eyes moved slowly.

To Daniel.

Daniel froze.

The silence became unbearable.

“You’re accusing him?””

Vanessa nodded.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Pain.

“Elijah…”

I raised a hand.

“Don’t.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Is it true?””

He stared at me.

For several seconds.

Then he said:

“I came here because I knew this moment would happen.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“It means she’s finally telling you the part of the truth that benefits her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel opened the folder.

And pulled out one final document.

“I didn’t want you to see this.””

He placed it on the table.

“But you need to.””

I looked down.

A signature.

A date.

A contract.

And my blood went cold.

Because it wasn’t proof that Daniel betrayed my father.

It was proof that Daniel had been trying to stop someone else.

The signature at the bottom belonged to the one person I never considered a suspect.

My mother.

But my mother had been dead for twelve years.

May you like

And beneath her signature were three words written in my father’s handwriting:

*She knows everything.*
